And the last time I was there the gal that waited on me was kinda rude/distracted when she waited on me. No thank you or acknowledgement of any kind. I did like that social distancing and masks are enforced in the store, which is not the norm in Homer. I've gotten a lot of cool gifts, nautical themed stuffed animals and knickknacks, and clothing here over the years. I finally scored a really nice fleece lined Salty Dawg zip up that I am practically living in these days- its luscious!

Prices aren't bad for a tourist shop in Homer, the owner is really helpful, and the selection of products is fantastic. There were too many cute/shiny/funny/interesting products to decide what I wanted and I had to go back a couple times... If you're a shopper or not, Salty Girls is just a great stop. *And if you're looking for Salty Dawg attire, Salty Girls has a much bigger selection than Salty Dawg Saloon next door*

#1 Shopping in Homer AK 2025…read more If you want to get some cool stuff Homer, this should be your first stop. The Salmon Sisters are kind of legendary in Alaska and have encouraged a new generation of women in commercial fishing. I bought their second cookbook. The previous customer paid with a credit card and asked for a receipt. The female owner said, you want a handwritten one? Acting like it was a pain for her. The patron said I guess not that's ok (not appearing to be difficult). I went back into the store and asked, what is the tax rate for Seldovia? She said 9.5 %. I told her I was overcharged 4 dollars on a 30.00 dollar purchase. She played dumb and said, I only charge what my register says. I also told her she is practicing very poor business practices not giving receipts to patrons. I doubt she is paying/claiming her tax revenues correctly to the state of Alaska. Don't shop here. The receipt I asked for didn't even have a date or time on it (included in the photo).

And there on the boardwalk in front of me is the Alpaca Connection, with a plethora of sweaters, capes, jackets, blankets and -- HATS! Even at $25, I had to have one. The hat I settled on actually was on sale for $18 and wasn't made in Peru of Alpaca wool, but rather came from Ecuador, which is still okay. It will keep me warm. After leaving the store, I strolled into a souvenir shop a few doors away and found an acrylic knitted cap bearing the logo "HOMER, AK" for less than half the price. In Alaska, this is especially true because we are isolated and it's so important to our local economy. Furthermore, Alaska, and Homer in particular is teeming with artists. I suppose our amazingly beautiful but short summers and long, dark winters give our local artists lots of time to reflect on Alaskan beauty. I've never seen so many talented artists in one place. As such, I realize the longer I live here, to more desensitized I have become to good art. So when a particular artist catches my eye, it follows that they must be REALLY good. High Tide Arts is the home of Jens and Leslie Klaar. Jens is a talented knife maker and Leslie creates wonderful mosaics and watercolors. Leslie's work is characteristically Alaskan-themed. Her watercolors and mosaics are very different. I love the bold use of colors in her mosaics that hint at Japanese origami. Her paintings are in an entirely different style and equally fabulous. She has prints and originals for sale as well as art cards. High Tide's gallery sells art and jewelery made by many other talented Alaskan artists as well.
