We were passing through Düsseldorf for half a day and saw they're known for their Japanese food, so we decided to check out Takumi! They have both indoor and outdoor seating available. AJITAMA TONKOTSU RAMEN: I'm a tonkotsu person and almost always order this over other types of ramen. Not sure if I was just so severely deprived of Asian food, but I felt Takumi's tonkotsu ramen ranked pretty high on my list! And coming from SoCal as well as having lived down the street from both major Japanese food hubs in Los Angeles, that's saying a lot! Good amount of pork, the noodles were cooked to the perfect texture, and the broth was rich without being overly salty. I don't usually enjoy other types of ramen so I can't speak for those items from their menu. But I slurped my entire bowl of tonkotsu ramen dry! KARAAGE: Large pieces with crispy exterior and super juicy interiors! I wasn't expecting much but in the end I was super happy we ordered this. Overall, amazing tonkotsu ramen located in Düsseldorf's Little Tokyo.

Very little…read more It's my second time at this location (The Outlet in Roermond, The Netherlands) and it wasn't any better than the first. Walked in just before their lunch rush and ordered the Shirodashi ramen. Place was clean, trendy deco and the music was hip. First, my ramen did not resemble the photo on the menu/website. Mine looked haphazardly constructed. The pork belly looked like it was tossed in instead of displayed. Dish temperature could have been a bit hotter as well. Secondly, the broth could have been richer and deeper in taste. Perhaps its saltiness compensated for the blandness of the stock/broth. They should lose that uncomfortable wooden ladle contraption and replace it with a proper Chinese/Japanese soup spoon. I want to like it but it's not happening.

The service was really friendly and attentive and spoke perfect English. We were immediately seated and got a table outside at the small street terrace. The menu has several starters, ramens, currys, noodles and teppanyaki. For each meal it's possible to chose the type of noodles. We tried the Gyoza which come with a special, a bit spicy sauce. They were good, however not crunchy at all. For the mains we took the Shirodashi Ramen and the Seared Nuoc Cham Tuna. The ramen had a tasty chicken/miso broth and plenty of toppings. The egg was however hard boiled. The Tuna was not overcooked and was juicy. It was accompanied with quinoa and seasonal steamed vegetables. Taken that this is a chain and a restaurant in a shopping mall it was good value for the money and a good pit stop before continuing the shopping.

Location and ambiance, however, do not make up for the lack of zest in the food and lukewarm attitude of the wait staff. Annoyance number one: you must walk over a very large grated vent in order to ascend the stairs leading into the restaurant. No big deal if this was a causal restaurant, but seeing as this is a slightly upscale establishment, I dolled myself up a bit and wore a modest heel. Hours later as I teetered over a grated vent, I regretted my wardrobe selection. Annoyance number two: mediocre house wine. My love and I knew going into our outing, that we were going to fork over a pretty penny in order to dine. No problem. In our naiveté we assumed that you get what you pay for. Not in this case. I ordered the house white to pair with our unmemorable appetizer. Didn't even finish my wine. It tasted like it came out of a box. The hibachi was ok. Nothing spectacular. I had shrimp and chicken. The meal lacked depth. I watched the chef cook, and noticed him seasoning the food, but did not taste anything but soy sauce and butter once it was served on my plate. Not to be discouraged, I set my hibachi aside and ordered from the sushi bar. Fish was fresh. Salmon and Tuna were particularly good, and wasabi was not overpowering. Service was average. Hostess's and waiters' attitudes were pretentious. Then again, TEFAF was being held in town that week which can attribute to airs being particularly high. Not great enough to rave, but not bad enough to delete from my restaurant dossier.

Many good restaurants in Eindhoven require reservations over the weekend in order to dine in. After being rejected prior at other restaurants due to a lack of reservations, we were pleasantly surprised and happy to know there were many seats available at this restaurant. We were also pleasantly surprised when the host told us about their gourmet buffet. The upstairs is an ala cart Japanese restaurant while the downstairs area is devoted to their buffet. The buffet offerings included everything from raw oysters, sushi and sashimi, to delicious warm entrées like mushrooms and garlic and sautéed bok choy along with fried rice and fried noodles. The salad offerings were fresh and absolutely delicious. They have cold plates for the cold food options and heated plates for the hot food entrées. The service staff was amazingly kind and helpful. All reasons we would definitely come back to this establishment.
