I went to this place for the first time and it was soooooo good. I will definitely be coming here again to try some other foods.

Tofu ramen with miso soup and all available garnishes

Stopped by this ramen joint for lunch on a road trip to the States. It was really busy when we came, as it was peak rush hour and the location itself is pretty small, so it got full really quickly. A big reason as to why I'm choosing to give it a good review is the abundance of options they have. Although they're known for their ramen, they have baos, korean burritos, naan, and even mochi ice cream! I got the tofu ramen -- the tofu in it was really good, I could tell that it was freshly fried. The ramen itself, however, did not taste like authentic Japanese ramen at all. With my ramen, I got all the possible add-on garnishes, and because of the kimchi and hot chilli sauce, my soup base was actually very sour, and did not taste like the miso I originally selected. If you come, try not to get overly excited about the unlimited garnishes option; I did, and my meal suffered accordingly! Although this place is technically a more lax restaurant, with no actual wait staff, all the servers who I interacted with were friendly and sweet. The cashier walked me through the whole menu, even offering me samples, while the server never once complained about me adding additional garnishes. Verdict: Although the ramen does not taste like traditional ramen, I would still recommend for Yelpers to try it out for themselves, and to check out the restaurant's other options!

We decided to try a new Ramen restaurant while traveling in Michigan. The restaurant is located in downtown Battle Creek slightly away from the main strip. The building has a hip artistic feel to it with a really cool mural on the side of the restaurant. We ordered a little bit of everything to try from Umami. We had five bowls of Ramen, 4 Egg rolls (2 Shrimp and 2 Chicken), and a Chicken Teriyaki dish. The Ramen is a good portion size, but lacks flavor and depth. The Chicken Teriyaki had big chunks of meat and tasted great. The highlight of the meal were the Egg rolls. They are 2 -3 times bigger than a normal Egg roll and taste great. The employee that helped me with my order was friendly and helped guide me through their ordering process.

GREAT for Kalamazoo/Battle Creek area, so adjust your expectations accordingly. Umami Ramen is fusion-y to me because the flavors are lean a little bit Thai-like to me (perfect balance of sweet, sour & salty). Makes sense because the owner was born in Thailand! Although it's not "traditional" ramen, I really enjoyed my meal here. I had: *Brisket Ramen with Tonkotsu Broth with added pickled egg: The broth itself was pretty well-developed - you can tell some TLC went in it. I added a chili sauce that made my ramen a little bit tangy but I liked it. The brisket was perfect - very tender. I also liked that the pickled egg broke up some of the richness. It was a pretty big portion - couldn't finish all the noodles in it but you best believe I slurped up all the broth! *Spam Slider: It's exactly what it sounds like...spam in some bread (king's hawaiian I believe?) haha. You can also pick your own toppings on this. I chose the pickled vegetables to add some dimension. I am a spam fan, so this was also a winner in my book. I was indecisive and couldn't pick 1 of the 3 sauces so I asked for all 3 on the side - the guy working was so nice about it too. Favorite ended up being the horseradish mayo! Umami Ramen is a pretty small set up: you order & pay towards the back, move down the line like subway - where you can pick your toppings - and then they'll bring it out to you! Since Umami is only a 5-10 minute walk from work, I'll definitely be back!

Hours of operation are not updated! We drove here to eat and came across a temporarily closed sign...how frustrating!!

I did not like the food here but I do know a lot of others do so I think it's more of a preference than bad food.

Omg, the sushi burritos and THE Ramen noodles!!!!! You have to try it. We enjoyed it very muchread more

Such a cool spot!…read more We visited Toba on a recent Saturday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised by this cute little spot! The menu is lengthy with so many options to choose from! We were a little overwhelmed by the choices at first, but we quickly decided to try several different things to get a better idea of the flavors and what we might like best! We started with a house salad, which was so delicious! Fresh, yummy ingredients with a truly delightful ginger dressing! Hugh flavor! Next we ordered the Gyoza - this dish was AMAZING! The dumplings were perfectly cooked and served with a delicious traditional dipping sauce. Also included was a garnish slaw with a spicy mayo dressing - this complimented the dish SO well. This dish was honestly our favorite part of our entire visit and we highly recommend!! Of course we had to try a sushi burrito which is possibly their most unique offering! I've never heard of sushi in a burrito form before Toba, what a great idea!! It's basically a giant, handheld, wrapped up piece of sushi! We chose the Toba Burrito with steamed shrimp, shrimp tempura, spicy crab salad, avocado, tempura flakes, eel sauce, and spicy mayo. This was a delicious combination! Because it's in a burrito the ingredients are thicker compared to sushi, and you can taste each addition better, but my husband and I both agreed that while this was a very fun item to try, we prefer the regular sushi rolls to the burrito. Smaller bites of each combo of flavors is our preference. :) We also got a K-zoo sushi roll which was delicious but not as chilled as I expected it to be. These pieces were large, (bigger than a one bite piece of sushi) but packed with quality, fresh ingredients with really great flavors!! My husband and I both ordered a cup of tea, both were delicious and perfect for a cloudy, rainy day!! There are several options to choose from, we asked our waiter for further explanation and recommendations. :) There are so many more options to try at Toba - we will definitely be back to try more things, the ramen for one! :) The service at Toba was excellent! Our server was very attentive and helpful! Our order arrived very quickly and in perfect stages since we tried so many different things! The atmosphere is modern and seating is consolidated to a fairly small area. We were seated in the cutest front booth, right in the window. Best seat in the house, I'd say! Kalamazoo is beaming with great foodie spots! Toba is a great addition to the downtown scene!! :)
