I prefer Ulta over Sephora, and this is my go-to Ulta location. The store is spacious and organized. Sometimes, certain aisles have low stock or are fairly picked over, but I've always been able to find what I need. Pro tip, you can go on Ulta's website and see if they have the product (including the shade/color) you want in-stock at this location to save you the disappointment. Typically, this store is lacking in floor staff, but on my most recent visit, I noticed there were more floaters in each section asking if I needed help. Part of me wonders if this is because of the "tweens in Sephora" craze, but I appreciated that staff checked in on me to see if I needed assistance. One of them gave me a great recommendation for an eye cream that was more effective (and less expensive!) than the one I was initially eyeing. The one piece of feedback I have is that the cashiers are typically apathetic or just very friendly. This Ulta is so inconsistent and the staff are not very helpful and rude. They never have what I'm looking for in stock. Today I asked if there was anyone doing eyebrows and was told no we are not taking any appointments and then later a patron was standing at the salon register to get her eyebrows waxed because they were doing eyebrow services. When I did check out the gal at the register asked if I found what I was looking for and I named two things I couldn't get... Avatar Palette and Gucci Bloom fragrance and the response was "oh!" And she was pretty much an insolent little brat the rest of the transaction, when I asked if I had any rewards I was told no without her even looking was handed my receipt without a thank you or any other word. I went in for foundation. I was interested in changing brands, so needed advice and color matched. Initially, no one was in the prestige section so I just perused the aisles. Then someone (who I perceived to be in management) walked up and asked if I was doing ok. This was Gabby. I explained what I needed. Gabby listened and tried a few foundations until she found the perfect one that addressed my concerns. Afterwards, I asked her to help with another product and again, she was great and being patient, listening to what I wanted, and finding what I wanted. I was SO excited to go buy a perfume I've been wanting to buy for awhile at this Ulta. I also planned to buy a few other items while I was there. The perfume I wanted was locked up because it's expensive. I could not find anyone to help me. I eventually saw three women just standing by the front registers just casually talking to each other. I stared at them for about five minutes, but I guess their conversation was too important to help me. So, I left without buying anything, again they did not stop their conversation as I walked right by them on my way out. Instead, I drove over to the Sephora in Clay Terrace where they happily helped me and accepted my money. Go to Sephora instead of this Ulta. There is plenty of options here and I love that you can get both high end and lower cost options. They have all their samples taped in place and signs around that says "do not touch. My daughter LOVES getting her brows done here and we will keep coming here ONLY for Camilla to do her brows. MY daughter and I were walking around waiting for her appointment just to be stalked by one particular employee. She went towards the back, talked with a few other ladies working here and when I looked up they are all staring at us. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, and some with great makeup! My only issue is that so many of the good products were out of stock! The store seemed a bit messy, with things out of place or unorganized. I was a little upset when an item I wanted to purchase was incorrectly in a clearance area so I passed on the item. I have had my haircut at ULTA for over 2 years. The cut, blowout and style are great. Initially they charged $37 which is very reasonable but they kept raising the price to $42 then $47. I started asking how much it was when I made the appointment. I was looking for a salon which was above a Great Clips but less than an higher end place. Getting a $57 haircut (including a 20% tip) every 6 to 8 weeks is bit much for my budget. I started going much longer between haircuts. If it was in a more expensive city like Chicago, San Francisco, NYC, I could see the reason for substantial price increases. This is why I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 stars. I made the trip to the Carmel Ulta because I'd been trying to track down a sold out highlighter for a couple of months. Today, the Ulta website showed this location had received one in their shipment. I called to make sure this was accurate. The girl I spoke with on the phone was willing to go check on its existence, and to put the item aside for me until I could get there. Did I mention I'd been trying to get my hands on it for months? It was a mad dash to Carmel, I assure you. Upon my arrival, I sensed how different this location is from my local Ulta. As soon as I walked in, I was cheerfully greeted by several associates. For someone who might be new to prestige cosmetics, I realize this environment might feel a little alienating; a gigantic store filled to the brim with lotions and potions, and beautifully made up women bustling around. However, I watched as the artists at this location made everyone who walked through the door feel welcome and assisted. In each area of the store, the associates were eager to point out new products for me to try. They were all very helpful in deciding on a shadow palette that will allow me to create a particular look for Halloween . At checkout, the cashier was an absolute pleasure to make small talk with. Side note- I noticed this location has the infamous Benefit Brow Bar. I did not make use of this service, but after seeing a few sets of gorgeous eyebrows leaving, I'll be sure to book an appointment the next time mine need a waxing. Ugh, I hate that I'm doing this. Either I have really bad luck with timing my store visits or they never get any shipments of items. Feels like during every visit I've had since I posted my initial review, I'm disappointed by the major lack of the products I need/want. And it's not just one brand. It's hair color, concealers, face wash, mascaras, etc. Everything across the board. What gives, Ulta? I end up going to the corner drugstore that has those brands and finding what I'm looking for there, but I expect the beauty store to carry the big-name beauty products I need. read more

Be sure to ask what "level" your stylist is before booking and check the cost of whatever you are having done. I had to go to this salon in a pinch for a blow dry and style, thinking I would spend $25-40 as I typically do at my usual salon. I was charged $57. When I called to ask the manager if this price was correct, she rudely told me the stylist "did me a favor" by not charging an extra $15-20 for the curling iron she used to style, as that's extra. Never have I heard of a blow dry and style costing this much. My stylist was great, but the cost was absolutely absurd for the services I received. read more

I had previously had an ombré coloring, but one day decided that I wanted it brown again. This was a mistake. So, I went to Ulta and was assessed by Tiffany, the hair salon manager and she told me up front that she felt my hair was too damaged to get back blonde at that time. Although I was upset at first, I really appreciated her being honest with me and really caring about the condition my hair was in, instead of just doing it for the money. I came in twice to get conditioning treatments and the third time, she did a balayage coloring on my hair. I absolutely love my hair now and it is back blonde! I bought a color correcting palette from this Ulta and had to return it because it had been opened. There was a hair in one of the colors and another color had been smeared around and had some kind of speck of an unknown material. It kind of looked like a scab. I went in to return it and the cashier told me I could try to find one to exchange it. She also called up an employee to help look for one. I watched the woman helping me walk over to one shelf, look for 2 seconds and then go back to doing something completely unrelated to my palette. I decided to go up and just get my money back and I watched tons of employees chatting with each other while there was a line of customers piling up. I expect more from Ulta. read more

I am writing this on behalf of my wife as she does not have a Yelp account plus the fact that I witnessed this shameful attempt at a purple streaking job by this salon. My wife went in for a shampoo and cut along with a purple streak job. They did a horrible job cutting her hair and basically butchered it. She was supposed to return a week later for the purple streaking. I guess I should have tried to talk her out of it but I didn't. The girl who attempted to streak her hair ended up dying her entire head purple and after my wife freaked out about it she then attempted to dye some spots or streaks back to blonde again and it ended up being orange. Yes; her entire head of hair was orange. My wife was so upset she just walked out with wet orange hair. I don't even know what to say. Spacious building with a wide variety of everything beauty related. Parking is great and prices are fair. The staff is also very friendly but you usually have to wait a little while to be assisted. I like going here for all of my different needs because I like having a lot of choices but also love being able to ask questions before I buy something.
