First of all, IDK how they're able to call themselves SPCA as they are not associated in ASPCA. I'm in the national data base and have adopted pets thru ASPCA for over 20 years. Sadly, these folks don't seem to get animals. I am truly worried that these people are not qualified to assess individual animals' needs and will fail to place their animals in appropriate homes. They have general (and, frankly, arbitrary) guidelines for adopting out pets and the people I spoke to couldn't speak to any individual pet's traits or needs. It was a onerous, depressing and frustrating process just to locate pets on their site and after you spend a long, long time filling out repetitive forms, you have to go over and confirm all the answers on the phone with someone who doesn't have specific knowledge of the animal involved. Truly head spinning. Also, the service there is terrible, they will NOT return calls, you always have to call back and hope to get someone. A long time ago, I adopted a very young feral Tabby cat. It was not ready for adoption and of course you do not realize this, until it goes home with you. The people who work at the SPCA have already established a bond with these cats. The SPCA paperwork I signed verifies that if it doesn't work out, to bring the cat back within at least a week, so it is not attached in any way. The cat kept hissing and wasn't happy. It was scared of me and I felt it wasn't a good fit. I returned it within a week, like I was told to, and all they asked was if it had bitten anyone. It did not, and I was not going to keep a cat that was not ready for adoption. Since I worked a lot of overtime, breaking in a wild cat seemed impossible at the time. I guess I should've just let it go out into the wild, for they black marked me forever for returning it, and when I tried to adopt a cat from them a few years later, they made an excuse that the cat was sick, and that I was definitely getting the cat, once it was well. When I called up to see how the cat was doing, they told me a bunch of lies of how I could not adopt the cat. I was so shocked when they said I adopted many cats and even dogs, and returned them all. I was crying at this point, for I only ever adopted one cat from them and returned it. I was allowed to return it, if it didn't work out. I explained how I never ever adopted dogs from them nor anywhere else, and how I only returned one young cat to them. They had the nerve to tell me there are plenty of other adoption agencies to go to. They were refusing to ever let me adopt there again. They even refused anyone from my family to adopt, once they realized they were trying to adopt the very same cat for me. Mind you, my family did adopt a cat from the very same SPCA just before I had, and never returned it. How can a place like this be so cruel to not let an animal go to a loving home? I have since adopted three other cats in my lifetime and they all had/ have a great life and a loving home. I owned a dog with papers, and have taken care of many other dogs and cats during my life, growing up into adulthood. It sickens my heart to see how cruel people can be. I even delivered their mail when I worked as a carrier for the USPS. I would love to donate pet food, but how can I support an organization that doesn't support me or the welfare of animals. I love all animals and do give to other, more appreciative organizations. Animals need help, and this SPCA does not do that at all. read more

I don't know what Demetri K is talking about. This shelter has a huge cat room with a pet door leading to a large catio. Cats are free to go outside as they wish. Yes, it's a shelter and as the name implies that is what they do- provide shelter, food, and excellent care to those in their charge. We adopted two senior kitties from here and have been very impressed with the staff, volunteers, care, and cleanliness. August 25, 2020 I adopted the least adoptable cat in this place. I wasn't given a choice, actually. And seeing her, I knew she needed out. It took me THREE WEEKS to be able to touch her. When I finally could, I found thick scabs around her throat: self injury due to severe food allergies. There's absolutely NO WAY their vet couldn't have seen these, and yet I was told nothing about it. I'm a behaviorist so, for months, I did behavior modification, desensitization, counter conditioning, to get this cat to accept me and feel at peace, loved and safe. It took approximately six months, more or less, and happened slowly. She finally began to behave in a way that told me she felt safe. During this time, I had to battle her food allergies, many vet visits. She was a kind cat, no scratching or biting. While she never was able to be a lap cat or a huggy cat, she did learn to allow me to hug her, brush her, pet her. She was given everything she obviously never had, because the story they told me about her was just that, a story. I'd say she had lived her entire lifetime without a Human who habituated her to being a companion. They told me she was ten but, honestly, she was probably older. About seven weeks ago, she showed signs of illness. More than $3,000 later, after ultrasound, x-rays, many blood chemistries, all sorts of skilled treatment by my veterinarians, she began to fail this past weekend. Today at 10AM, I had to put her to rest. I was with her of course, she felt safe with me there, and she spent the last year of her life in a place where she was absolutely lacking for nothing: the best food, the best medications, toys, hidey holes, beds, and me: especially me. No they couldn't have known about the lymphoma that probably caused her to be unable to keep any food down but they did know about the food allergies, absolutely they did. I wouldn't trust these people at all. Most rescue animals have behavioral issues, they weren't dumped for no reason; so when you adopt, you have to be prepared for months of work and effort. But to ignore an obvious sign of physical illness that requires treatment is absolutely unacceptable. This isn't "rescue", for anyone, for no one at all. Be very careful. read more

Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! I dropped my cat off to get neutered & when I went to pick him up not only was he absolutely terrified of the world he was completely soaked in his own urine along with his cage and blanket!! This company that claims to "Love" animals left him locked in a cage for over eight hours without letting him out to use a litter box. When I had said something to the nurse about him being completely drenched in urine she had said that the entire staff didn't notice.... I had smelled the urine right when she had brought him out to me!!! My cat is a loving, play filled cat who now after coming to the SPCA won't even let his father or me (his mother) touch him. I am very disappointed and disgusted with the service and treatment my cat received as a patient at the SPCA!!! read more

I tried to adopt an older dog. They were uncommunicative and rude on more than one occasion, and they did completely unnecessary 'exploratory surgery" on her, a 13 year old dog. They never returned my calls about the dog's well-being, but claimed they left messages on my phone. When she was brought back for a wellness check they refused to give her back to me. There were other people that had come to get their adoptions and were told, "oh no they're not ready yet". The families were clearly upset about not being told. why do they keep people hanging? After some of their comments, I believe that one of their technicians wanted the dog that I had adopted and that's why they wouldn't give her back. They definitely have some control issues. It seems like they like to jerk people around just to show who's in charge. I documented the experience, sent a copy to every board member and the director and got zero response. And, they never offered a receipt for any the donations I made. Something every other shelter asks when you bring them supplies. And if they rebut this comment I will be happy to publish the 6 page letter relating the whole miserable experience. read more

We went to adopt a kitten, unfortunately the people at the clinic did not take the proper steps once they realized the kitten might be sick and instead of keeping him to monitor him they sent him with us. Once we realized he was sick we took him to our local vet but by then he had infected our other cat. Now the kitten is sick again. Stay away from this shelter they have cost us hundreds of dollars in vet bills that could of been avoided if they had taken the proper steps. I went there two times to adopt a dog from them and they dissed me both times.. I feel that they have some power control issues and that they were dishonest with me by lying to me 2x stating the dog didnt get along with cats and then stating the dog was being adopted now two weeks later is still not adopted so they lied to me. Just bad vibes and the dog waits to have a good home when he could be in one right now with me. I have owned other pets my dog and cat lived to 14 and 18 years respectively. Just my opinion . I got my last dog off craiglist because they were nasty the first time I went there so I guess thats what Ill do againcan stop with trying to act like they are the authority on dogs and cats and just be decent people . We adopted our first dog from the Ulster County SPCA and we are so glad we came here to look for her. These folks take their jobs very seriously as was shown through our adoption process. The facility is clean and friendly with staff who obviously care and love animals. We picked out a dog on our first visit and began the adoption process. Our puppy was too young to adopt (they wouldn't let us take her until she was old enough and was fixed) so we agreed to board her as fosters for a couple of weeks until she was old enough for the surgery. Before we could take her home, an officer came to our house and inspected the premises and asked many questions (this is after filling out a full application). I was impressed by his professionalism. After we were approved we were able to take our puppy home. The fees were nominal, especially considering the costs of the surgery and medical tests that had to be performed before they would release the dog. Once they did, we had a wonderful life companion. If any of the above sounds like a hassle, then think about why you are adopting. As someone who volunteered at a shelter I know how important it is to have potential adopters vetted. I felt confident after going through the process that this shelter is excellent. read more

Yes, it is a very clean and well run shelter ULSTER SPCA. You do not feel hearbroken after leaving and sad for all the animals. They must have been left a lot of money from some one to keep it up like that. Poor Dutchess County SPCA. That place is so sad and pathetic. I ended up adopting an animal from them (Dutchess)(cat) who had been there for a year just to get her out of there. I wish people would go there first and adopt (Dutchess). I've been a pet owner all my life and I have a German Shepard who at the time of my visit to the SPCA, was about 10 years old. He was never neutered but was a peaceful dog who lived with cats all his life and we never had a problem with him and our cats. My little kitty was hit by a car so to cheer my family up, we decided to go adopt a kitten. When my mom and I went in, we fell in love with two adorable kittens and as we started the adoption process, it took a long time and at the end we were disappointed that we were not allowe to adopt them because our dog was not neutered but we explained that our dog was 10 years old and we weren't gonna put him through the pain now. They told us that they would give us a call within two days if we could adopt yet no one ever called us. I was very disappointed considering we were willing to take two kittens off their hands and they denied us although we are big pet lovers and all of our animals have been rescues. But, there is a happy ending! We found a scared skinny kitty that was left stranded in Newburgh and we took her in and now she's fluffy and loves to be cuddled! read more
