I brought in my precious Martin HD-28 acoustic for a repair and a setup after reading great testimonials, and he took the time to walk me through not only the process of the repair, but also gave me a necessary lesson on humidifiers for the room and guitar case in these dry New York winters which can cause the wood to shrink and eventually crack on delicate instruments. As a recent transplant from Los Angeles, I had never had to worry about these temperature and humidity issues, but now I'm an "evangelist" about this and I've been sharing this advice to all of my musician friends and bandmates, thanks to Farhad's great advice! He also stands by his warranty on his setups, and just performed an expert tune-up on my Martin after the initial set up for no charge, while I brought the guitar to the shop (by appointment). He is also a very friendly guy, and makes his own bespoke line of electric guitars and pedals, and I've spoken to one of his employees? apprentices? partners? also working on the repair bench at Southside Guitars in Williamsburg, which to me exemplifies a real community of professional craftsmen and musicians who are passionate about guitars. I know where I'll be taking my guitars from now on. I've spent a lot of time finding "my" guitar techs/luthiers in LA over the years, and I'm so happy to have found Farhad here in Williamsburg. I will recommend him to everyone I know in New York.

They so thoroughly enjoy what they do and that simply makes it impossible for you not to enjoy their music! From the very first email I exchanged with Solange she was unbelievably kind, patient, and very on top of things (which, trust me on this, is exactly what you want in all your wedding vendors). She proactively reached out at every turn to make sure she was 100% certain she knew the exact timeline of all of the day's events so that everything could run smoothly. And it did! Aside from being a wonderful person to work with, and an INCREDIBLE vocalist, Solange's joy is infectious so if you're looking for all the right vibes on your big day, Hip Control is the right choice! She even coordinated with the band to have them learn a song my dad wrote me 20 year ago and play it as a surprise father daughter dance. As for the rest of the band? Good luck keeping your jaw off the floor as they crush killer guitar solos, harmonize like angels and hit 5 key changes in Love On Top. The only thing I could say at the end of the night was "we're not worthy!!!" and two weeks later, that's still exactly how I feel!

From day one, JoJo was very professional, very passionate, and took his musical knowledge very seriously. He broke down what I thought I wanted to learn into some foundational knowledge of music, counting beats, drumming, and then translating that into the analog world of turntabling. This foundational knowledge made the transition back into the digital world of Serato and my electronic controller a very easy one, and I am forever grateful for having an instructor who doesn't just teach me what I think I want to learn, but what I need to learn in order to truly appreciate the wonderful gift that is creating and understanding music. Beyond that, JoJo's an amazing person: welcoming, a great listener, down to earth, curious about my goals and objectives, and willing to learn new approaches based on feedback. He has tons of tools and equipment to cover a lot of ground, no matter which direction you want to go. I strongly recommend JoJo as an instructor and as a professional. If your reaction is "Meh...couldn't I get that same variety from a DJ?", then I think you should keep reading. Think about any wedding you've been to. What do you remember? Centerpieces? Probably not. Food? Maybe. Music? Definitely. Music is such a huge part of people having fun at weddings. If you have a bad band, people likely won't have as good a time. DJ's are certainly fine. But, for me, there's nothing better than live music at a wedding. And, for my money, there's not a better live band than Mixtape. I'm in a band, so I'm super picky when it comes to other bands....especially for my own wedding. I was excited by how many different styles of music they could play. I knew that the parents/aunts/uncles would enjoy the older stuff that they could play, and that my friends would appreciate the current music they offer too. My expectations were already high.....and they consistently exceeded those expectations. Melanie was so helpful from the very beginning. They handled our requests beautifully. There really aren't enough superlatives to express how great they really were. We got so many unsolicited comments on how good the music was too. People were really digging it. If your wedding day is supposed to be the best day of your life, then Mixtape really needs to be the soundtrack to that day. Thanks Mixtape - you guys are true pros in every sense of the word
