A pleasant country inn, tucked out of the way in the Norfolk countryside, near Norwich. Typical beamed ceilings, open fireplaces etc. The restaurant food when we visited a few weeks ago was incredible, tasty, and we had a very enjoyable and satisfying meal. Well done to the talented chef, Jason, who came out and chatted with us to make sure our food was OK.
HOWEVER...
Unfortunately the whole evening was spoiled when we came to pay.
The food prices are at the high end, but not unreasonable for the quality, but service was far from attentive, even though we were one of only three tables occupied that night.
We had to go to the bar to settle our bill, since the waiter was by this point sat chatting with his friends in the bar, and seemed to have forgotten about us. I was paying by card, and was shocked when the landlady fairly loudly pointed out that the card machine was asking if we'd like to leave a gratuity, and then stood right next to me watching to see how much I was going to add. I felt pressured into this, especially in front of other customers at the bar. I did add a tip, but now wish that I hadn't and I should have explained why.
IT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO STAND OVER YOUR CUSTOMERS ASKING FOR A TIP.
For this reason alone, I would hesitate before ever eating there again. read more
