The Player's Palace is a step above the sort of tournament room you'd expect to find in a…read morenon-casino environment. To be honest, they're an even better place to play than the casinos in the area. Their tournaments have better structures, generally more players, and lower rakes than the under $150 buy-in tournaments at any of the casinos I've visited in Oregon and Washington. As a tournament fan I've visited almost all of them over the years, so I was pretty surprised to find the best overall deal right here in Portland. They compare easily with Reno or smaller Vegas casinos. Their ambitious schedule and variety of buy-ins (From $30 up) means that you should be able to find something to your liking pretty easily, so long as you're looking to play Hold-em. They have yet to offer any PLO tournaments, although they do offer some PLO8. The staff keeps the place running smooth and generally conflict-free. While there are the occasional blow-ups and arguments, it's nothing out of the ordinary and the floor employees will quickly calm things down when needed. The snack and beverage prices are very reasonable, with a waitress who walks around the room so you don't have to get up and miss a hand. While you're not going to get a Venetian-style experience (My biggest complaint is their lack of antes) I've found the best overall poker in town at the Player's Palace.

We got a bedroom with a city view. I used my AMEX rewards for this and got a breakfast credit and food/beverage credit. The beds were comfortable. I was so happy to see they had sensible showers for a boutique hotel. It was also nice and quiet. The rooms had everything we needed. I enjoyed the breakfasts we got here. I especially liked the coffees. The servers were very kind and accommodating. The final day I asked if I could use my beverage credit to get a bottle of wine to go and I thankfully was. I would definitely stay in this hotel again I had such a great experience.

An OK upper scale hotel disguised as a premium one in Amex FHR program…read more This hotel has some unique and thoughtful arts and designs, which distinguish itself from budget hotel brands like Fairfield and Hilton Garden Inn, but it is no way a typical FHR level hotel. The staff here were not as rude as many others have experienced, but I wouldn't say they're friendly either. I firstly arrived at 1PM but they said it's too early to check-in - a potential Amex FHR benefit not honored. Yes the benefit is "12pm check-in, when available" but it's still disappointing. The guy who checked me in went through the Amex FHR benefits but claimed that I could only get free breakfast for one because I was staying alone. I've stayed tens of Amex FHR and Chase The Edit hotels and have never heard this before. After pushing back he agreed to honor breakfast credit for two. He didn't mention anything about upgrades and I didn't get it, either. So it's like they didn't want to provide anything not guaranteed in Amex FHR. The person who stored my backpack was impatient and almost like I interrupted his rest. He just opened the door and asked me to put my backpack in the room by myself. The room condition was fair. There was no bad odor or obvious dirtiness, but the headboard was damaged. By looking at the bathroom along, you won't believe you're staying in an Amex FHR hotel. Finally they failed to apply the Amex FHR food credit and billed me the full restaurant charge. I had to stop by the front desk to have this corrected. It's almost like they just tried to list themselves on the Amex FHR program to draw more bookings but really tried hard to squeeze the cost by providing minimal benefits possible.

So that we would just be around the corner and popping in here would be easy during our stay. Luckily I was able to come in on two different days, and at different times! We got both the night life experience and the day time experience. I think I preferred the day time because it wasn't as busy. Night means cover charge ($4) and bag check. And no kids. You might see some kids during the day. What a cool place, with yummy drinks (no food), and all my favorite arcade games, and then some! They operate on a card system, so no coins needed when you visit. My pinball wizard friend had been traveling arcade ready with coins in her bag, but it turns out they weren't needed. Ground Kontrol supplies free lockers to store your stuff; just follow the instructions and don't forget your code. I learned a lot about pinball during my visits here, and played more pinball than I usually do because of that. I mean, why not? I played one of the newest pinball games, released within weeks of my visit, which was Pokemon themed, and I played one of the more vintage pinball machines, Xenon. And everything in between! It was awesome. $20 loaded onto a card will get you 15ish games, but there is a different cost depending on which game you're playing. The bathroom was clean, well lit, and I enjoy not having the little bottles of shampoo and conditioner, and instead the larger containers for less waste. It was generally quiet in the room, though you could hear the light rail go by. Wasn't a huge fan of the fact that the mini fridge was full of things that if I touched it would charged my room. If you wanted to bring leftovers from nearby restaurant, you can't because there's no space in the fridge to put things. Overall it was a good place to stay while in Portland.

So when you come in, pass the valet riveters to the left, and take the elevator up. The check-in process was fast, but the elevators took longer than they did. To access the elevators to the room floors, you need a key unless you're going down to the 1st floor or lobby. There's a restaurant on the 15th floor that had a line at the elevator because they wanted to access it without a key, and I think that's what kept the elevator area busy. The rooms are pretty big and spacious, with your usual amenities and mini-bar items. The couch was a good size. However, the TV does not move, so if you are on the couch and watching TV, the angle is sideways. The in-room dining menu is limited, with little selection, and even the restaurant/bar behind the lobby has a limited food menu. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows were very flat when you lay on them. The housekeeping staff was very friendly and nice
