Our son has been struggling in math and we got referred to UAchieve by a friend of ours. We attended for the first time today, and decided to assess both of our sons. The son that is struggling got a lot of attention and the visit with Andy has paid off already. His confidence is not where it could be, but after leaving the session (3 hours) - he seems to be in a better place! Andy is a real down to earth guy and we can tell he truly cares for the students he teaches. He even gave us some materials (worksheets) to use during the week. 100% recommend this awesome awesome place!!

This is strictly for customer service and speaking with the owner Andy for 30+ minutes. They've only been open for 3 weeks, so really new! There are no hours or open sign posted, but like I said, they're really new and on a summer schedule. I called the number that is posted on the door to see if they were open, and I'm so glad I did. He told me to just come on in. We talked about the center, classes and class-size (8-10 students), but what really got me interested was when we started talking about my child and her interests. We discssed STEM and keeping kids excited about learning, which is what every parent wants, right?... He seems to be really passionate and gets the fact that kids, all kids, learn differently - so he sets up programs specific for each kid. We talked about some sample problems that I know my kids struggled with this year, and he showed me an alternate quick eye-opening method/way that I could try to teach her. I was without my kiddo (she was at gymnastics) - but I cannot wait to stop by again to have her meet him. We are not able to do any of the summer classes, but I am excited to see what classes they will offer in the fall. Visit website for bios and courses offered. www.uachievehawaii.com Or be like me and just stop on in... I'm really glad I did.

Andy came highly recommended to my by my sister who used to work with him and said he was a great teacher. She also took her own children to him for tutoring. His flexible study program is awesome because he's even open on weekends. His prices are very reasonable and I will definitely keep bringing my son here. My son stayed for almost four hours when we took him for his first session and he came out feeling positive that he had mastered the concept he was learning.

Working on geometry with my daughter. Thanks, Andy!

She's also very proud and stubborn sometimes, so she didn't ask for help until she was almost failing the quarter. With one day before her end of quarter exam, she finally asked me to find a tutor for her. I found Lance here on Yelp and he was able to fit her in for a last minute lesson. My daughter was being very timid on our way to meet him, and I could tell she was having a major confidence issue since school generally comes easy for her. We met Lance, and they got right to work as I sat at a nearby table to give them space, even though I'm pretty protective of my baby around strangers. After the hour was up, I saw the confidence back in my little girl's eyes again, and she was all smiles and compliments as we talked about how she liked Lance, and how the lesson went. She said she really likes him, and that he took the time to explain everything in detail. She also said he made the lesson really fun, and that it wasn't nearly as bad as she thought it was going to be. She was pretty stoked about the composition book he gave her with all of their notes and sample equations in it from her lesson. We will definitely be coming back, Lance really did a great job. Seeing my little girl that excited about learning, and watching that light return to her eyes made it worth every penny.

We couldn't really tell if she was just really shy or was delayed in speech. What we liked about MICAA was that they doubled as behavior analysts and as a Kindergarten prep. We knew we wanted to enroll her in private school so it really was a double purpose. The tutors were amazing and so patient with my daughter. I believe she had Kylie, Cari and Alissa (as well as Luke who is no longer with them). They were all very patient and accommodating, helping my daughter blossom. They made sure we were always kept up to date by uploading electronic copies of what was done during class. My husband and I rarely brought her due to work and had grandma bring her, so it was really helpful to see what she was doing even though we weren't there. We opted for 1hr sessions which at first I thought was pretty long for a 3-4 year old but they keep the lessons engaging enough to keep their attention. If you decide to stick around, they have different parking options - paid street parking, paid lot parking and free parking across the street in Whole Foods/Ward. They are located perfectly because there are so many coffee shops, retail stores, parks and Ala Moana Beach within walking distance. The only take away was that Lins Snack Shop was downstairs making it a popular "post class" treat every week. In the end, my daughter got into both Punahou and 'Iolani - they even manifested it for us! Thank you, MICAA!

Admittedly, with our older child, we did not go this route because we thought it was a bit ridiculous to send a 4 year old to tutoring to get into kindergarten...esp a child who is very well behaved and academically advanced. However, despite that, the older child had difficulties going into the interview rooms and feeling comfortable working with unfamiliar adults at the interviews. The outcome wasn't what we had hoped and dreamed for her. We decided for our younger child that we'd bite the bullet and pay the hefty price tag to do all that we could to help her feel more comfortable and prepared for the interviews. And it worked! She got into our top choice after having a very easy (and fun, as she said) time at the interviews. The schools don't seem to be looking for the brightest student, but rather the student who can adapt to new environments, situations, peers, and adults. They seem to be looking for children who feel comfortable engaging and communicating effectively in these new environments with new people. Juku not only prepared our child academically, but socially with peers and adults. This was done through both the mock interviews and also switching up who the children work with 1:1 each time. The tutors are all very kind, fun, and encouraging. My child really enjoyed going! Though it can be shocking to feel the need to send a child to a tutor for a kindergarten interview, the way we looked at it, is that we are providing her with all the tools we can to help her succeed. If it works, great, and if not, we know we did all that we could to help her.

Understanding that the SSAT is one of the metrics by which applicants are measured, we decided to take him to Juku to see how he would fare. After the initial test, Dr. Takahashi suggested that he would benefit from tutoring so we had him spend 2 hours twice a week starting in May with some breaks during the summer. To my surprise, he really enjoyed Juku! I have never heard him label school as fun so I had to ask how Juku was different from school. His reasons were "one to one" attention, "learning at my own pace", and learning from tutors who were "fun and eager to teach". He actually likes it so much that he wanted to continue tutoring after taking the SSAT! He took the SSAT in November, performed above the target range for the most competitive schools, and was ultimately admitted to all of the schools to which we applied. I can't say how much of a role his test scores played in his acceptances, but I think test-taking is a kind of skill useful for any student. He learned specific test-taking strategies for the SSAT, like skipping questions to avoid losing too many points. We also felt the practice tests at Juku helped him familiarize himself with the exam setting. Finally, Juku was available for any question about the application process along the way, a valuable resource in and of itself.
