The MonkeyPod Mākeke at Honolulu Waldorf School is a cozy shop open for 45 minutes after school on Fridays. Created and run by parents, it has beautiful Waldorf art supplies: beeswax molding clay, watercolors, colored pencils, and coloring blocks - alongside small treasures children love to choose for themselves or friends: journals, necklaces, and other thoughtful trinkets under $3. You'll also find handcrafted gifts like felt leis made with care by parents and teachers. I purchased one for Mother's Day! It is a warm, intentional space that brings joy to the children and community alike.

I have two children attending HWS and our experience has been life changing. Our kindergartner and 5th grader both love their teachers and school. We love the community and the beauty HWS brings to our family daily. Our kids radiate confidence and have a love for learning. The teachers are nurturing, intentional and genuinely care for each child. It's not just a school but our family.

Thanks to Yelp and the Honolulu Star Advertiser for pointing me to the Waldorfaire today, 10/27/2012. The Waldorfaire is a throwback to the more simple pleasures of youth that I just simply would have loved back when I was a kid. Maybe I am soaking it all in now and reliving the childhood that I never really got growing up. In either case, coming here was great and it just made me smile. It's one of those nostalgia things that gives life some perspective - like how nature seems to do too. Waldorfaire was neat. It was definitely kid centric, but it also had the parents and other adults busy too. I must've spent about 3 hours there before hitting up Starbucks and Subway for lunch, then eventually, Haunama Bay for some relaxation and stress relief. Boy did I need it! The faire itself was great and I wish that they could hold them more often. Loved the lack of admission fee, which was just super awesome. Plenty activities for the kids and I just immersed myself and found my inner child and it was great. Never in my life did I have as much fun as I did today - apart from traveling and running marathons - of course. :-) Waldorf School has 3 campuses on Oahu that I know of. Kahala, Aina Haina, and their flagship campus in Niu Valley. They are a small private school that focuses on early childhood development. I probably would have gone to this school way back in the 1980's if my parents did know about this school and not send me to public school. The campus here at Waldorf is quite nice and you can tell it's very well maintained. I do love the Niu Valley campus and how it is laid out and can co-exist with the community. Its very peaceful here. I enjoyed my time here. I wondered if things could have been different for me if I came from a private school. Who knows. #Thoughtoftheday. Support local! A+

They have a variety of different activities as well as a cute little area to pick a pumpkin. The school works hard to put on this annual event. When you walk around, you can tell that the parents and students really take pride in their school. They had everything imaginable for a kid to do. Here are just a few of the things that we did while there: hali hali horse rides, face painting, pumpkin bowling, make a pumpkin bead bracelet, bean bag toss, ring toss, petting zoo, and pick a pumpkin. They also had a little area where the kids could ride little ponies. We didn't go on that because the line was so long but maybe next time we can plan ahead. They don't have available parking but you can park in a nearby lot and they have a shuttle that takes you to the festival. We will definitely be going back again next year. It was much more entertaining for kids than just going to a regular pumpkin patch.

They have a short bleacher outdoors so you might be more comfortable to bring your own collapsible chair. I saw a few families sitting on the stage edge. The scoreboard counts down time remaining but doesn't keep score. Bud's team only had one practice on Thursday prior to this first game. Considering this, we will keep a watchful and positive outlook for the rest of the season.

I give 1 star because of a particular 5th grade teacher that has decided to target our son. From making absurd rules about taking shoes off in her classroom and banning jackets, forcing students to stay after school hours without prior notice, and incessant yelling and nagging, she's made the last year of Aina Haina for my son to be psychologically and emotionally damaging. My son who's never had issues in his prior years at Aina Haina hated going to school because of her. If you email her asking why she said or did something, she will never admit anything is wrong and brush it off with "there's been another misunderstanding....moving forward, I would like to focus on his education..." Worst 5th grade teacher. I hope she retires this year so no other child experiences what my son experienced.

He really teaches in a way that EVERY child learns... so much so that now my son who was pegged by other teachers as "slow" and having a"poor attention span" is getting nearly straight A's and excelling in every aspect. Funny how one good teacher, one who loves their job and puts the child's interest first, can change a child's outlook and performance in school for the better. Thank you Mr. Sutton.

Then I transferred to Liholiho Elementary for first grade in 1988 and 1989. Thank goodness for yearbooks, because otherwise I would forget the year. I flunked first grade from Liholiho, and then in 1989 and 1990 I transferred back to Kauluwela for first grade. Though I was born and raised in Honolulu, English is my second language. I knew not my ABCs and I knew not how to read up to that point at Liholiho. I recalled I got pulled out of class at Liholiho where a teacher specialist mostly had me trace pictures. It was at Liholiho that I recalled that my first grade teacher popped in the 1989 Moonwalker VHS for our class to watch. After watching the Moonwalker film at Liholiho and at my family gatherings, my older sibling recorded me beatboxing, scat singing, and singing one of the songs from the Moonwalker film. I was six-years-old then. I still have the Liholiho Elementary picture taken of me on the playground holding an orange baseball bat. I do recall we were given seeds to plant around Liholiho Elementary... I chose the seed that would grow a blue flower. I planted it somewhere around the campus and as I grew older, I remember where I planted those seeds. I now see those blue flowers grown. Today, as an adult, I love to read daily, for fun and enjoyment. I love to write. I also help students with mathematics throughout the state of Hawaii. I also beatbox throughout the state of Hawaii and the world, speaking at conferences, and schools. Liholiho Elementary students were among 300 in attendance when I performed and spoke at the 25th Chevron Honolulu Speech Festival at the McKinley High School Auditorium. -Jason Tom
