This is a bar. Or perhaps better said, what a bar can be when it unabashedly embraces being a bar, pure and simple...a bar's bar, if you will. Perhaps that's why it's had some celebrity guests over the years despite its small stature and being tucked away a bit (photos on the wall of a few, including Bill Clinton...alas, don't think I made the cut just yet to find myself up there, but there's time). Small, cozy space, with nearly every seat filled. I don't speak the language, but you could tell there was a room full of lively conversations. There are some snack type foods (I have one pic posted), but you go here for beer and either conversation or just relaxation, not a meal (if others disagree, I won't argue). Classic style of service that I love for those unfamiliar with it. Order. Your beer arrives, and the server/bartender makes a slash on a paper card at the table. When that beer is empty, another arrives, and another slash mark is made. Repeat as often as you wish/are safely able. When done, cover the glass, and the tallies are added up. Pay (note, cash only as of the day I'm posting, and that sounded like a very longstanding policy). I look forward to returning some time. read more

Save yourself the bother & money, skip this pub that's famous for Bill Clinton visiting when in Prague. Very unwelcoming & unfriendly to tourists. I actually thought we weren't going to be served our beers since the 2 beertenders kept ignoring us. My boots were actually sticking to the dirty floor! Plenty of other establishments to enjoy a beer. read more

I believe they cater to a later night crowd, however, on a brisk Sunday morning they also provide a mean cup of coffee and an awesome plate of breakfast. I was wandering old town near the famous Charles Bridge and this place was open without a soul inside. I think they just opened, nevertheless, they were ready for business. I ordered coffee, of course, and get this, ... smoked duck breast and an egg. It was amazing, and who would have thought they'd pair so well together? It was the perfect breakfast in an awesome area and set the tone for an awesome day. If you're ever wandering these same streets, you really should treat yourself. You'll be glad you did, oh, and you won't break the bank either. Cheers! read more

What a fun place to be! Apparently Bill Clinton was here before. Regardless, my bf and I walked in, it was completely packed. The host went, 'want to come in?' (I was thinking, why else am I here? lol) there weren't empty seats, mostly bier garten style with benches, so the host sat us down with some other locals. Then he asked, 'want beer?'. I go, 'ya, may I have a menu?' He came back with 2 beers. I was like what kind are those? He went, 'they are beer' lol apparently they only serve one beer at the place when we were there haha. People from Prague held their pride on their national beer, Pilsner Urquell, which is what we had. It's great from tap. The locals we met at our table were super nice. We talked, and they bought us a round haha. This was one of my greatest memory in Europe. read more

This place is awesome; amazing such a place exists in the middle of the tourist quarter. We walked by it 2 or 3 times before walking down the short alley into the narrow, boisterous pub filled with locals. This is the real deal and just what we were looking for. It was packed, but the waiter was able to seat our family of 5 (teens included) at a table next to 4 guys that looked like they had come from work, but had been there a while. You will be brought beer continuously until you say stop - I glanced at the tally on the scrap of paper by our compatriots and counted the chicken scratches that amounted to 6 beers each. Yes, they were in a cheery state of mind, but unlike us Americans, controlled and civilized in their state of mild intoxication. It was wonderful hearing the language throughout, of course. My wife and I ordered our "pivos" - you can't do better than the ubiquitous Pilsner Urquell on tap. People often complain about a lack of warmth in Prague waitstaff, and this was no exception - it's just the way it is, but a few "please" and "thanks" in our butchered Czech and we were getting smiles in no time. Service was super fast and efficient. Our basic German skills worked on the menus (and later with the staff), and we ended up with some good stuff. I had what amounted to a battered and deep fried pork cutlet. My wife had Goulash - both were excellent. Being of Czech heritage, I grew up eating this stuff. Kids had pork/potato pancakes. This isn't fine dining by any stretch, just great plates of well prepared pub food that go perfect with beer, and at very reasonable prices. Our first stop in Prague at the recommendation of a friend. It's very simple; don't expect an amazing experience. A series of tables, mostly locals, a few tourists. As far as I can tell, they serve one type of beer: Pilsner Urquell (probably wrong here but everyone was drinking the same) Sit at a table where there's space. Most likely you are sharing the table. We had a few beers and a sausage. The server will put a mark on a blank piece of paper to tally your beers. I couldn't help but notice that the couple who were sharing our table had 10 and it was probably 3pm. read more

This is a tough pub to find when using basic directions, but very much worth it when you do find it. This is very much a local type pub, but also the type that you want to half a half liter or three in before going on your way. Bill Clinton did, as you can see via the picture of him on the wall. Though the pilsner is great and fresh here, know your Czech beer etiquette before attending. Don't drink your beer until everyone at your table has a beer. Individually cheer with everyone before drinking. Tip your server or bartender directly. And give up your seat and table to anyone elderly that enters. The one problem that we ran into at this pub is a problem you can have in several Praha 1 pubs for locals: bartenders will often ignore female customers, and look to the male of the group for the order. Seriously loved this place. This was our first stop and glad it was. We wanted a little bit of the local flavor, a little bit of beer (or a lot?) and some tasty Czech grub. We enjoyed the atmosphere. The food was fab. Get the beer cheese (it's famous) and also the tartar was a healthy portion and I love that we got to mix it! For locals only, tourist not welcome. Staff was rude and would ignore you, couldn't or wouldn't speak any English. Weird since it's in the heart of the tourist district. Didn't try the food, but was finally able to try the highly spoke of beer. The beer was very disappointing, if you have been to America think Steel Reserve 211. Don't waste your money go elsewhere if you want an enjoyable experience at a pub on your vacation. read more

I really liked this place. As others have mentioned, you just go in, find a place to sit (go early or make a reservation) and they will bring you beer after beer. The only time you need to order is if you want food. Based on other people's reviews, we ordered the steak tartare, the beer cheese, and the pickled herring with onion. The beer cheese (which others raved about) was our least favorite of the three, but the other two dishes more than made up for it. The tables are shared among different groups and everyone we sat with (mostly regulars) were very friendly. The prices were great, the beer was good, and the service was quick! We didn't bother with reservations and had no issues getting a table, but we did get there right when they were opening up on a weekday. Most of the tables had signs that they were reserved along with the time that reservation began (usually 5-7pm), but since we didn't stay that long it didn't really matter to us. read more

You come here to drink the finest Pilsner Urquell that you can find anywhere in Prague. It is not to be missed.
