Lots of cardio equipment - bikes, treadmills, elliptical trainers. A full range of pin weights as well as free weights, exercise balls and a stretching machine, plus shower facilities. It will be staffed between 9am-1pm and 3pm-7pm each weekday and 9am-4pm on Saturdays. I am interested in finding a fully flexible gym, however after reading the fine print, the weekly option is not that flexible. You pay fortnightly and pay a month in advance, so when you want to cancel you still have 4 weeks notice. I am still trying to find a gym that allows me to do one week on, one week off, but no luck yet. However, I do think this gym sounds very affordable. $11.95 a week for weekly members and if you sign up with a friend/family you both only pay $9.95 a week. Or if you want to pay upfront for 12 months it's $468 ($9 per week) or if you sign up with a friend/family you both only pay $364 ($7 a week) They do have personal trainers, if you need that extra one on one attention.

I'm…read moremore of a gym, weights, cardio, high-intensity-interval-training (HIIT), kind of person but was persuaded to give Pilates a go. This class in particular was a Pilates-Reformer class, so I was reassured that it involved resistance training. After arriving at Posture plus Fitness at 69 Byron Street Bulimba, I was impressed with the set-up in the studio. There was plenty of space, yet, it felt intimate. The room was very modern, simple, clean and open. It's well ventilated and cool. Big mirrors stretch along the wall as you walk in, which is used in the classes. There are 3 big reformer machines along the back of the room as well as other various equipment she has available to use. I liked the fact that it was really just the two of us in the class, along with Trish the instructor. No crowds, which makes for a more personalised session. Trish, is a very friendly and knowledgeable Pilates instructor, and I felt right at home. Trish explained all the movements and how to use the reformer, and was there from start to finish. I learnt that "T-Zone", is an area you squeeze, (your abdomen and pelvic floor) by placing your fingers on the hip bone. "Table Top" is a position you adopt by raising your legs (knees bent) so that it is parallel to the floor. In fact, we essentially had our own personal trainer in Trish. Pilates on the reformer machine was quite challenging, and resistance is increased using a set of springs. Each rep and movement is focused on a specific area of your body, your core, quads, abs, biceps, triceps etc and I worked out my whole body. The best way I can describe to the boys who love the gym and weights, is that Pilates on the reformer machine is like, going to the gym and doing weights, but you are using your own body weight as resistance, and ensuring your form is perfect as you complete each rep. It's quite challenging, but feels like a form of meditation too. I think it's a great way to compliment your gym sessions, and keep your weekly schedule interesting. It keeps your muscles toned, and maintains your strength. Each Class goes for an hour, and Trish is fantastic because unlike some gyms out there where some of my girlfriends had been to before, Trish works on each individual. I am hoping this doesn't ever change, but I'm sure that the more popular this studio becomes, this level of service will be hard to come by. The classes are also affordable, as I've signed up to do 3 more classes for $35. In today's world where we are all working longer hours with not much time for ourselves, with more stress in our lives, Posture Plus Fitness can be that one hour of escape where we are giving back to ourselves for our mind, body and soul. What I want from a gym is a great range of classes, friendly staff and the option to visit gyms in other locations. Fitness First is delivering all of these, as a national and international chain. The Elizabeth St Platinum gym is my 'home gym', and let me tell you it is something special. Spread over four floors this new mecca of health and fitness has everything any gym junkie could want - a large range of free standing and machine weights, cardio equipment, sauna and steam room and of course studios for classes. My first class was sh'bam - it's kind of like Zumba, but much more gentle and fun. The instructor was pretty cool and we had fun. There's even a disco ball in the studio! Being a premium gym I expected it to be full of scary glamazons but it wasn't. Loads of people of all shapes and sizes were there making me feel like just one of the crowd rather than a fail whale. I have a good feeling that my membership won't be going to waste.

While not the first in Brisbane, I believe it is definitely the funkiest, with rows of removable Barres, sophisticated monochrome decor and a vibe to match. It almost feels like a hidden meeting place, perhaps it hosts The Secret Society of the Shaking Solei & Sartorii... Compared to other Barre classes this style is still a heart-rate elevator, but heavily Pilates based rather than upbeat choreographed sequences or ballet technique. In a 50 minute class you will work harder than you could guess, even with "piddly" little 1kg weights. My triceps were burning the next day, but it was a minor inconvenience compared to the assault on my glutes and quads. In a good way, of course. Expect bare feet, a sweaty brow, solid leg shakes, and to cringe whenever you hear the word "pulse" forevermore. The laser vision of owner-instructor Adriana means her small technique adjustments pack a real punch, even if it initially appears that you're making a smaller movement. Barre classes are not the cheapest fitness past-time but it provides one hell of a bang for your buck. The emphasis on lengthening the muscles also helps combat some of the postural imbalances us desk-workers are prone to. A range of class types keeps it interesting as well, and if a dancer's bod is your goal, Barre is key. You will definitely work up a sweat in these intimate classes, so bring your togs to take a dip in the baths afterwards, or make like we did and head across the road for a cold one. You know, for balance.

This is the gym I have signed my teenage daughter up to so she gets a feel for a non judgmental good quality gym, without the emphasis on an unhealthy or unrealistic body image.
