Gym was never a word in my vocabulary 2 years ago...I would start/stop, start/stop (sounds familiar…read moreright??!) - I just couldn't find 'the one'. Until I moved into the West End community. Core9 West End is unlike any other 'gym' I know. They take great pride in positively impacting people's lives through a personalized fitness program. I am not just a number but a member of their family and I couldn't imagine my life without them - in fact, my life has changed because of them - I am fitter, healthier and addicted to training (argh never thought I would say this!). The trainers are exceptional and supportive and they know when to push and when not to - sometimes a good belting on the boxing bag is all it takes to improve my mood if I've had a bad day. Being a busy mum of 2 (3 if you count the husband!), working full time and studying full time, I can always fit a 31 minute session in (sometimes 2!) each day. The best part is the results just keep on coming after almost 2 years training with Core9 - no two days are ever the same and they constantly keep you on your toes. I am truly blessed to have found Core9 - they are number 1 in my books and I will be forever grateful to them for how they have changed mine, and my families, lives!

From the owner: Core9 is not just an out of the box gym or health club but is in itself a fitness regime combining…read moreGymnastics exercises, Kick-Boxing fundamentals and Military training techniques. In the five or so years since I was last a member it seems they've scrubbed up and pulled their socks up. You can have as much or as little guidance as you like and classes like boxing, body balance (a lot of Les Mills) and more should keep boredom at bay.

The reception staff always offer perky greetings and on Fridays, a bowl of fresh fruit for those post-workout munchies. Having never braved a personal training session of fear I may in fact hyperventilate, pass out, or worse, embarrass myself in front of the muscley trainers, there are plenty of them, and friends rave about how good their sessions are. Good for them. Personally, I'm a massive fan of gym classes - the RPM instructors are packed with ridiculous amounts of energy, and motivate you to the point where you think your lungs are actually going to explode out of your chest. They introduce themselves to each individual rider every session - and if you're a regular, watch out because they will shout out your name if you aren't keeping up! Despite being an Australia-wide chain, this particular Fitness First really adds a personal touch to their operations, and as a result, is always buzzing with fitness freaks and health-seekers. They also offer a child-minding service, complete with a large playroom which is supervised by the staff.

But I am trying, I'm trying hard to make fitness a thing that is an active (get it) part of my life, rather than something I scoff and try to avoid. I went to Barre Body with a colleague of mine when they were in town. She's pretty into her fitness and I agreed to go with her. Colleague solidarity and all.... OK, so I sound super pessimistic, when in fact, it was great. I really enjoyed it. It's a beautiful, calm space. We were two of four taking part in the class so I didn't feel silly for totally not being able to do certain things. The class was hard and involved a variety of resistance, stretching and strength based movements. There were also heaps of options for you to up it or pull it down dependant on your ability, which I think for this kind of fitness. From simple stretches to balancing, to weights to pull ups from the floor (haha - no), I loved the mix of the ballet/pilates/yoga style movements. There were points where I was laughing, mainly because I don't have the ability to do something yet, but I didn't feel like I was putting people off, I felt really supported, especially by the instructor. I will be trying it again (shock horror, I know) and hopefully, I will be in less pain for less time here therein. Seeing I felt damn good afterwards and that out wayed the muscle pain I felt over the following days, I feel I owe it to myself (and the studio) to give it another go.

I've been to dozens of their classes in Melbourne and a few in Sydney so it was great to see them also offering classes in Brisbane during a recent work trip. As is the case in all of their other studios, the design is lovely with lots of light and nice touches like freshly brewed tea and scented candles. The teachers are friendly and make newbies feel welcome while also challenging those who come regularly. Book classes on line and on their app - it's super easy.

Upon entering the Pure Health Club you may notice a large manifesto posted on the wall stipulating that this "health club" (not gym) endeavors to make your work-out is a positive, fun, experience and insists that members leave their ego, vanity, pretentiousness and general gym-like attitudes at the door. The gym itself isn't like those chic, stainless steel 'exercise domes' so many of us have become accustomed to. Rather, the walls are bare, there are virtually no mirrors and there is a distinct absence of bulky machines that no one understands or uses. Instead the gym is filled with reasonably attractive everyday people with smiles on their faces, working-off that cheeseburger which they don't really feel that guilty about eating. Upon my sisters advice I attended the "Bounce" class. "Bounce" is a cardio class in which all members are asked to perform a series of aerobic like moves atop of miniature trampolines. Twenty minutes into the class I was puffing, drenched in sweat and cautious about not falling off my trampoline for the third time - but unlike most exercise classes I've been to, I was enjoying myself! At times I found myself making eye contact with other strangers in the class, sharing a look that clearly said, 'don't we look stupid', before mutually jumping harder once the track changed to the 'Venga Boys'. The PURE Health Club is definitely unlike other gyms. Even as a visitor to the club I was under not pressure to join or sign on to some discretely expensive trial program. I simply came in, tried it out and left without a fuss. Will I join the club anytime soon? Not sure. Do I want to return to the PURE Health Club? Without a doubt. IMPORTANT! Unfortunately they're closed on weekends - but how many "Health Clubs" have trampolines? Seriously.

There is a good variety of classes, and some classes you won't find at other gyms, however the city gym is a little tired and rundown and could use refreshing. The Coorparoo and Newstead studios are essentially brand spanking new, which may make the city seem a little shabby in comparison. I suggest popping in and picking up a free class pass, or one of the 5 days for $5 passes when they have that promotion running to see if the gym is the right fit for you because I don't think it's for everyone. There isn't a huge variety or amount of equipment (6 treadmills, 3 of which I wouldn't run on because the mats slip, only a handful of bikes, and not much in the way of weights) so it's probably not going to suit macho weight lifting men or cardio addicts who don't like classes and can only attend in peak periods. If you like variety of classes especially pilates (both mat-work and reformer) and trying new things like bounce class (jumping on mini trampolines, harder than it sounds) or hiphop, or a new class that's coming soon that involves hula-hooping, then Pure may just be the right fit. They also offer Pilates training accreditation, regularly run 10 week challenges, have some great personal trainers, and run a clean eating program, which seems to be popular.
