We had just arrived in Mexico City and were a little culture shocked by the immensity of the city, and as ignorant Americans who speak little to no Spanish, it was nice to check in to a friendly, clean hostel with English speakers to get grounded before exploring the city. If staying in the D.F. this hostel is very centrally located. We did take the metro throughout the day and this place is located close to two metro stops. There is always a bilingual (English and Spanish speaking, I think) staff member at the front desk at all hours to answer any questions. Several times we asked for directions or about taking a bus or metro and were given great advice. The hostel is super clean and friendly. Our shared room was small, but brightly painted and clean. We did have a locker in the room and we travel with our own lock, so we felt safe locking our valuables up when out of the room. If you don't travel with your own lock, locks can be purchased at the front desk. At 2:00 PM, which is check in time, there was a long line of backpackers and travelers trying to get a room and a lot of them were turned down due to no vacancy, so definitely make your reservations online before coming, especially if you're planning to stay on a weekend. We made ours on Hostel World and had no issues with the reservations. There is a bar upstairs and free WiFi throughout the entire hostel, as well as a restaurant downstairs. The restaurant downstairs does serve really good food, and while it is more pricey than other places, it's convenient to grab a snack or drink. The free breakfast provided upstairs was fresh and hearty with lots of fruit. There is free coffee provided, but it's the instant kind. Another huge plus to this hostel was the free filtered water which is available on every floor in a drinking fountain. We refilled all of our water bottles and didn't have to buy any water while in Mexico City. The water fountains on the bottommost floors have the coldest water. There were some loud, obnoxious juveniles in the hostel, so if you want to get a good night's sleep definitely bring ear plugs, as a lot of the rooms open up to the restaurant and lobby downstairs and voices travel far in this hostel. The showers and bathrooms were clean and we were even provided with towels and soap, which is a plus for hostels. The same people who run this hostel also have others throughout Mexico, so it looks like a nice, trusty chain of hostels to me.

The rooftop and activities also facilitate the encounters. You can book most city activities through the hostel if you want to do them in a group. They have activities every day. The rooms are cleanish, there's a weird lingering pipe smell but I feel that's pretty common in older buildings. I took off one start because it can be suppeerrr loud, this messed up my sleep for a bit of my stay. It's more due to the location of it being in Centro.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are clean and functional, and the murals are impressive. My three girlfriends and I shared the large, "yellow" room with private bath for 2 nights. It overlooked the courtyard out back and the beds were fairly comfortable. The bathroom was surprisingly elegant with large mirrors and a deep bathtub. We stayed our last night in the "pink" room with a shared bath, which had two queen-size beds and a bunk bed. While it wasn't as nice as the yellow room (obnoxious lighting), it was a bit quieter at night... A group of rowdy boys partied into the early morning in the courtyard for two of our 3 nights, which could be heard clearly through the thin windows in the yellow room. The noise was nothing a white noise phone app couldn't fix. Breakfast was fabulous each morning, with fresh coffee and full meals, fruit and all. It's served every morning from 9-10, and fills you up. They happily cater to vegetarians. The family who runs the place is really great, and there was usually someone who spoke English in the office/front room at all times, 24/7. They are family friendly (offering PacNPlays), and have a dog named Soy who hangs out. They offer travel advice, will reserve taxis, loan out travel books, hand out maps, etc. I can't wait to return and bring my family next time. The only thing that wasn't too comfortable was the noise at night... But this city likes to have fun, and it is a hostel after all. I love you Dos Fridas!!!

We stayed here again for the 2nd time during New Years Eve weekend. Had a private room for 4 people…read more(twin bunk beds and 2 twin beds) and ensuite private bathroom. Staff is nice and friendly (although not as social as the ones before when we stayed here) but they were still helpful. The old ladies that work here cleaning and cooking are all so nice and amazing. They don't talk to you much because...well, they're working and they only speak spanish. The hostel is very clean, light and simple breakfast is included and made to order. If the breakfast doesn't fill you up, walk just a couple yards away to one of the street food vendors and grab some delicious and cheap tacos, tortas, chilaquiles. I wish they had a bigger community area because seating is very limited but that's not a huge issue. This is a social hostel and noise travels throughout the building, so just be aware of that! It's walkable to many places including the park, bars and museum but you can also take a cheap Uber ride just about anywhere!

Some folks in other reviews complained about the lack of A/C, however I never once saw it an issue. Mexico City has very nice weather, never above 32C (90F) even in the summer, and its relativity dry, so the rooms are always at least tranquil. My advice for those who complain about no A/C, you probably shouldn't be staying on a hostel. The location is great, it's not too close to the touristy Centro, however still in the middle of the city, and two blocks away from the Hildago subway station. The staff are all really nice and speak great English, which seems to be the international baseline language. The only knock I have on Hostel DF is that terrible wifi and the lack of daily events to bring the hostel together. More good than bad here, id stay again.

We loved the neighborhood, San Rafael, for its authenticity, history, food, and proximity to a lot of other things on our itinerary. Right upon arrival, we were greeted by incredible architectural and design details, an amazing staff, and the most adorable dog, Bonito. Axel and Elvia and were attentive and didn't mind our millions of questions or requests (including using their laundry service or where to get the best tacos within walking distance!). Our room was cozy and calming resulting in restful sleep, and the fresh fruit and delicious Mexican breakfast in the mornings by Nora and Lupita was the absolute best way to start our day. Finally, housekeeping made it so we'd always return to an inviting and tidy room every evening with a fresh jug of water. I was drawn to El Patio 77 for its charm and pledge to sustainability, and it did not disappoint. A few things to note (which didn't hinder our experience whatsoever, but might be useful for other travelers): Location: El Patio 77 is located in the charming and quiet neighborhood of San Rafael, but a lot of our planned activities were in Roma Norte or Condesa. We knew this at the time of booking, and were excited to be a little further away from the city center. This did mean about a 20-40 minute Uber ride most of the time (depending on traffic), or a long meandering walk. My partner and I both love walking and felt pretty safe in the area, so this was not a problem for us. I encourage visitors to spend some time in the neighborhood and check out local shops and restaurants. Rooms: It's an old home with lots of quirks, which means you may hear movement throughout the house. We stayed in the Veracruz room which we loved and got great sleep in, but it did get a little warm at night. There was a fan in the room which helped tremendously, and we'd wake up to the smell of coffee and breakfast cooking on the nights we kept the window open (this was an incredible way to wake up). Bathroom: In our room, and I imagine in others as well, there was no door to the bathroom, only a doorway. It's not so different than most hotel rooms these days, but if you are planning on sharing the room with someone and aren't comfortable with the bathroom arrangement, this is something to note. Luckily the property is absolutely beautiful with a number of calm corners where, if someone needs privacy, the other person can go and read a book, work on their laptop, etc. All in all, we loved our time here and look forward to returning to CDMX and staying at El Patio 77 once again! My room was not what I reserved, it had no window as promised. It was hot and there was no ventilation (even though it was gorgeous outside), I had to leave my door propped open to breathe. My bedding was dirty and had obviously not been changed after the previous guest, nor was it changed in the five days I was there. When I mentioned it to the staff I was told it was ok...lol! There was absolutely no hot, or even warm, water. The towel they gave me smelt like dirty feet (thankfully I always travel with my own). The free breakfast is three blocks away. With the exception of a couple of people, the staff were generally rude, especially this little skinny queen with glasses. I could've gotten better accomodations at a side alley bathhouse. To top things off, the only interesting person I met,who seemed to be the only other guest, was the resident drug dealer!

I had a room facing the street on the second level, and I do admit that at times the noise did get bothersome, but I was offered a change of room if I found it to much so. I liked the view, so I stayed there. (Not much of a "view" but it was fun to look over the street.) There is food everywhere, and a little spot directly across the street that sells deep fried quesadilla all night. Great drunk food!! Hostal Regina was fantastic!
