Well, almost, there's so much light pollution around Melbourne, it usually seems like 24 hours daylight. Never mind. Railway Hotel south Melbourne has James squire tap beer, coopers, trumer pils and coldstream cider. What's not to like? Plus it hosts ample room for dinner; either solo or with companion, an open fire place, a large space for groups or large bookings, and daily specials throughout the week. Monday, or should that be Mondayne is pie night, Sunday is roast night and so on. Now, these are always a winner in my book. No doubt most people will agree. A mildly tiki back yard/ beer garden out the back; makes the railway a great space in summer to enjoy the sun under the dappled sunlight, or in it's full glory. It's also warm and toasty in the winter, so really one can come here any-time of the year. Thursday hosts live acoustic music, and there's a pool table out back. Brilliant! It's a very old pub, and still has it's 1930's vibe to it. It's appeared in film and TV. While it still remains a pub, the food is up there with the better examples. It hasn't renovated itself to be all swish and swank, but it doesn't need to. One could do far worse in terms of pub choices. It's not trying to be a gastro- pub. It retains it's original charm. It's what Hipsters might call vintage, but I haven't seen too many hanging about this place. There's a variety of things on here, so you should be able to find something you like. The back room even has it's own bar. Drink specials are common here, and there is an odd display box thing at random points around the bar. Candles are also scattered about the place, and that's always good, did I mention the open fire? I saw the cat :) it was by the fire!

Online we found the Sip and Sushi offer for $65 per head which presented bottomless drinks and sushi. Upon arrival we were greatly deceived. The waitress almost flat-out refused to serve us despite taking a $60 online booking fee ($30pp), claiming this offer doesn't exist anymore despite being present on their website and all over restaurant apps, websites and Tik Tok's. They "catered to us" by offering us the "Sip & Saviche" package assuring us a similar experience. We were treated to 4 small appetiser plates consisting of; 4x Goyza dumplings, 2x bread crumbed crochets, 150g crabbed fish and one fish fillet with a pancake. Granted we did enjoy the bottomless drink experience (with slow service), ultimately the combined price was $165 as opposed to $130, furthermore we were cutoff drinks at an 100mins as opposed to 120mins. We ended up getting more food as we left hungry. Overpriced and underfed...

We chose to be seated in the front area of the restaurant so we could do a bit of people watching. The seating is comfortable, table set perfect and had great pieces of retro art to look at on the walls around us, although in my opinion didn't suit the level of sophistication we experienced in the menu. Our waiter, was very professional, throughly explained every dish on the menu and speaking of menus, its set out like a mind map. For instance I chose the New Zealand Salmon - lets call this the 'frontal cortex', this was with Beetroot Miso - lets call this the 'emotion', then Corn puffs - another 'emotion' & Celeriac - the last 'emotion'. My Partner had the Ottway Crispy Pork - 'frontal cortex' with Black Sausage, French Onion Consumme & Compressed Apple as the 'emotions. Then came the showstopper side of Truffle Mac & Cheese! Unbelievable to put it simply. I want it, I want it every day of my life! We then chose to share our desert 'My Strawberries & Cream' - Musk, Cream Catalana Meringue. This was an experience. Every part of the desert mouthful was a surprise. You could even say it was molecular gastronomy. Micro mint, Popping Candy, Strawberry Toffee and fresh strawberries. The food was absolutely the best I have experienced this year - all 4 days of it thus far.... I highly recommend that you experience the food created by Matthew Butcher here at Morris Jones. Motel although a busy nightclub also has the appeal of a relaxed bar, the venue is spread across two levels upstairs being the most iconic; a huge open deck area where guests can dance the night away under the stars. I have been to Motel a handful of times and it always proves to be a great night out, they regularly host festival after parties as well as Spring Racing Carnival pre parties. If you are heading there on a busy night out make sure you get in early, as the door policy can be a bit tight so best to dress your best and bring your girlfriends!

Okay, they only have benches out of the road, but the atmosphere inside is quite cool. In fact it is generally not all that crowded, which is what I like about some of these bars, especially the ones that haven't appeared on people's radars yet. Very friendly staff who clearly knew there trade and were happy to talk and recommend cocktails etc. The Paloma (tequila with sparling pink grapefruit) was amazing. If you are a whiskey drinker there is in excess of 100 to try!!! There is a balcony so on a warm night great to sit outside with views of the river and city. Definitely worth a visit.

Here is the icing on the cake, one of our tables of 10 had a table of 12 empty in front of them for the whole night! No one came and sat at that table! We were all shocked! I'm very disappointed in the way the restaurant was not accommodating to our 2 groups. I will NEVER go to eat at Mr McCracken again and will let all my friends and family know about this horrible unaccommodating restaurant. Customer service score is zero!
