A very nice Marina!! I came here to visit my friend who has a boat here. It seemed quiet enough to me, nobody was really here that day. Plenty of parking, and it was pretty easy getting the boat out and later back docked. Seemed like a nice Marina to me!! read more

We put a deposit on a slip a few days ago. We were then given a copy of the rules and regs to read over. That is when I realized we would NOT be able to live up to the "no more than 14 nonconsecutive days on your boat" stipulation. We spend a lot of time on our boat especially in the summer so that would not have worked for us. Plus a substantial fine if not adhered to. I emailed the manager, Sheila, WITHIN 48 hours that we would have to cancel for that reason, only to find out our $560 deposit would not be refunded!!! Not even in part! I emailed her back stating that NOWHERE was this posted or made known which Sheila never even bothered to respond to. This is a policy most businesses adhere to as a common curtesy to customers. But not Shyster Sheila at the TYEE!!! And the marina is not even that nice...for sure. Barely adequate is about it with no shore facilities to offer. read more

This marina is not secure by any means. There is not adequate lighting or any type of video surveillance. I had my work vehicle broken into here and the staff basically acts like it's not their problem. As far as I can tell, the only two cameras they do have are not even properly functioning, nor will the staff review the footage or help with anything. I recommend going to any of the other marinas in Tacoma. BE AWARE! read more

A beautiful place to learn how to sail! I took sailing lessons from the local boat rental shop here and enjoyed every minute of it! It's located in a quiet, convienient place. Sailing out of here is the perfect remedy for the Sunday blues or a great weekday evening wind-down activity. read more

I am very mixed about this Marina. I keep my boat down at Tyee4. I love it. Its quiet, and well maintained. Pebble beach is an awesome beach for the kids to play on. Its never that crowded, Plenty of water at low tide. My gripes. Well bathrooms. Theres just some porta johns. I would like to see some built in with showers... Also, theres no convenience store so if you forget ice you got to go back up the hill to get some ice. But over all its very clean, quiet, and you can be sailing within minutes.... If there was toilets or a little store I would have given it a 4 stars and if it had both I would have given 5 stars. read more

You will enjoy mooring at Tyee Marina if you can tolerate the following: - mooring with Hillbillies. - dangerous wooden docks in several areas, especially on Tyee 1. - break-water entrances constructed of old steel ships that significantly move around in storms, which makes it difficult and/or dangerous to enter and exit the marina. In the past, the old ships at Tyee 1 have smashed into numerous tenant vessels and at Tyee 4 it is very difficult to enter at low tide on any given day. - gross bathrooms that even men often don't want to use. - numerous low-end "liveaboards", despite having an "official rule" against the practice. - selective rule enforcement due to nepotism. - an owner / manager with a "holier-than-thou" attitude towards his tenants. - turning a blind eye when some tenants conduct major in-water vessel restorations of very old boats - at times, EPA Regulations are not even followed. - low security, despite a "so-called" security guard that lives at the marina. The only time there is resonable security enforcement is on July 4th to keep control of the large crowds that gather at the Marina to watch the fireworks. If you have a small outboard on your dingy it probably won't last long unless you chain it up or take it home! - poor maintenance overall. - "Waterworld" - basically, mooring at Tyee is like being a character in the movie Waterworld (1995). NOTE: I agree that the sailing school (Puget Sound Sailing Institute) located near Tyee Marina is outstanding and provides a quality sailing experience, but this is not the experience you will have when long-term mooring at Tyee. Tyee is best used as a temporary location for your vessel until you can find something better. read more

I have kept my sail boat at this marina for 5 years, and never had an issue how the people run it. They are very easy going people to talk to, and they do a great job keeping the place clean. I have never been a big fan of wood docks because of getting splinters so I'm glad they have cement docks. Also, they are sturdier for me to walk on. This marina has two rooms that has showers in them so after a long day in the sun sweating I'm glad that I can take a shower. read more

The guy next to me had to leave his slip because the dock he was at was falling apart he said.... The closest pump-out to me has not worked the last four times I tried it. So I have to go out of the marina and go to the next one. I got to the Pump-out and part of the bumper on the dock was falling into the water.... As I got to the entrance that I normally take the other night I noticed the lights were not working. This make it difficult getting into the marina with the rain and a few small logs in the water. They don't keep up this marina. The docks are in need of repair. Last month part of the breakwater sank. They use old rotting ships as breakwaters. This place is really turning into a dump. Not sure if I want to go to Tyee marina next year. read more

I have moored at many marinas the last 35 years of my boating years and I have found this one to be one of the best from Seattle south. I have been here now for over 10 years and have a great time each time I come down, which is near every other day! Previous to mooring here, I was at a marina in the Thea Foss Waterway for 9 years and, even today, is not a very secure area. With the dirty liveaboards (vessels run down/ no motors/ no holding tanks), homeless people, occasional gun shots, loud trains and traffic, and more, I was glad to leave. Tyee Marina is much quieter. I found the tenants here at Tyee Marina to be a nice group by the most part. There are not any liveaboard (unless they are secretly there or in the middle of house moves), although some vacationers nest in for a short time. Most of the vessels are of clean usable condition and each tenant must provide proof of insurance before mooring here. (This keeps out the run down/rotted vessels.) I see very little in vessel rebuilding other than the normal upkeep, unlike I have seen at other marinas. If there is a complaint towards a moorage customer or vessel, the marina staff doesn't just look the other way, but checks out the problem and addresses it. The marina has new cement docks and wiring. There are some of the old wood docks still in play but are study. The marina will be replacing them too, it is ongoing each year. The breakwater is the best you can hope for. The breakwater is the old I-90 Bridge from Seattle and it keeps the waves down much better than the old stuff. The breakwater and the docks in that location are in 65 feet of water. I have been down there on nights of big winds and found that I was not the only one cruising the dock. I found the marina crew checking lines and boats. What amazed me is how the marina rode out nicely with the waves just slamming into the breakwater. I have only seen an issue with the west entrance due to the Foss Barge line moving on extreme tide changes or big wind. I understand that Foss is making repairs to that issue but is not normally a problem for most vessels coming and going. There has been no issues with the east entrance. There is always water, even on the lowest tide, at both entrances. The moorage to the shore side is shallower and the turn on Tyee 1(at the shore side) but not normally an issue unless very low tides. The entrance to both sides are over 50-feet deep. It is not advisable to try to enter from the north shore side as it get shallow. It is not an entrance anyhow but some people like to chance it. Instead of the 15 to 20 minute run to get to open water when moored in the other marinas, here the open water is just outside the entrance. For those who have taller / bigger vessels, the view is the best. What a way to enjoy a sunset! Security is pretty good. There is a security guard. There is also the marina crew that keeps a look out while working the docks. There are also several other security persons that help at night. MUCH better than most marinas! Location is a plus. Just up the hill is the Cliff House Restaurant, soon to reopen I understand. The small Brown's Point community of stores on the top is a great for the necessary hardware you may need or supplies. Going toward the south, only 5 minutes is Fred Myers, Winco Food, Safeway, many gas stations, and much more of the Federal Way area. There is Seaward Canvas at the entrance of the marina for those needing sail work or such. There is a sailing school. There is a brokerage for new and used vessels. There is a boat manufacturer/haul-out facility just before the entrance. All in all, a very good place to moore and enjoy your vessel. I give it a a good rating overall. read more
