It simply said, "This is gorgeous!!" Well, I take that back- I knew before then. I had worked with them for many events previously when working for a former employer planning their large fundraising galas. In that role I used them for at least 5 of our large galas and was always impressed. It was Davenport Designs' professionalism, ease to work with and extreme talent that made them my first choice for doing the flowers for my big day. However, I must admit that they did far exceed my already high expectations of them. Having an arts background, visuals are very important to me and to nobody's surprise I had a definite vision for the ceremony and reception decor. The look combined elements of both a woodland and vintage design theme (which prompted a look of doubt from my then-fiancé). Their execution was elegant, creative and nothing short of breathtaking. This wasn't your typical vase of flowers at the center of each table like most wedding receptions. These were a work of art. No?…read more Well, mosey on down to Elmhurst's Topiary and catch shop owner Silvia hard at work crafting floral arrangements fit for a Tim Burton flick, but sans silver scissor hands. Indie, imaginative, and my newest obsession. Okay, I haven't yet purchased a topiary, as I'd already blown my Mother's Day wad at Enzee just up and around the corner, but that's not to say I won't be back for one the next time I have a need for for ivy turned into an iguana or maybe a fern in the shape of a ferret... the possibilities are endless. On my latest visits, Silvia's had the shop stocked with bears, pups, dragonflies and more, but my real draw, and also where the last few miniscule bits of money I had went, is the greeting card selection. Sounds silly? Yes, I know... but you didn't see the cards. Or the matching mugs. The cards are photos of animals, but made to look like famous people. Like, the John Wake Great Dane, the Siamese Amy Winehouse, the Kim Jong Il Pug... too soon? I think not. Too funny? I'll take two! To date, I've purchased 6 cards from Topiary. That's starting back from my first visit 2 weeks ago, until now and I know I'll be back because Silvia showed me the catalog and let me hand pick which famous furred faces she should get in the shop for next time. I was a little nervous working with someone who didn't have a physical shop to visit, but my MIL's friend had worked with her before and said she was great. Meeting Candy for my consultation put me at complete ease. She was so knowledgeable and really paid attention to what I wanted and what was important to me. I wanted something classy but not cliche. I told her my colors, that I loved calla lilies, and that the theme was classic vintage. I was a little anxious not seeing my flowers until the day of the wedding, but Candy understood my vision perfectly and they were EXACTLY what I wanted. She also put together a matching bouquet for my 5 year old daughter with the same flowers, just different colors (mine were red, hers were white).
