Travelodge Hotel - Caerphilly

In town for the Cheese festival, the Travelodge website gave me a solid deal for two nights but…read moreonly because I planned 8 weeks in advance. If you're looking for a last minute cheap room, you're not going to find it here. Their prices only go up and up and up. Internet is not free, but my WWAN dongle had a full 3G signal. It's a very new property. So new that the most recent Google image still shows dirt as I write this in July 2011. There is a Lidl next door and the shopping centre ("center" in American) across the roundabout has a nice pub, a chippie, a Chinese take-away and a Tesco Express. It's about a one mile walk to the Festival grounds down Nantgarw Road, which takes you just past Aber Rail station. I wouldn't want to walk it at night, but in the daytime it was fine. There are about 50 rooms in the hotel on three floors. My room was on the top floor (the penthouse - wa-hey!) and at the end of the corridor. Even still, there was the occasional slammed door from one of the other rooms. No other hallway noise or neighbor could be heard. The bed was a little on the soft side, but still comfortable. The duvet was similarly comfortable and I was glad for the three pillows. Quite lacking in other accoutrements. The only other things not nailed down was the chair and the bin. A small coffee and tea service was most welcome. The work desk area was large and there was a small closet area with hangars and two small shelves. It was a good room and if I come back to Caerphilly, I would stay here again.

If you're looking for a beautifully stunning location, a cosy atmosphere and great food, Manor Parc…read morehas all three in abundance. It's Orangerie Restaurant is great for a special meal such as an anniversary or birthday and they also put on a top class sunday lunch every week for hotel guests and visitors alike. They're a family run business, which comes across with the friendly atmosphere and great personal service. The Hotel has 21 en-suite rooms and caters for weddings and conferences. Located in the north of Cardiff, near Caerphilly Mountain, means you feel out of the city but are close enough to take a shopping trip into Cardiff's centre. (You can follow the road the Hotel is on all the way to the centre, allow 25 - 35 mins depending on traffic). It was also used as the setting for the wedding between Gavin and Stacy in the hit comedy series "Gavin and Stacy". Which i think is as good a recommendation as any.

I love this place, I have been here quiet often either for wedding receptions or for a meal with the company, as whole, who I do volunteer work with every now and then. The meal we have there is always different and it is always wonderfully tasteful as was the food for the wedding receptions. It has a bar; a comfortable sitting room area, an eating room area, a area where you would have the meal for your wedding reception or perhaps for even a party or for some work due, wonderful grounds to walk around and look out to the countryside view in front of you, lush bedrooms to sleep and wash in, and some toilets. They have thirty seven bedrooms and they are ten minutes away from Cardiff's city centre. This place has free internet and there is free guest parking. No pets are allowed. I recommend this place to all...

The facilities are clean, the staff helpful, and the pool is truly nice. They have a lot of good classes, which, sadly, are often so booked up with eager yoga-ists, Pilates-fans and Zumba- enthusiasts that we stretch, strain and Zumba into our nearest neighbour. Luckily all with good grace and a smile and, as far as I know, no major fallings-out or injuries. The latest offerings are as diverse as walking clubs, wine tasting and poker (obviously the whole health thing might be slipping a tad). There are a number of membership options starting from around £40 per month, which if I go three times a week works out at cheaper than attending classes elsewhere. Then, I can destroy all my good work by wandering into the café or bar afterwards.

A member of staff booked us in for 20:30 and when we arrived there was no booking for us. When we were able to sit down we had a helpful member of staff (Tracey) come over to us and order our drinks swiftly. After they arrived we were made to wait far too long to place a food order. 20mins after ordering we were told that various orders we had made were not available. One of our dinner guests had their food given to them whilst everyone else had to watch them eat..waiting for theirs. Food eventually came out after over an hour of waiting by which time it was far too late so we left. Manager did not even attempt to speak to us to apologise. AVOID.

There is a car park out the back, but this is quite small and gets full very quickly at lunch times, especially on a Friday. There are two rooms downstairs; a bar out the back with a decked and covered outdoor area (built since the smoking ban) and the restaurant part at the front. Locals tend to go out the back and people ho work close by stay in the front part. The meals are cheap and filling and served quickly. If you're after a bite to eat at lunch time and want something cheap and cheerful, then this would fit the bill. The lasagne is good, but you can't go wrong with ham egg and chips in here! Oh, and a pint of course!
