If you're searching for the quirky, the ordinary, or a gift in general, then CC Legends is a…read moremust-stop spot in Red Lodge. Don't make the mistake of thinking its an ordinary place, because you'll be missing out. It's probably classified as a tourist stop -- and it is -- but it's a good place to explore, pick up a few souvenirs and kitschy mementos, but it's also a great place to meet the resident canine mascot, listen to the owner tell his maybe not-so-tall-tales, and hear a lot of behind-the-scenes discussions of local affairs. However, if you do need to a treat, a greeting card, or a hat or t-shirt (with or without a slogan), or some shoes, and you're still working your way through all the unique shops along main street and don't want to leave the area, then C.C. Legends can help you out.

I'm not sure what I enjoyed most about this place: it's hole-in-the-wall location; the raconteur…read moreowner, or the variety of treasures or not-treasures here. The large well-worn wooden doors in the sandstone brick is enticing but might be, for some, sketchy. There's a large sign on the door but no other markings. When I walked in, I was expecting a small space, but to my surprise, the building is far larger than it appears -- like a Tardis, I suppose. Things are sorted -- kind of: the kitchen things are in one spot, the glassware dining and living room accoutrements in another, and then a middle room with old clothing, spurs, saddles, chaps, and the back room with toys, books, vinyl, pictures, tools, knives, and other general things. The owner, a spry older man, tells everyone to come in and browse. If he's not helping a customer, or haggling over pricing, he's quietly sitting in the front reading. There's no air conditioning or water as he explains why he's not open in the winter. It's an old building that in the heat of summer stays cool inside. Owing to his health issues this might be his last year and he'll close when it gets too cold outside. But then again, maybe he won't. He hasn't decided. But for now, make him an offer on whatever you find and he'll work with it. Many of things he has accumulated he found from various road trips in the Dakotas, Wyoming, Nebraska and points west. When he mentioned his age and how long he's had this shop, I suddenly felt as though I have accomplished nothing at a much younger age. What a life he's had. Two visits to this shop already -- not because I need or want anything, but because I enjoy the adventure of the search and the stories. With that said, I did find a couple original craftsman screwdrivers to replace some I lost. I have to work on my haggling skills, though.

It's a colorful shop with the bright colors of some leather pieces and I wasn't really expecting that. In speaking with the person working that day, it seems the owner made all the leather pieces and has been doing so for 20-30 years. She does, from time to time create custom pieces. There were some gorgeous leather bags and belts and it was difficult to not splurge beyond my budget that day. So maybe to my friends who want to get me a gift just because . . .

Local supplies, and musical instruments! What a mix! This…read moreplace is probably one of the better places to go for local supplies or things to take home to remind you of your trip to Red Lodge. They have all the huckleberry jams, candies, wine, beer, etc. that you could ever ask for. They sell postcards, patches that depict the state of Montana. They also have rather healthful foods here- granola bars, pancake mixes. The other side of the shop is all musical instruments! They have everything from mandolins to guitars, bass, and even a trumpet! They sell guitar strings, amp wires, capos, anything you need for your musical needs. I think they even had the sheet music to Merle Haggard's "Big City" about getting dropped off in the middle of Montana. The clerk was pleasant, but minded her own business as I poked around and weighed the different huckleberry options. It seems that when things get cold in this town, a hot jam (whether musical or huckleberry) will always spice things up! Parking was a bit challenging, this place is located on the main strip of Red Lodge, so it's only street-side parallel parking. The shop was ADA accessible, but had some narrow aisles.
