What a place. I…read morefound myself on a mini creative sabbatical in CDMX, staying on Chapultepec and Insurgentes, right on the Roma Nte / Juarez border. This meant that if I wanted late night vibes, I was going to walk into Juarez. And more often than not, I'd find myself at Cicatriz, chatting with Dan behind the bar. Dan is the man -- chill vibes, always down to chat, and you wouldn't know it, but he's also a very talented skate photographer. I'd usually start with a Yoko, which is their take on an Aperol Spritz -- with Mezcal. Amazing. They have a fantastic selection of artisanal mezcals as well--served with oranges and sal gusano--and there's always a can of beer on the cheap to go with it. A few times they had cute female vinyl DJs spinning Italo Disco. I went to Cicatriz more than any other place in the two weeks I spent in Mexico City. It became a comfortable desintation. The Avena is delicious in the morning and their coffee is bomb. The Sandwich de Pollo Frito will raise your spirits and lunch or dinner time and the Tostada de Ricotta was satisfying too. And being on Glorieta Plaza Washington, you can watch an abundance of humanity moving through the city as you chill and enjoy the scene. All in all, Cicatriz gets my highest recommendation. Thanks Dan and crew...you made my stay awesome.

I came in here twice for breakfast because the hostel's free breakfast consisted of all carbs and no protein :( I'm a bodybuilder...I need my protein!!! For 36 pesos (approx $3), you can order a 2 egg omelet with choice of 1 mix in (i always got the spinach) or you can add more for additional charge. It also comes with a piece of toast. The omelet already comes topped with tomato slices and avocados too! Seriously, you can't beat this perfect protein-filled breakfast at this great price! There's just one lady that works here and makes all the food, so please be patient with her. She has to cook and prepare all orders in this tiny little kitchen behind the counter. They offer a variety of other items such as drinks, desserts and sandwiches too. Their coffee isn't bad either, they grind the beans and brew each coffee to order. Wonderful place, a real hidden gem. NOTE: they close on Sundays!

The menu board didn't list the price if the hot chocolates. He said the Chocolate was 95 pesos ($5). But the water was 179 ($9.25). He said it was imported mineral water and very good for health. I asked if the bottle was included and he said no because it was reusable. He poured the remaining water into a plastic cup. Hmm... ask all prices, and know what youre paying before ordering in this place.

This is my second time visiting Mexico City and while I don't speak the language fluently, I do…read moreknow common phrases and I'm sure to be respectful and polite. With that said, I can say that this visit was underwhelming and the service was the reason. My partner and I's hotel was right across the street and we figured we'd stop in for a nice cup of coffee. We arrived around noon and there weren't many people there at all. There was a family of about five and maybe two or three other people that had all ordered. When my partner approached the counter, she asked for two café lattes. The woman who took her order, did not speak much English at all. However, this was fine because her coworker who was right beside her did speak English and reiterated the order that my partner had requested. Language barrier, no problem and understandable. But the problem that I have is that we sat there for about 20 minutes and watched other people come in, order and receive their orders in minutes. So of course, as we're seeing people come in and out with their orders completed (and we're still sitting there), we're wondering what's going on. As such, my partner went to the counter to inquire about where the lattes were. And when she did, there was no reason given as to why we didn't receive the lattes. Instead, we got handed two shots of espresso. We didn't order that. And what made it worse is that when my partner approached the counter, the same worker who knew fluent English and explained it to his coworker earlier, still handed my partner to espresso knowing she didn't order that. It's like he couldn't be bothered to actually give us what we ordered. I'm not sure how to café lattes turned into two espressos, especially when you know English, and you repeated it back to the original woman who took the order. Not only that, to hand us two espressos, which absolutely don't take 20 to 25 minutes to make makes even less sense. Not only did you disregard our original order, it appeared that you were never going to service us at all. Had my partner not gone back to the counter to inquire, we wouldn't even gotten shots of espressos; that we never asked for. Out of all the businesses that I have patronized, knowing little Spanish and being totally respectful, this service was poor. Based on that, when back in Mexico City, we won't be coming back or recommending this place.
