Location: located in Azusa in the San Gabriel Mountains off of Shoemaker canyon road. Can't stress enough to have directions printed and meet with anyone before going up the mountain because there is ABSOLUTE NO SERVICE! And you won't get any until you are all the way at the bottom, boo!!! So plan to prepare or plan to fail! Hike: there is no designated parking or a parking lot so I recommend once you turn left on shoemaker canyon go all the way down to the yellow fire gate and park by the gate. The entrance to the hike is behind the gate. The hike is about 3.5 miles one way so about 7 miles roundtrip, my Fitbit stated 15,000 steps at completion. The hike itself is moderate. Not easy but definitely a good way to get that heart rate pumping without dying. The tunnels are Huge and are eerily dark and long. I would love to read the history behind the tunnels because I was told there was some interesting history behind the tunnels. Once you go through the tunnels there are some promising views. Loved the outlook of the mountains and the water streams below. It was truly beautiful! Overall, great hike and definitely recommend! read more

Have been here a few times and the tunnels are really cool. Second tunnel is unfinished but it is very similar to the first tunnel, except it is just missing the stone finish that covers the support bars. The drive is longer than you'd think, but it offers a nice view of the San Gabriel River and surrounding mountainside. Bring lots of water as there is very little shade on the trail. You will also not have any cell reception, so plan accordingly. **If you're allergic to bees, be careful on this trail! There are a couple areas for beekeeping off the trail and usually the bees do not bother you. But, one time when my boyfriend and I were walking down the trail, 5-6 bees swarmed us. They kept following us and me and my boyfriend ended up both getting stung. This only happened once in the three times I've been, so just be careful especially if you are allergic!** read more

WARNING I went there on a Wednesday afternoon and I noticed a car tucked in the back. Something in my gut told me something was off, so I approached the car to see who it was. I first see a woman folding a shirt in the passenger seat. She glares at me, and I call out asking if this road leads to the tunnels. Her man jumps out of the seat and says yes. They were an older, maybe mid 40s Caucasian couple, they looked poor, like they were living in their car. I believe they were driving in an older minivan. Thinking since it was a couple, I thought maybe they were just people down on their luck living in their car. I come back an hour later and these fucking maggot pieces of shits dent my car frame trying to break in. They remove the rear back mirror and rummage through my car. I still remember their scent - stale popcorn. So if you go next time and you see a car posted up, take a picture of their license and faces because these crooks wait all day to find a victim to rob. My friends and I were actually looking for the Bridge to Nowhere, Unfortunately, we didnt realize we were at the Tunnels to Nowhere until a nice person told us we were in the wrong trail. Fortunately, the hike was pretty nice and the view was amazing. read more

I discovered these tunnels way back in 1978 I used to ride my motorcycle up on GMR ( Glendora Mt. road ) and I came upon the dirt road and road till the end of the second tunnel thinking what the heck are these doing here. Didn't know they were built as a escape route from Los Angels Incase of a nuclear attack but I guess they figured it out that it wasn't feasible so they stopped construction and abandoned there vision for an escape route. It's right next to the Bridge to Nowhere Trail. Instead of going left to Bridge of Nowhere at the fork, if you make a left, it will lead you to this trail. A good hike for beginners, a little boring for my taste except when you're walking through the tunnels which is entertaining for a bit. read more

The trail isn't that bad but it's a cool place to walk through. It's good for beginners but it's a little sad that the side you hike on is like dead and brown, where the opposite hill is nice and green and plush. read more

Went there today with the wife only hiked to the first tunnel pretty much a fire road the whole way so its great for mountain bikes. Anyways it was fun and easy to find just drive up azusa canyon hang a right on east fork road over the wash. Drive a few miles and you will hit a fork stay left onto shoe maker and drive until it dead ends at the parking area. The tunnels are huge and have a ton of history read more

I hiked here with a few friends over 3 years ago and never thought to do a review. This is a great trail for beginners although there are a few moderate inclines. You can do it just take breaks. There is a Bee Farm and you will definitely hear the buzzing and see a few strays but no worries for them... It was little after the fire that we went and the landscape was chared and resembled a dark forest from a Disney film...so sad! Hopefully it has recovered, I plan to return soon. The tunnels as I understand were a planned escape route to the high desert...Unfortunately its 2 lanes would create the worlds worst traffic jam had we tried to use it! Good trail for begginers. I actually can across this trail on accident looking for the bridge to nowhere trail. It's about 3.5 miles long and about 1300 ft elevation increase from the beginning of the trail to a bit past the second tunnel. I was at this trail in the end of January and the weather was great, not too chilly but just fine for once you warm up. I definitely recommend this trail to anyone out for a casual stroll or beginning hike. read more
