Tafoni formation at southern end of beach
    Bradley N.

As long as you don't mind a few rough edges, Tunitas Creek Beach is absolutely a hidden gem. There are few places along the San Mateo coast that offer such an adventurous experience, from start to finish. It's really quite the find. For starters, this is not a state park with established parking areas and pathways. It's publically accessible, thanks to the work of the California Coastal Commision, but the ways to reach the beach are unmarked and slightly off the beaten path. Most people choose a pull-out on Highway One where you'll have to descent a steep cliff using a series of fixed ropes - bring a pair of gloves if you can and some good shoes if you choose this option. Otherwise, it's a slip and slide to the beach. The far better option is to park on Tunitas Creek Road, just off Highway One, and go underneath the highway on "Joe's trail" and follow the creek to its eventual end at the beach itself. There are overgrown sections and one spot where a fixed rope helps you ascend a steep spot, but it's all part of the experience. This is the San Mateo coast, baby! Go with the flow. Once, you are at the beach, you'll be impressed, despite the odd bits of detritus that mar the unspoiled beauty of the place. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/4heT_F2tAOT09Nxh1oxnVQ?select=i2viIIKAkivuJ1-Om2xJhA#CbKzjnbZ6SheFU-ICjtEAg From North to South, you have nearly two miles of sand bookended by steep cliffs and tidal pools. There are rare tafoni formations (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/4heT_F2tAOT09Nxh1oxnVQ?select=H-M2cb_QDqlcfOWGKmXBxA#i2viIIKAkivuJ1-Om2xJhA) at each end, a cave at the southern end that leads to a remote clothing optional bathing spot, and masses of sea birds that use this beach as a feeding zone. It's a wonderful location for feeling removed from the hustle and bustle of the Bay area, and you are, in truth, on the Pacific plate West of the San Andreas fault, off the North American continent. It truly feels like another world. Is it worth the effort to come here? For most, it is not. But for all the rest, Tunitas Creek Beach is a destination not to be missed. It took me a few years to finally make it, but I'm glad that I did!

This is definitely the best beach I have ever been to! We were coming back from the tide pools one day, looking for a free beach to park at and enjoy. We stopped in this little spot, and, feeling adventurous, decided to climb down the hill. It is a bit rough getting down, but some nice people have tied a bunch of ropes together to make it easier. I am completely out of shape, and I can make it up and down without falling to my death *knocks on wood*. That said... Once you get down, you will [more often than not] experience a pretty secluded and always beautiful beach. If you cross through the cave to the other side, my favorite spot [the cave], you will sometimes experience some naked [mostly men] folks. We will always be coming back to this beach. ;3

Lots of trash n graffiti. Thanks to an Internet blog I found this beach. Yes it is very secluded and hard to find. Sketchy as f**k too. Hella hippies and crack heads along the side of the road. Arrived at 11 pm last night and saw a long road of cars on the side of the road. Didn't know if it was the right spot but took a chance anyway. The way down was sketch... Esp at night and we couldn't see anything. The trail down to the beach was about a little more than 1/4 mile. Getting onto the actual beach there were lots of people on the bottom at this time. I wish there were trash cans so that we could dump our garbage. Next time I would come early so I can actually see the beach

It's definitely a steep walk down the dirt path in the bluff to the beach so have shoes with treads. The parking is also first come first serve so you may just have to be lucky as it is a pull off on the side of the road. HOWEVER, because of all that it's a relatively secluded beach in Half Moon Bay without a fee for parking or to enter the area. When I came on a Monday afternoon there were only two other groups of people and very quiet. Great for reading a book by the water!

The southerly end is at the Cowell Ranch Trail in HMB and runs all the way north to Dardanelle Trail in Moss Beach. The Good: *Great views *Easy flat to moderate trails *Trails are mostly AC with some compact dirt, as well, and they are mostly in good to great shape. *Bike, dog, & horse friendly *Multiple beach access *Lots of different (free) parking lots up and down the coast The Meh: *Little to no shade for most of the trail. This isn't really a big deal, as HMB is almost always cloudy, foggy, and cold--but there's always a few days a year where it can get into the 80s and low 90s. The Ugly: *Some of the lots do require payment, so be sure to check signage before parking. Oh, and in case you're wondering, they most definitely *DO* enforce parking. Conclusion: One of my all-time favorite trails in The Bay.

There are a few benches throughout the trail to sit, relax, and enjoy. I would come back if I live closer to HMB!

The hike was about 80% shaded in some of the most gorgeous redwood forests, with crisp woodsy air, and lots of flora and wildlife. Wooded trails were nice and cool, which afforded a welcome respite from the warmer ambient temperature (non forested). Saw a lot of banana slugs, some dear, and a bunch of flowers of different types-some endemic and sadly some invasive to the bay. The hike offered views of the bay (at the expense of no shade) on top of the ridge, which was neat. Elevation gain of the hike was approximately 1500 feet, which was gradual in some parts but more steep on others. Didn't use a hiking pole, but wish I did because my legs felt like jello afterwards! The hike which was advertised as around 7 miles took my friend and me about 3h45m (advertised recommended time as 4h-4h30m) with a bunch of rest breaks. Definitely would be back to explore the other trails and get a good dose of trees and nature.

I say "walking trails" loosely because many of the trails can be considered light hikes, but it's an enjoyable coastal stroll nonetheless. Many of the trails are dirt paths but there are also sections of paved paths making it accessible for strollers and the handicapped. There's little to no shade on these paths, but the cool breeze from the beach will keep you cool. The best part about the bluffs of course are the lovely views. There are coastal views a galore and a few different ways to access the beach if you want to make a pitstop. I stopped by Ross Cove and Maverick's Beach on my jaunt through the bluffs, and both beaches were stunning. The parking lot is extremely small considering the amount of people that flock to this place. It's shared by beach goers, walkers, and fishermen, so you can imagine how busy and crowded it gets. My one piece of advice would be to park somewhere further (I parked at Johnson Pier) and make a day out of it while exploring the entire area. Or, try to stop by in the early morning hours or right before sunset when the crowds is thinnest. This is also a popular destination for people with dogs and small children since the trails are fairly easy to maneuver.
