    Limited parking

We have always had the nicest experience with the staff here. They keep the historic station clean and are very informative. Parking can be tricky when the restaurant next door is busy. My challenge is that we have taken the train to LA twice and both times it was late. There are not enough benches outside for waiting. Otherwise a great experience.

    Patio facing the train gate.

The station is always clean including the bathroom. The workers are all very friendly. They do a good job of keeping the homeless out of the station. Parking can be a little bit tough if there's an event across the street at Hotel Congress.

Great legroom, wide seats that recline way back with footrest

This train station is small, but the bathrooms are super clean, the AMTRAK attendants are helpful and there's plenty of seating inside and outside while waiting. It came in handy because our train was 3 hours late. We were in no hurry, so that wasn't a real problem. In fact, we discovered how much there was to see in downtown Tucson. Maynard's Restaurant and Market are in the same Train Station building. Both are excellent. Hotel Congress and Club Congress are across the street. The next blocks have a variety of good clubs and restaurants that are too many to mention. And for virtually any grocery, toiletry or snack need, there's Johnny Gibson's Market. It's a surprisingly BIG market. The streetcar also rolls past nearby if you want to check out the 4th Ave clubs and shops or University of Arizona. Pics of the station are already documented, so I'll just post pics of the train itself. Our trip from Tucson to El Paso was one of the best, if not the best, we've ever taken. Bon voyage!

It was my first time using a train. Check in was super easy and so was getting settled into our seats. There are a few things I wish I was told or was explained to me when I boarded. Like how the bathrooms work or the actual layout of the train so I knew where to go. It was an 18 hour trip so I figured it all out as I went along. So I thought I'd share some things that I think are helpful. The seating for a train is just like an airplanes except your seats can recline. The seats also come with two plug in ports for your electronics which is great. As far as I'm concerned, all bathrooms are downstairs and if the light above the door is on, it means it's occupied. Also has a diaper changing station in the bathroom which is nice. As for buying food, it's like school lunches. Simple, easy, fast, and a priced for convenience. What I didn't know was that you could bring your own food on board. I would also pay attention to your stops because when my stop finally did come, all I was told was that we'd be there in 15 minutes but wasn't told when we pulled in to the station to start exiting or that we were there and we could leave. Last thing, be courtesy to your fellow passengers.

There's a huge train enclosed in a fenced area that you can take photos in front of. There's also a railroad crossing in front of the train museum. The museum is closed on Mondays so I didn't get a chance to explore it. There's a store with all kinds of cool for purchase including bottled veggies, beer/wine, juice/water, snacks, magnets, keychains, the list goes on & on. . . This is a very cool stop on the way to your final destination.

Happy Tails sent us multiple pictures and videos daily, and in them Mickey looked like he was taking it all in stride and having a great time. Hugo, his driver really got Mickey and totally loved on him. Mickey was happy to see us after three days, and he didn't look any worse for the wear. He followed us around closely for a little while but was still his goofy, happy and wonderful self. The people at Happy Tails are serious animal lovers and they care about their precious cargo! He has Addison's disease and it's hard for him to cope with stress, and I wanted to make sure that the transition would go smoothly. I found Happy Tails online and all the reviews were great so I've decided to contact them. Kim called me right back. She sounded very positive and helpful which made me feel very comfortable. Every time I sent her questions, she answered my right back. The day before we were flying out, there was a change with our flight and I was getting stressed out about it. I reached out to Kim and then she clarified that everything is OK. I also had a payment issue at the check. The lady told me to pay at the check in even I already paid to Happy Tails. I already I gave her the authorization document, but she was very demanding and I wasn't sure what was going on. I didn't want to waste my time so I paid, and contacted Kim right after. She told me that I didn't have to pay at the check in, and she would refund me from Happy Tails. I was able to pick up Freddy without any issues at Honolulu Airport, and Freddy came out just fine. I really don't think I could have done it by myself. I made a great decision to work with Happy Tails.

In this case, we visited the Southern Arizona Heritage and Visitor Center in Tucson, which is open daily (except holidays) from 10-5 and offers free admission. The two staff members at the Center were very helpful. When we asked about the free tours that are offered daily at 11 am and 2 pm (that were mentioned on their website), we learned that they're usually only for groups and that they only cover the indoor exhibits. (See next paragraph). A volunteer offered to accompany us as we reviewed the exhibits, but we declined. The Center was a great starting place to discover all that southern Arizona, the Sonoran Desert, and the Sky Islands have to offer. The Center is modern, clean, and successfully highlights the attractions of the area. There are seven large, multi-paneled storytelling portals that showcase innovation, history, arts and culture, food, recreation, water, and nature, as well as a huge topographic map, a theater with rotating content, and an attractive gift shop. After we reviewed the exhibits and picked up some souvenirs in the gift shop, we ventured outside into the courtyard -- finding that the free "Music in the Courtyard" musicians were just starting. Different musicians play on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 am - 1 pm. (See website for list of scheduled performers). We were fortunate to be entertained by Liz and Pete's Sparrows, natives of Tucson. The duo, Liz Cerepanya and Peter Dalton Ronstadt, refer to themselves as songsters of the Postmodern American West. With two voices, a guitar, and a Pennsylvania stompbox, they played Americana, soulful desert, and roots music. The courtyard is a beautiful setting but, in our opinion, wasn't conducive for interactions between the musicians and the audience. They were so tucked into a corner that we could hardly see them. What we heard though was excellent. We next took in the beauty of the exterior of the Pima County Historic Courthouse, which was built in 1929 and was in-service for 86 years. It obtained its "historic" designation from the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It has been dubbed "the most outstanding Spanish Colonial Revival building in Arizona with its elegant blue-tiled dome recorded as its most prominent feature." We reflected and remembered at the January 8th Embrace Memorial. Nineteen people had been shot by a lone gunman as they gathered at a grocery store in NW Tucson in 2011, to speak Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords at an event designed for community engagement. Six persons were killed, and thirteen wounded. The Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and a tribute of hope. The film that shows in the VC theater also honors and remembers these victims. Our next activities, recommended by the VC, but taking us away from the VC were to: (1) walk "the Turquoise Trail" (Presidio Trail), which is a 2.5 mile self-guided walking loop through historic downtown Tucson, marked by a turquoise line painted, and sometimes peeling, line painted on the sidewalk, connecting over 20 historic sites like the Presidio Museum (starting/ending point), Hotel Congress, and the Pima County Courthouse. Printed maps are available at the VC and at museums for $2; there's also an app for $5. (2) to take the free Sun Link streetcar on its 3.9 mile route through five of Tucson's neighborhoods. Underground parking is easy at the El Presidio Parking Garage, at a minimum rate of $2 for 0-2 hours, increasing by $1 per hour up to a maximum of $8 (for 7+hours). Validated parking is available with a $20 purchase at the Visitor Center or with tickets from the Gem and Mine Museum. There are clean restrooms available.
