Our breakfasts were absolutely delicious, but what really made the experience was the incredible service and kindness of the staff. Miss Harrison's daughter was especially sweet. I asked her to surprise me with a treat from the bakery, and instead she brought me THREE to try--their staple monkey bread, a chocolate chip cookie, and a carrot cake muffin--and only charged me for one because she wanted me to experience them all. Such a thoughtful and unexpected gesture! Everything felt fresh, homemade, and made with care, and the entire staff made us feel so welcome. Between the amazing breakfast, delicious pastries, great coffee, and genuinely wonderful service, it was the perfect little find to end our weekend in Palisade. We were greeted warmly and brought coffee right away, and the waitstaff was amazing from beginning to end. What really stood out to me was how dialed in and attentive the staff were to all of their guests. Our coffee cups were continually kept full, we never once had to ask for a refill. They seemed to have a great awareness of what was happening throughout the restaurant, checking on tables, keeping things moving, and making sure people had what they needed. That kind of attentive service makes such a difference, especially in a busy diner. Nobody was standing around waiting for someone to notice them, and yet the service never felt rushed or impersonal. The whole place has a wonderful local, old-school café charm. I especially loved the pink retro vibe. The staff were all wearing the same pink shirts with big, bold lettering, apparently something the locals had made for the waitstaff as a joke directed at the line cook. I thought that was really sweet and added to the feeling that this was a place where the staff and locals genuinely knew each other and had a sense of community. And the food did not disappoint. The biscuits and gravy were amazing. The pancakes were very good, and the hash was great. But the fried French toast was definitely the unexpected surprise. It was incredibly sweet and tasted really good, but WOW -- the portion was huge! It honestly felt like a serving meant for three people. You definitely aren't finishing that by yourself! I also have to mention the coffee. The coffee was better than what I've had at most diners, which is saying something because diner coffee can be pretty hit or miss. One thing I always pay attention to in a restaurant is the bathrooms. The women's bathroom smelled good and the toilet was clean, although the sink was stopped up. My son said the men's bathroom was not in the greatest shape and could definitely use some attention. Clean bathrooms are important to me in a restaurant, so I hope they'll give the men's room a little TLC. Overall, though, 19th Street Diner is exactly the kind of place I love finding when traveling -- good local food, genuinely friendly and attentive people, a quirky personality, and that authentic neighborhood-diner feeling that you just can't manufacture.
