My family hails from Karl's city on my Dad's side and nothing brings me more joy is when Karl decides to show up to greet me. It doesn't always happen and I do enjoy Karl's other friend Sally Sun but when he comes out to play, I feel at home. Karl can be thick and mysterious or just a little bit of coverage. I enjoy when you can barely see in front of you, but this can be dangerous too especially if driving. Last time I was in SF, Karl did not appear but I know when I least expect it, he will show up covering the city by the bay with a beautiful foggy mist!

I've been "sitting" with this group from time to time over the past year. That means we all sit on…read morecushions (or on the couch) in a room in silence for 45 minutes or so. That might be anathema to some, but we like it. We keep coming back, in fact! What are we doing? Breathing, giving attention to the flow of our breaths and the tides of life within us. It sounds very "Berkeley" but it all takes place in Oakland actually. The Bay Area Young Adult Sangha formed several years ago, as a number of young (20 and 30 something) people met on meditation retreats at the Spirit Rock Retreat Center and wanted to develop a sense of community in the Bay Area. So they set up a very simple format: Wednesday evening, sit for 45 minutes or so, introductions, a brief quote or reading meant to elicit thoughtful contemplations and verbal expressions, and tea. I've been there when the group sharings were deep and provocative and I've been there when the group members briefly introduced themselves and then broke into light-hearted exchanges as the tea arrived in the room. Every night offers a different "vibe" and a different combination of personalities. One night a long-time member brought up a phrase that stuck with me, he was talking about "fuck yeah!" moments, the kind that occur with the awareness that you are fully living life. Another night during "tea" I was gently cajoled into going out dancing with some of the group members later that evening. We were out till 1am or so shaking our booties at a club in the Haight-Ashbury area; not what one would expect from a meditation community, but that's what is so cool about BAYAS, it is open, fresh, and unrestricted by any dogma. Sometimes they have spiritual "movie nights" too, with a projector and screen and popcorn, it makes for a good show. And a great sense of community. Fuck yeah!

I joined them last night for their weekly open sitting (Wednesdays starting at 7:30pm) and was left with a great impression of the group. I am fairly new to meditation and have been looking for a supportive and intimate space to explore my practice. The Bay Area Young Adult Sangha (BAYAS) open up their home in Oakland to young people in the 20's and 30's. The residents take turns leading the weekly sanghas, which consists of a brief introduction, a 45 minute silent sitting, readings and discussion, then tea/snacks and hanging out. We had a group of 7 people, all who were very friendly and welcoming. Two of us were new, including me, and a couple others practice meditation regularly and are friends with the residents. Part of the defining characteristic of the group is that it is not very structured in terms of guidance or methodology. I wouldn't come here if you are completely new to meditation (although I'm sure if you came in 15 minutes early, Chris or another resident would gladly give a run-down of the basics). I was not really able to open up much during our discussion, which was a personal thing and due to other things weighing down in my mind. But I didn't feel like I had to speak and felt respected for my presence, even if it were in silence. Chatting over tea we learned that there were a couple avid rock climbers among us, a grad student in clinical psych, someone who is going to Burning Man, and another who just published an EP - wow! I finally made it out this week, after moving the event from Wednesday to Wednesday on my calendar... and am glad to have discovered the group. If you are looking for a relaxed and young atmosphere, I'd recommend you check it out at least once to see if you like the vibe. The sitting starts at 7:30pm every Wednesday night and people start filtering out around 9:15pm. As a heads up, the area is residential, but you are at the right place. Go in through the wooden gate and by the doorbell there's a sign that says "Here for a sitting? Come on in!"

I've attended a few different film festivals in my day, from our own SF International to Tribeca to…read moreSundance, and I've even parodied a festival when I worked on a Keanu Reeves Film Tribute (you'll have to ask me about that one in person). From my recent experiences with the Tiburon Int'l Film Festival over the last few weeks, I have to say that it was right up there near the top of my list. Here's why: Film festivals should always champion films, shorts and documentaries that might not always see the light of day (typically because of commercial reasons), but are definitely important or at least great examples of their genre. Tiburon managed to bring together a series of films that were reflective of that. Two shining examples of that were American Fork (full disclosure: a film that my company sponsored!) and Becoming John Ford, but that's really just the start. After talking to a bunch of folks who attended different screenings, one commonality was the message of: "You should definitely see if it you get the chance." Another was: "Just go see something, the whole program deserves viewing." But a film festival is not just about the films but also about the filmmakers, actors and the community who puts the festival together in the first place. When it all comes together, and you, as a patron, get to meet and mingle with these people, it's just so up close and personal. There's a real sense of immediacy and intimacy happening, and it's a lot better than any behind the scenes interview on a DVD. Are you going to see the next runaway hit at Tiburon? Maybe, but probably not, and that just might be the greatest thing about this little gem of a festival. Especially festivals that are non-profits like the Tiburon International Film Festival. Film Festivals are tremendously powerful things. They provide an outlet for independant directors. They give a voice to people who may not have been heard, otherwise. They increase awareness and understanding about the world around us - through moving (literally and figuratively) visuals. To give a film festival an less that the props it deserves for bringing people together, so that they can learn more about other cultures, other countries, other times, and just others out there, seems almost strange to me. Admittedly there are films and film festivals that may resonate more with others, but I can guarantee that if you were to skim through all of the Tiburon International Film Festival's schedule you would be able to find at at least one film, AT LEAST (because I know I found many) that would resonate with you. If you were to study their film schedule, you would find a film, and I'm sure many others, that would force you to re-examine the way you thought. If even, just a little. Unfortunately not really knowing how to drive, puts me at a little bit of a disadvantage for the later film showings here (since the ferry does stop running early), but Tiburon is a darling getaway - so if you're in the same boat as me, booking a cute hotel room - would be well worth it. I would highly suggest, anyone curious or passionate about film...or well the world around and beyond you - to look into exploring this festival more next year. And on a beautiful day - make sure to take the scenic route over here. Your senses will be blown away. (Disclosure - we've worked with Tiburon International Film Festival this year - but my five star review still stands)
