What a joy to find at the top of the High St in Winchester! A shop that sells all the old sweets…read morethat one thought had long disappeared. Buttered brazils, strawberry Fizz Wizzes, humbugs of various stripes, liquorice is all its awful guises (I hated it) including the packet of sherbert with a liquorice stick inside like a small firework. Those flying-saucer sherbets in different art-deco colours; aniseeed balls, pear drops, barley sugar, sarsparilla, sherbert lemons. A treasure trove. Interestingly, most are still made in Scotland and the North of England. It's a labour of love by the owner, Judith Burnett, to keep each jar stocked. How lucky we are that she does.

(And of course, every adult who is not afraid to let thier inner child out!)…read more I walked in and my mouth dropped, still possesing my sweet tooth, which I might add I hope I never lose, I was in heaven, all the bon bons under the sun, sugar coated jelly sweats, gobstopper, massive gobstoppes, sugar laces, liquorice alsorts, boiled sweets... oh it was just wonderous! No one in thier right mind can walk into this place and not feel the smile burst onto their face. There is something about sweet shops that just make everything with the world ok. So, if you need a bit of joy in your life visit scrumtiously (not enough shops use this as a name!) sweet and get that inner child buzzing with wonder and excitment about which sugary susbtance will soon be hitting your taste buds and filling you with complete satisfaction!

Yes, yes - a contradiction in terms! Just walking through its doors brightens my day. The shop assistants greet you with a warm smile, offers you an array of childhood delights from strawberry laces to chocolate bon bons. With a bag of sweet treats in my pocket, even a long walk in the cold is an attractive proposition!

You know that phrase: "kid in a candy store?"…read more Think: candies displayed in old glass jars, chocolates made from the U.K. (bought boxes of rose cream filled one for mom and dark chocolate covered ginger for my friend), toffee, caramels, gummies and even some American candy. You think it, they probably have it. This place has that nostalgic atmosphere and sweet aromas which make you feel so good just by being in the shop. You can't go wrong with chocolate anything and English toffee that'll stick to your teeth; these are the stuff that your friends dream of. And it's so much better than that Roman Bath magnet that's just gonna sit there and collect dust. Thank me later! ;-)

The idea for this aladdin's cave of sugary delights came from a sepia photograph the owners saw on a confectionnary newspaper. And when you walk through its doors you'll see how authentically fifties this sweet shop is. The owners of the shop obviously love what they do, and will enthusiastically talk you through all their stock and help you make your choice. I can guarantee if you go back to your office with a bag of sweets from Mr Simms - you'll be the most popular person at work.

Just a quick trip in to this tiny gem of a store and it's like all my homesickness disappears. They carry everything from PopTarts to Lucky Charms to Arizona Ice Tea and Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing. A major plus side to this business is the prices of their stock. While it's obviously more expensive than it would be back home, it is definitely the most reasonable pricing I've seen in the country. Except maybe some of the sweets/candy are a bit overpriced but I'm guessing that's just because they're quite popular and why not capitalize on that?! I do draw the line at £1.25 Twinkies. That's basically $2 for a single, individual Twinkie. I'm pretty sure you can get a 10 pack for close to that back home, and really, I can live without Twinkies. (Note: I'm not sure why they're storing/displaying Twinkies in a drinks fridge. It's not like they're gonna expire. Don't those things survive nuclear war or something?!) The one critique I have is the staff. On the day I went it was two younger girls who looked like this was the last place they wanted to be; a stark contrast to me practically jumping up and down going, "Oh my god they have ___!!!!". All the old favourites line the shelves like wallpaper in the old fashioned tall pots. You pick what you want, the lady weighs it up and that's it - cue memory lane. Sherbet Lemons will always be my favourite but there are so many others too. This is also a good shop to find sugar and gluten free sweeties - which is pretty rare so fair play!

However why not, the owner explained that it had been open since February and was very popular with people wanting a return to more traditional shops.The shelves were stocked with jars of every conceivable sweet including my favourite of sweet and sours. They also had a small selection of hand made nougat and speciality choclates very tempting!! I liked their novely range of choclate bars with labels to cover every type of occasion/person, daughter, son, teacher, thank you, cheer up etc. The shop also stocked helium balloons which I have always loved.
