I've been shopping at Records Hardware (Ace) for several years now. They are always super-friendly…read moreand welcoming the moment you walk in the door. When you go looking around for something, you never have to worry about finding it because there are people seemingly at every aisle to help. What's more, they ALL seem to be super-knowledgeable! Are they all trained on everything?! Maybe I've just been lucky, but it sure seems that way. I have to especially call out Chris in the paint department. He's been there for years, but even after not coming by for longgg stretch (we were out of town for much of the COVID-19 Pandemic) when my wife and I returned, he knew us exactly, remembered all our paint choices and helped us in every way possible. The selection in the store is just big enough to find what you need, but their online service provides what seems like a limitless selection. Prices are comparable to other stores. The fact Records has stood the test of time is evidence of how wonderful they are, and certainly a valued merchant in the little town of Raton, New Mexico.

Record's Ace Hardware in Raton, NM is inviting civil litigation and negative social media…read moreattention. This store profiles customers through application of arbitrary, unreasonable and inconsistent discriminatory practices in refusing service to potential customers. It has been my personal experience that the store owners and managers will ignore, harass, refuse service, or call the police on individuals who are white, who are community activists/are known to be working to engender positive change in the community, or who complain either about the store's poor operations, management and quality control or about the store's discriminatory practices to Ace Hardware's national customer relations. I further believe that I am treated differently because, by my observation, I am "not their friend", I don't "look like them", or I am "new" or "not from around here". National Ace has done nothing to address or correct these problems or practices, which can only serve to damage Ace's heretofore good reputation as "helpful hardware folks".. All people of good conscience should demand that Ace treat all customers equally, with respect and dignity befitting its espoused, but poorly implemented, principles.

We hired Downtown Electric to retrofit twelve sub panels and replace one sub panel in an apartment…read morebuilding. Twelve of them were bid at $750 each. The one new panel was bid at $1800 because it had more circuit breakers requiring a larger panel. Upon completion of the work I noticed the one additional panel was not replaced as per the estimate, but instead retrofitted exactly like the other twelve with the addition of two spare,(not in use) circuit breakers. When I called to ask the owner Joey Bloomquist about it he attempted to justify,(or confuse me) with some excuse about how he figured out a way to make it work, and then agreed to adjust the estimate and subtract $800, (still $250 higher than the other panels) but only because he got called out, not because it was the right thing to do. If I hadn't said anything he would have let us pay the full $1800 for it. My focus is still on the estimate. The $500 permit charge sounds way too high. I looked it up online which was dated three days after the work was completed and learned it was only $183. (I'm thinking this guy really has some nerve. First the $1050 overcharge and now another $317!) I'm feeling personally insulted now. Keep in mind, the estimate says,"REIMBURSE PERMIT CHARGE... $500." Maybe this is worded too vaguely and should be clarified because this sounds like he's claiming he paid Regional $500 for the permit which is obviously not true. I called to ask him why he overcharged $317 and I finally get a call back with the hidden charges explanation. "I had to go to the regional office"..." I had to draw pictures"... "I had to discuss the job"... "I had to do load calculations"..."I usually charge $1000 for this,"(he wouldn't have gotten the work). None of the other contractors estimates showed any of these charges so it just sounded like more BS. His estimate was within range of the other two closest bids. The only reason he got the work is because of the cleaner retrofit vs the other bids which were for new panels. It feels like Mr. Bloomquist saw me as an easy pushover he could squeeze some extra money out of and I wouldn't even know it. Maybe it wasn't just me, maybe this is a common business practice with this company. I never expected so much shade from a company whose profession is lighting. You would think that doing $10,000 worth of business with him would earn a little more gratitude than disrespect.
