I have been a loyal customer of The Gentlemen's Barbershop in Mount Joy for years. While the staff…read moregenerally provides great service, I have consistently observed the owner speaking poorly to both his customers and his barbers. He frequently berates and belittles his staff in the open, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. My decision to leave a negative review stems from a direct interaction I had with the owner during my most recent visit. My usual barbers were busy, and seeing that the owner was not cutting anyone's hair and had an empty chair, I approached his station. As a busy professional with limited time, I asked if he was available to cut my hair. Instead of a professional response, he immediately adopted an attitude, seemingly annoyed by the request, and asked, "Don't you want to wait for your guy?" When I walked away to sit down, rather than letting it go, he engaged me again and escalated the situation. When I asked if he was "too good" to cut my hair, he launched into a rant about a "silent rule" regarding waiting for specific barbers--despite me directly asking him for a service he was available to provide. He proceeded to argue with me and speak down to me in front of his staff and other customers. It is unacceptable for a business owner to publicly berate a long-time client or to refuse service based on arbitrary "silent rules" when a customer is pressed for time. This behavior is unprofessional and hostile. I want to warn potential customers that while the barbers may be skilled, the management creates a toxic environment.

I decided to avoid the one shop that did have a single, solitary, negative review on Google (Snyder's), but as I was driving back and forth down Main Street looking for the one other shop I thought I'd seen before, I kept passing Snyder's. In frustration, I turned left on a side street to make a U-turn, and lo and behold I saw *this* little gem of a shop, Shelly's, tucker away between a couple of houses. First thing I noticed upon entering was how clean and tidy the place was. It looked very comfortable and welcoming, with plenty of room (unlike some barber shops). The shop was empty as I entered - something the owner mentioned was not usual for a Friday afternoon - and so the gentleman beckoned me to the chair right away with the words, "Let's get you comfortable and then we can talk about what you'd like." The sense I got from this barber was of small-town warmth combined with truly professional skill. We briefly talked about what length would look good on me, and he said he'd go light to start out (he could always take more off) and do it on just a part of my head so I could see the effect. I appreciated that touch - with most barbers, you tell them your best guess and they go to town, and if you don't like it, too bad. We ultimately decided to go shorter, and after he'd done a once-over of my whole head, we decided to go even a good bit shorter in celebration of warm summer weather approaching, and the resulting cut was excellent - perfectly balanced, even, and flattering of my head's shape (insofar as much as that is possible - more like hiding my head's flaws as much as possible). I very much appreciated his attention to detail and willingness to spend extra time going over my cut again to bring it exactly to my preferences. I always appreciate it when a barber skillfully wields a straight razor, and a few quick (and painless - not always the case with some barbers!) swipes and he had the bit around my ears was crisped up. But that wasn't all - I felt a bit of hot lather on the back of my neck and a few more quick swipes of the razor to get my neckline clean. I thought that was a very nice touch, and the warm lather certainly felt nice. Through it all, he (and I'm sorry, he told me his name twice but I can't remember it at the moment) kept a light but knowing touch. As well, he let me simply enjoy the experience - we talked a little about my job and his family, but he didn't push me for conversation like some barbers can. I appreciated that, as sometimes I just want to relax in the chair. And for all that PLUS a beard trim, he charged less than just a plain (mediocre) cut at Great Clips! Will definitely be back. 4.8/5 stars.
