I come here often as part of a monthly performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the owner is super amazing, kind and on top of things. I haven't lived in Ohio for nearly 20 years, and was happily surprised to see this cinema still standing and playing movies. The lobby has been cared for and maintained. The actual theater, however, is lacking in a couple of areas. I'm willing to look past the rickety seats and the mess of boxes stacked on the floor near the screen. I'm even willing to forgive the lack of bass a decent subwoofer would provide in this space. But what I will not forgive in a theater experience is a dim screen. I'm aware enough to know bulbs for theater projectors are extremely expensive, and many small theaters will avoid updating their bulbs for as long as possible, but it's time, friends. It's time. The images on screen looked like the brightness was turned down 50%, and that's not an exaggeration. Went to see Fantastic Four and I was having a real hard time seeing anything in darker moments. The Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer played in the beginning and it looked so dull and colorless. The tickets and snacks are affordably priced, and I'd love to continue supporting this place that has such a nostalgic hold on my heart, but I refuse to have a subpar experience with something as fundamental as the image on screen at a movie theater. Hopefully y'all get that fixed soon. I'll be a regular if you do. But make sure you announce it to the world or I'll never know.

I'm glad they did. The center used to be the house of Mary Jane Harter Coleman Hayner. When she passed away, she left her home to the Troy Board of Education with instructions that the house be used as a library, museum and for educational and cultural purposes. The house itself is beautiful, and the rooms are preserved in good condition. The Hayner family ran a distillery, and there is a room displaying their whiskey bottles. The house also hosts art exhibits. When I was there, the house was hosting an exhibit of paintings by Nelly Toll, a Holocaust survivor. Hiding from the Nazis in Poland, Ms. Toll painted water colors of what she had hoped her life would be. In addition to the painting, there was a video with narration from Ms. Toll on her story, which was interesting and moving. The house also hosts cultural meetings and classes, and can be rented for parties and weddings. The grounds around the house are beautiful and would be a great place for a small wedding. Oh, it should be mentioned that admission to the Troy Hayner Cultural Center is free, and that you can take photos while you are there.
