I decided to try this demanding course after a recommendation from one of my golfing buddies, who deigned to join me on a hot, sunny, breezy, humid Friday afternoon in July. We warmed up on the large, contoured putting/chipping green. The member that was to join us cancelled, so it was just the two of us, and my buddy didn't recall much from his prior round years ago. I started off quite well until we headed back into the 1-2 club wind on the 523-yard Par 5 5th Hole. That was a killer, but I left with a nice bogey despite a few mediocre shots. Somehow I managed to make the turn playing bogey golf, but I blew up on the first four holes of the Back 9 as I tired and went through my fourth golf glove of the round. This course is beautiful and challenging, forcing you to think about shot placement (I'm not a big hitter) on every hole. The greens rolled true and were fast, which I prefer, but there were several very tough (dare I say ridiculous?) pin placements, which always seemed to involve a subtle break just as the ball loses speed around the hole. Still, I putted well and ended up in the 90s. The course is perfectly manicured. The greens are receptive and fast. Greens fee for a senior on Friday was $100 with a pull cart, which frankly I think is reasonable for this course. Personnel were all quite helpful and friendly. Pace was just about 4 hours, though I'll bet it can play a bit faster if a foursome knows the course and plays ready golf. I was glad to have my Garmin GPS, but there are enough sprinkler heads that you can find your yardage (but you probably won't know about that little trap just over the hill!). I'd love to come back in cooler weather where the wind isn't quite as much of an issue. Great fun! read more

08.24.2023 I'm incredibly disappointed with the current state of Troy Burne. This used to be a gem but no longer. I won a few dollars and played pretty well today but the deterioration of this course is hard to ignore, it requires me to vent, and it's definitely not worth $140. To start with the tee boxes are a mess, they are uneven, basically domed with patches of grass that make finding a level stance impossible. It's frustrating to start every hole on such a shoddy surface. The bunkers are a sorry sight. The felt under the sand is exposed all over. Even the bunker frames are visible due to the lack of maintenance. Sand quality is poor and this was more like hitting from hard dirt pits. The greens, once the pride of the course, are now a disaster. They're littered with pitch marks that clearly haven't been tended to in ages. The mowing is inconsistent, leaving the greens with an unkempt and unsightly appearance that is difficult to putt on. The holes aren't even cut well. To say the edges are shaggy doesn't do it justice. The entire place is just run down. I will say the grounds crew was out filling divots in the fairway and that's great but they must be instructed to just throw the grass clippings from the greens into the rough. Many courses do this but they walk five steps more and throw it in the trees. If you aren't going to remove it from the course don't just leave them just off the fairway. That's just laziness. It's painful to see how the new owner, Bill Holst, is letting this place crumble. It's clear he has his eyes set on turning it into a private club, and he must have some master plan that includes neglecting the course and driving away the current customers. I don't know but the lack of care and investment is evident in every corner of the course. Mr Holst, I'm sure you are a nice man and no doubts super rich and far smarter than myself but what you are doing, or allowing to happen, to a once fantastic course, is saddening. For years I've told folks TB is one my favorite courses. This is no longer true. I'm not coming back until some significant changes are made. Maybe never. I'm sure this plays right into the plan on going private but come on. This is a mess. My advice to anyone looking east of the cities. Play Stoneridge. Play White Eagle. Heck, play the Royal and their goofy greens. At least the course is maintained. Skip Troy Burne, they don't deserve your $140. Side note: Mr Tentis, you should be ashamed to have your name associated with this course. This will tarnish your legacy. This is truly ridiculous. And for anyone reading and thinking I'm overreacting. Don't believe me and try for yourself but remember this, one of the best golf instructors in Minnesota or Wisconsin, Brent Snyder, moved his entire operation away from Troy Burne and down to Killarney, yes Killarney. That should tell you everything you need to know. It really is a shame to witness such a decline in what was once a wonderful golfing experience. Save your time and money and find a course that still values its players and the course itself. read more

A really nice golf course. It is very open, the fairways are in great shape, and have incredible greens. It is well staffed, has a great practice green, and is very playable despite the plentiful bunkers and water. I didn't see the maintenance issues referred to in the other review. I did see on I think hole 6 or 7 some deep bunkers where the lip was exposed, but that is it, just to set the record straight. Beer from the cart is reasonably priced. To get 5 stars - in cart GPS is necessary at this price point. Also, the maintenance crew was a little obtrusive (albeit it was a Monday and they had to repair) but the guy cutting the grass followed us for 3 holes and the guy patching the tee boxes for 5. I would suggest having them go the other way - I think he was amused by following us but we didn't like having an audience. read more

1-2 stars for service and amenities and 3-4 for the course. We always play this course on my husband's birthday as we have considered it a higher end course against many others in the Twin Cities. Today was so average I don't see us making any special effort to return. So what if it's a Monday, the course was full (sunny and 84 degrees) and there was no cart girl, and the snack/drink shack out front was closed. This was not communicated to us in check-in. We do not bring food and alcohol into nice courses in respect of their rules, but literally we had zero water, snacks, or beer on the front 9. This was to be a fun party day! On the turn we had to go to the bar and grab enough beverages for the back. Had to go to the bar to even get water. Also no paper towels in the men's room. While the course is nice, with the lack of service, and a lame restaurant, we are going elsewhere from today forward to get a full experience that is worth the price you pay. BTW, everyone in the parking lot as we were leaving were talking about going to Hudson afterward for food and drinks. read more

I've played most of the courses in the Twin Cities metro and Troy Burne is arguably the best track within 100 miles of the metro. Pricier at around $90 but a great experience. Very friendly staff. A must play if you are in the area. read more

This is a Tom Lehman-designed semiprivate course. The Pioneer Press named it the best Twin Cities Public Course, it was nominated for Best New Public Course by Golf Digest. It's a beautiful links style course, with rolling prairie grasses. As far as picturesque and quality of play, it does not get any better than holes 12, 13 and 14. At least not in the Midwest. $: You'll pay around $100 after all fees. The event center, clubhouse and restaurant/bar areas were all upgraded in 2014. Food and service are good. BITCHES: In reading some of the negatives about this course, I will say this: If you're looking for lots of fancy, schmancy amenities that make you feel like you are really somebody important, Troy Burne probably isn't your place. But if you like lightening fast, tight greens....this is a great track. In the words of Bill Linneman (Director of the Wisconsin State Golf Association): "The back nine at Troy Burne is the finest nine holes in Wisconsin and that includes Whistling Straights." As far as no GPS on the carts, Troy Burne is kind of old school....that's what your range finder is for. The criticism about the poorly maintained bunkers is a valid one, considering the timing. The reviewer was there in 2012, coming off of record high June-July flooding in our area. The steep sand bunkers are a challenge to maintain with so much rain. LESSONS? If you're looking for lessons, Dave, the resident pro, is one of the best. Impressive resume and a very nice guy. In fact, I almost gave a 5 star because the entire clubhouse is awesome - very friendly staff and all very good, passionate golfers. But I'm scroogelike when it comes to doling out 5's and I will say if there are any weak spots here it is that they tend to do too many tournaments (which might be changing a bit) and their driving range does seem like a bit of an afterthought. IN THE END For such a quality course, it's a "working man's" golf course, not stuffy just beautiful, challenging and welcoming. read more

Just spent $111 on a Friday morning & we played in 4:45. The ranger didn't seem to care about the pace of play. Won't be back. Way too time consuming to play, and this course is not worth that price! read more

Ive always loved this course. But yesterday's 5 hour marathon is making me rethink the new manager and operator. There is no excuse for not sending out the Rangers and taking action when play is so slow. There were obvious slow groups that didn't care about keeping up with the group in front of them. Hope they get their act together. I won't be back until they do. read more

Played on a spring early rate. The course is challenging but lacking something that I cannot put my finger on. If you want to spend 70-90 dollars for a once a year course, this is my least favorite in the area. Stoneridge and White Eagle are 1 and 2. Don't avoid playing this course if the opportunity presents itself. read more

the best course you will ever play for under $100 a good club house but I wouldn't plan on eating there the food doesn't match up with the course stop and get a gas station hot dog on the way ,the course is set up for a good pace but still offers plenty of challenge with allot of hazards throughout ,bring a client to impress them you can't go wrong! read more

I've played most of the top courses in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. Troy Burne is one of the best. This 18 hole beautiful Tom Lehman course is always in great condition and a joy to play. Things I like include: -Outstanding professional staff. I am always treated as well if not better than I have been at area private country clubs. This is a truly polite, respectful and professional staff who seem to honestly appreciate you playing Troy Burne. -The beauty of the course is not diminished by crowded up scale housing development like some area courses. It is a very nature beautiful course with an open feel. -The starters and scheduling people do not pack you into tight start times. I've never waited or felt pushed on this course. That's a huge deal to me and part of the 'private course' feel you get at Troy Burne. Troy Burne is not an easy course and not an inexpensive course. If you want inexpensive, there are several pretty good and really cheap courses in Western Wisconsin you can play. By the way, if you want to buy new clubs this is the place to go. Brent Snyder golf pro will spend whatever time is necessary to fit you properly and will also give you a better than big box store price on your clubs. Go to Troy Burne for a top quality, really pleasant round of golf. If you love golf, you're going to really like this course. I highly recommend it. read more

Played July, 2012. I had heard good things about the course, but for the high-end greens fees, I came away quite disappointed. The practice facilities are mediocre with scruffy range balls and poorly defined targets. The carts do not have GPS. Fairway yardage markers are few and far between. No drinking water on the course (I think that is a Wisconsin thing.) Shabby porta-potties. The biggest issue, however, is that the signature feature of the course - it's 120 bunkers - have been so poorly maintained that the burlap bunker liners are exposed in many places and just lurking below the surface in many others. One bunker shot I hit pulled up a giant rusty staple that must have been holding the burlap in place. It could be a great place, but in it's current state, it does not warrant it's premium price. read more

Troy Burne is a fantastic track. The course caters to all caliber of players, ranging from 5000-7000 yards. The layout is extremely fair. Plenty of landing area off the tees, however, very difficult approach shots. It is a 1st class golf course, you will not be disappointed. read more
