After corresponding with Chris for a bit over Aid BnB, we decided to book ourselves and our pup into the Herdwick Inn. Not only was Chris able to accommodate, he upgraded us for less than £10. As we drove out to Penruddock, we weren't sure what to expect. We drove through Penrith to the more rural areas, and were beginning to wonder if we'd make the right booking. Upon entering this amazing pub and inn, my fiancé and I were stunned. The first thing we noticed was that Chris, the owner, seemed to be talking to a regular. He knew everything about the man, and we immediately realized we were at a place that really cared. The pub was welcoming and warm, with carpets and a fire. We were no less impressed with our room. In fact, we were floored. Beautiful, exposed beams welcomed us, with accents that really made us feel like we were at a hunting lodge. As the weather outside continued to be cold and stormy, our room at Herdwick was warm and made us feel like real guests, 21st or 15th century. There was an en suite bathroom with an amazing shower, and a tv in the room. There were also thoughtful touches like chocolates and tea. Our dog immediately felt comfortable on the comfy carpet. We stayed in and had dinner in the pub portion. My fiancé had an amazing pie but more importantly-- I had a steak. I'd never craved anything so much in my life, after a long day of hiking. I had already had an amazing Merlot and was ready for some true, honest, medium rare steak. I could not have asked for a more perfect meal. The steak came exactly as ordered-- simply plated, generous portion, with chips and mushrooms and heaven somewhere in there. Afterward, my fiancé and I ordered sticky toffee pudding and enjoyed while our pup warmed by the fire. It tasted a lot like what I imagine heaven tastes like. I had an Irish Coffee to warm up, which was HOME MADE and incredibly delicious. Chris and his partner were very hospitable, greeting us and arranging breakfast. The bed was so comfortable, we barely moved all night. The next morning, we were treated to a full English breakfast alongside a continental buffet with cereals and orange juice. The sausage was insanely fresh, our crumpets adorable bunny shaped, and the fried toast crisp and sweet. However, the black pudding was the standout. It was the best black pudding I have ever had in my entire life. If you are looking around the Lake District for an amazing, quiet place to rest your head, CHOOSE HERDWICK. Reasonably priced, these hosts will absolutely spoil you. It's quiet, it's homey, and it only takes you one night to feel part of the family.

This is a charming, classic-looking pub in the middle of nowhere! It's warm and comfortable, and…read morethe service was some of the friendliest we've had. The other diners as well, most of them were walkers and a few even had dogs with them! It's a great place to have a pint and strike up a conversation with a stranger. We had a relaxed dinner here on a Monday evening. Their basic pub food options are pretty affordable, but anything with red meat or fish resulted in quite a significant price jump. They had a long list of specials, but I chose off the main menu - the steamed fillet of salmon stuffed with spinach, and served with a onion, tomato, basil, and prawn salsa with a side of linguine pasta. While everything certainly tasted fresh and well-cooked, there wasn't really a lot of flavor to the dish. I was admittedly a bit confused about the "salsa" as it was really like a prawn salad and I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be eaten with the salmon or as a side dish, rather an unusual condiment! A tasty dish, but lacking in inspiration. We had a few desserts as well, I remember in particular enjoying the raspberry cheesecake, but the overall impression was still that there wasn't a lot of creativity in the kitchen, especially for the cost. Still, they have a lovely atmosphere, and it's very pleasant to spend an evening there. I just think what comes out of the kitchen is fairly average, which is fine as it's just a pub, but those who are looking for a really special meal may not find it here - although the truly wonderful staff makes it worth a visit anyway.

Even a power outage does not faze them!…read more We spent two great nights here last week. We ate in the bar/restaurant both nights for dinner and in the dining room for breakfast and hung out a little in the bar. Three things: 1) Thanks for understanding food allergies and having gluten-free bread - amazing! 2) Please thank the gentleman on the second bar stool from the right for recommending a trip to the distillery on Bassenthwaite, he got that right (even though he'd never been there himself!) 3) Thank you (publicity shy) Gill, for being so great and even providing us with a candlelit breakfast when lightning took out the power on the day we left. You rock. OK, four things: 4) We ate in the pub on our second (and last) night because the first night was so good! The food here is seriously good, It's a long way from Los Angeles to Keswick, but the next time we can make an excuse to come and stay here, we're all over that!
