Gourmet pub grub…read more This is a pub, restaurant and inn rolled into one. We had dinner in the pub as it's dog friendly but it's the same menu as the restaurant. All the food is sourced locally, with the meat and veg coming from the attached estate, Askham Hall. The menu is a little bit foodie fancy, but it does it very well without getting carried away and losing sight of making the customer happy. For example the "cocoa puffs" on my incredbly tender venison, puffs of chocolate potato that just worked. My sister-in-law had puffs of crackling with her pork that were deliciously light but with all the flavour of crackling. I had a delicious twice baked cheese souffle to start that melted in my mouth like the best omelette ever. It would make perfect winter comfort food. My pudding was apple cheesecake with lavender meringue, salted caramel and apple sorbet. The flavours were amazing and very well balanced. Even the salted caramel which I don't generally rate that highly. I wanted to go back for lunch the next day. Sadly it's not cheap so I would have needed a special offer to justify it. The service was very helpful and pleasant.

The proprietor said: we have some good local pubs, but there's a world class (well, he used some other British phrase that I can't recall) restaurant in Penrith. So we went. Like I said: wow. Locally sourced meat, game (watch for buckshot) and vegetables. We had rabbit pate and a tomato "tart" for appetizers, venison and pork loin for mains, fig tart for dessert. Couldn't be better. And the beer? Out of this world. Nothing like British bitter from the cask.
