Real-world self-defense is CLEARLY a passion for all the instructors here. I appreciate when the…read moreinstructor says that he's not teaching us "THE WAY," he's teaching us "A WAY." Everyone's body and skills are so different, and these instructors fully embrace that. Their goal in Krav Maga is not to teach us pretty kicks and impressive moves - their goal is to make sure we get home to our loved ones safely. It is all about developing your mindset, muscle memory, and instincts so that, when it really counts, you avoid the deer-in-headlights effect. Even as a beginner, I feel like I walk around my community in Manassas with more confidence and awareness and have learned how to reduce my chances of being a victim in the first place. If for some reason you don't feel like you have the time to commit to classes, I HIGHLY recommend you check out their monthly seminars! Women's Self Defense, Edged Weapon Defense, Car Jacking Defense, and the list goes on!! After watching many of the kid's classes, I love what I see! They're teaching kids how to use their voice, how to stand up for themselves and when it is appropriate to take physical action.

I left feeling so much more confident in protecting myself. I had so much fun I'm going to sign up for the adult class! Highly recommend for adults and especially kids - the tactics you learn could save your life and it was interactive and super fun great workout on top of it as icing on the cake DEFINITELY at least go once to experience it yourself you won't be disappointed!

Took my 5- and 8-year-old to Six Blades Jiu Jitsu Nova for a free trial. The environment is…read moreno-nonsense and clearly built around serious training-- which as an Army veteran is something I personally respect and felt at home in, especially given the military-style banter. That said, I didn't find the tone ideal for younger kids. There was language and phrasing ("kick his ass!") that I didn't feel was appropriate for children, and I was disappointed by comments made toward boys being beaten by girls ("You'll walk home if you lose to a girl")--not exactly the message I want either of my kids internalizing. The instructors are absolutely skilled and committed, but they treat the kids like mini adults, which may work for some families, but not ours. We ended up going with another gym that's more youth-focused, closer to home, and offers more affordable memberships with military and family discounts. I think Six Blades would be great for adult students or older teens looking for high-level instruction, but it just wasn't the right fit for our young kids. Edited for further context: For further context, what the owner describes as "jovial" banter included quotes from coaches during the kids' training session: * "Kick his ass!" * "Whoop his ass!" * "You better not lose to a girl!" * "If you lose to a girl, you're walking home!" * "Pay attention, dammit!" "Banter" implies the kids could respond with witty comebacks--but what would they realistically say to grown men in a position of authority? They simply complied. That said, I truly appreciate the owner's openness to constructive feedback. It makes me feel more confident in my decision as a parent. For now, we'll stick with the more "budget" and kid-friendly option -- at least until my children are old enough to clap back at demeaning and misogynistic comments with confidence and humor that comes with maturity.

This is an outstanding school and I am extremely happy I found it…read more My health is really what drove me to try this place out. As I got older, I started developing back problems. I did a ton of research on ways to strengthen my core, and Kung Fu repeatedly came up as a recommendation. Reviews like the ones here helped guide me to the Jow Ga Shaolin Institute. I was hesitant to take on Kung Fu as a middle aged adult. I had always considered martial arts as a younger person's sport and didn't want to be the older new guy in a sea of 12-15 year olds. My experiences at JGSI have totally eliminated that misconception. The classes are diverse in age and experience levels. The instructors are patient and adjust their teachings to the individual they're working with. The other students are warm, welcoming and extremely supportive. The classes themselves are challenging, but rewarding. They focus on concentration, stability, meditation, and strength with styles rooted in both traditional Northern and Southern forms. The school is well rounded and teaches multiple styles and solid technique, as well as real life applications of the forms. They also stay true to the culture of Kung Fu and support the history and tradition that has made this art form so great. It doesn't matter if you are looking for self-defense or exercise, discipline or focus, you can find each of those and more at the Jow Ga Shaolin Institute.

Best decision we made for our son!!!…read more My son has been coming to Mohammed Tae Kwon Do every single week for the past three years, and he started when he was only 2.5 years old! At that age, it's hard to imagine a child sticking with something consistently . . . but he absolutely LOVES it. Coach Mohammed Dajani is truly exceptional. He is not just an instructor, he is a role model. His patience, discipline, warmth, and ability to connect with young children is remarkable. He knows how to push them just enough while building them up at the same time. Over the past three years, we've seen our son grow in: * Confidence * Focus * Respect and manners * Physical coordination * Resilience Everything martial arts is supposed to stand for, Coach Mohammed embodies and teaches. The structure of the program is thoughtful. The environment is positive and disciplined without ever being harsh. The kids genuinely enjoy being there, and as a parent, that means everything. We are incredibly grateful to have found this school. I recommend Mohammed Tae Kwon Do without hesitation, and we fully expect to be part of this community for the next 10-20 years. Thank you, Coach Mohammed, for the impact you're making.
