How can I not give TROSA Thrift Store of Durham five stars? They were able to do what Habitat for Humanity ReStore (Durham) and the Durham Rescue Mission could not: They picked up our furniture donation from the third floor of our apartment building without an elevator. The other places either required an elevator or the furniture be moved to the ground floor. Not only that, but the guys from TROSA, Quentin R and Christian, showed up on time and worked efficiently. Also, TROSA's Donations Coordinator, Cheryl Rogers, was great to work with. Everything was taken care of without any hiccups. The lady I spoke to at Durham Rescue Mission referred me to TROSA. I had never heard of TROSA until that point in time. Shortly thereafter, I learned that my wife's clinic regularly treats patients from TROSA and my mom has donated furniture to TROSA's Winston-Salem thrift store. TROSA stands for Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers. Both Quentin and Christian came up through the TROSA program. If I recall correctly from my conversation with Christian, TROSA helped get them back on their feet. Quentin is older and I believe a graduate who is now a manager. Both guys were nice and did really hard work. They helped move the following for us: 1 office desk 1 office chair 2 loveseats with pillows 1 lounge chair with cushions 1 small table set (3 tables in 1) 1 fold-up shelf (3 tier) ------------------------------ 7 items total The office desk was old, but in good condition, and super heavy. As soon as they saw it, Quentin said it was going to be "fun." They wrapped it in plastic to protect it before moving it. I was curious how they were going to move it. They didn't wear gloves or use a hand truck. They simply used their bare hands and raw strength, plus some moving blankets to help slide the desk on the second floor of the stairwell. I was really impressed. Christian took most of the weight, being the guy on bottom. It wasn't an easy task. Afterwards, Quentin and Christian told me the desk wasn't that bad. They've had to move much worse, like pianos. Just an incredible job by those two. It took them about 40 minutes to haul everything away. Quentin ran the show. He and Christian were able to find our apartment door without having to call and ask where to go (a lot of delivery drivers got lost, but not these guys). They were uniformed in light blue TROSA T-shirts and black pants/shorts. While moving the items, Quentin had me fill out a Donation Pickup Form that listed everything I donated with an estimated value. At the end, all three of us signed it. I received a copy of the form which serves as a receipt for an income tax deduction. Also, there was a place on the form where I could write in a tip, which served as an additional donation. I tipped $35 in cash. The pickup itself was free. Beforehand, I coordinated with Cheryl over the phone and via email. We handled the list of furniture items to be donated and the scheduling and logistics of the donation itself. I was located in Chapel Hill and the first stop (11:00am) in Chapel Hill on Quentin and Christian's route that day, a Tuesday. You can call or email TROSA to get the process started. I emailed. Cheryl called me within one business day and was able to get me scheduled as soon as 13 days out, which ended up working out perfectly for us. Book early. One thing Cheryl asked me for was emailed pictures of everything I wanted to donate. She then called me again a couple days later to confirm the pickup appointment and details like parking, how many stairs and landings, etc. TROSA is thorough. Quentin and Christian arrived in a large marked TROSA truck. Coincidentally, I noticed a TROSA truck at our same apartment complex less than two weeks prior to this pickup. read more

This is my absolute favorite local place to shop when I want to change up my furnitire and decor! My go to for up cycling and finding the right pieces at the right time. Other local thrift stores don't compare. This place always puts out the best worthwhile items. And the staff is amazing. Attentive and friendly. They are working with the program for consistent recovery and it shows. Just a great group of overcomes pushing through for their best life. Oh, and their donation zone is so easy. Drive up to the front, get the guys to lend a hand, and drop off! Also, they pick up for donation (upon approval) so send things you would want to upcycle and buy. They also deliver large pieces with a fee based on your distance from the store. Truly such an easy and professional experience. Love them. read more

Visited this store today as "we have some really nice couches in right now but no photos or videos" was reported to me vía phone call before I decided to visit. Yes there was a warehouse amount of stuff to see. I'm not posting the video in deference to the individuals that walked in view. Depending on what you are looking for, what budget and how much work you're willing to put in especially if considering bringing in something in a clean/healthy home environment. Personally sitting on the couches to try out as suggested felt not just unclean and a couple uncomfortable with worn out springs but the fabric downright dirty. Reupholstering some of the Victorian gems would be a gorgeous idea with a decorating budget. The ideal tea book shop idea with some thorough shampooing might be an option on the fabric couches and chairs. I did not check which had zippered removable covers for washing. End tables and dining tables could be refinished or cleaned as is for some boho vibe pieces as well as the armoires which had decent prices. There were an only a couple of lamps worth a second look. All around $5 each but missing the shade and attaching lamp bracket. Decent enough prices on desks and bookshelves. Not what I was looking for but tons of filing cabinets, quality vintage bedroom dressers and very decent prices on fairly new and different sized bed frames. I would definitely stay away from a used mattress, plan on putting in a few days shampooing on anything upholstered. I noticed a lot of the furniture was dark and overstuffed heavy type furniture for seating needing more space than a small apartment living room. Overall worth a peek if you're in need or willing to put muscle effort into cleaning your good find and are in the neighborhood. I recommend taking a video if you're not yet ready to purchase to think on when you leave. Not much else remarkable to see in the mall due to most empty storefronts but do try out the food at the local Mexican restaurant a few doors down. Truly authentic style. read more

TROSA Thrift Store is the place to look for hidden Durham Treasures. We found a small couch/bed that was in good condition and perfect for our teenager hangout room. The floor people were helpful and great with talking about our options in getting the couch home. We opted for the TROSA delivery service and it was a great value. The couch and the delivery fee all came in under $100. This was a tremendous value in todays economy. The delivery team (Matt K. & Rob S.) were awesome they showed up. Greeted us and took a look at where we needed the couch placed. They figured out a path and BOOM got it in the house in no time. The value of the delivery and the value of the items was perfect. Now that the demand for records is greater than cds, it is tough to find one new record in the joint. Marilyn, the manager, is wonderful and I have known her for several years. Primarily went to look for a dresser but there were only three and they were extremely expensive for used items $139.99 for most. (I can get a new one on Amazon for less). Other items were beautiful and antique but they were not thrift store prices either. That being said they also had a lot of household items and those were priced well so that's where the stars are showing most. Overall a bit disappointed that their prices were so high but they have a huge amount of furniture. Would I be back? Maybe if I were looking for a bakers rack or chairs but not for much else. They also had carpets. It's still worth a visit if you're nearby. Service was nice but there was a bit of a line. Clean area and big store. read more

Manager very rude. Items damaged from their loaders and items left that they forgot to load bring out to be loaded left at store. Didn't find out until I drove 45 min. Dinning set that I purchased wasn't able to be disassembled due to rust and condition of bolts. Wasn't aware of this before I purchased. Table top was glass so it probably wouldn't make it that far assembled on back of a truck. I asked for refund on items left at store and the dinning set. They refused. No refund policy???? Wow. The items never left the store. I asked for a store credit, refused that also. I have spent thousands of dollars to this place helping clients who need furniture. These expenses came from my personal money. I shopped here because I support the cause and as a Mental Health And Substance Abuse Professional I have several clients as I'm trying to aide in their recovery. I have never experienced this level of unprofessionalism by a few of the loading crew and one of the managers (Marilyn) something like that. Sarcastic and nonchalant about the experience and the amount of money I had spent in 24 hours. I furnished an entire apartment $600! I know several organizations and individuals who donated there also to support the cause. I don't think ppl would donate as much if they knew how they price gauge, damage inventory after sold and keep the money from customers refusing refund, store credits, or even taking responsibility. No apology was ever given. Smh. I will take the lost but I will NEVER spend another dollar there. I will definitely share my experience with the donators that I am acquainted with. One of my favorite thrift stores in Raleigh/Durham area. The store is huge and the staff I've interacted with are all super nice! Lots of furniture, clothes, lamps and other knickknacks throughout the store. Prices are definitely reasonable for the pieces that are there. Last time I went after Christmas it was a little picked through but it's the time of year likely. I like going here because it's not all mass produced goods that people donated there's fun one of kind pieces which are fun to find here. read more

Seriously if you're starting a business and need office furniture this is definitely the place to get desks, desk chairs cabinets, office cubicle systems. Glassware housewares decor galore, little clothes and little bit of toys and books. However, most of the ceramics glassware porcelains mugs dishes etc are chipped or broken and the other household stuff is just dirty. I know it's thrift but it's just plain dirty. There is a TROSA thrift store closer to our home in South Durham that we frequent but this location had won a local readers choice survey for used clothing so we decided to check it out. Actually, the clothing selection at our nearby store was better in variety and quality. This location did seem to have more furniture and large items, but we'll stick to the one closer to use for used clothing. It was busy on a Saturday and had plenty of shoppers, but we're fine with the one near us. read more

Purchased a large electronic item from this store. The 'sales person' assured me all of the equipment is tested before being placed on the floor. Once I got the item home, noticed the plug was not a normal plug and did not fit in a normal outlet. Once I FOUND an adapter plug and plugged it up, the item in fact DID NOT WORK, which let me know they did not test the item like the man stated. When I called to ask questions about the situation, the manager was not very nice. How disappointing. Here we are supporting a business thinking they are doing great things but they are lying to our faces for purchases. I know I'm only 1 person, but I will no longer be taking them my donations, neither will I shop there again. read more

My husband was just treated very poorly in the N. Roxboro St. location of TROSA. He was accused of theft, which he absolutely did not commit, and the staff there mistook him for someone else who had been banned from the store. When he told the employees that he was absolutely not the man in question, they continued to mistreat him and asked him not to return to the store. They could not produce video evidence of this suppose theft, nor did they attempt to confirm that he was not the banned individual in question. They were very rude, which is highly offensive, especially in light of the fact that we've donated to TROSA in the past and had a positive view of their role in the community. However, if this is the way they treat their customers, by racially profiling them, then we will not return to the store and we will continue to issue this word of caution to everyone we know if they consider using TROSA's moving services, or anything else that they offer. We will no longer shop at TROSA nor make future donations. The employees did not contact the manager to try to rectify the situation and were quite hostile. We will most definitely be contacting TROSA's board about this offense as well. So, if you consider shopping here, please be aware of the awful treatment that they have shown towards certain members of their client constituency. If I could give them negative stars, I would do so. read more

Trosa is a really great thrift store with an important social mission to help people struggling with substance abuse disorders. After I moved off-campus to a new apartment and needed to start from scratch furniture-wise, Trosa saved me tons of money. I basically sourced over half of my furniture from here. They have some amazing pieces (a gorgeous shabby chic rocking chair in faded lavender, a Brutalist poured concrete console table, a soaring 7-foot bookshelf of my dreams) at great prices, not to mention a very reasonably priced and reliable delivery service. I've had multiple items delivered to me and the workers are always on time, communicative, and professional. They also have a large selection of books, tableware, clothes, and miscellaneous "treasures." I go fairly often to see if there are any fun books, but their furniture selection is where they shine. read more

I absolutely love TROSA. I love the mission, connecting people with resources for a healthier and happier life is a beautiful thing. Their selection is also AMAZING. We got our awesome couch, showed below, for $180 plus delivery! For a reasonable delivery fee (based on distance), they brought everything up to my third floor apartment and it was ready to use. We also bought an antique dresser and we only had to pay for one delivery fee (up to 3 items!). This is an okay thrift store, the furniture (i.e. couches and chairs) seem to be in good condition, and they are not priced like they are gold. I did see some grandfather clocks that were way overpriced considering the condition they were in (the works were missing parts, hands missing, pendulum missing on one, etc.). Books and albums (Vinyl, CD's) seem to be priced reasonably. If you're looking to put together a set of golf clubs, this is definitely worth the trip - nice brand name clubs priced very very low. I browsed through the clothing section and decided that was not for me. I think I'd rather shop at goodwill for clothes. read more

Today was the first day for their Annual Tent Sale! For $5 you can fill up a bag with as much clothing that would fit! I got their right at 10:07am. The Tent opened up at 10am. When I walked in the Tent was PACKED! Everyone was steady trying to stuff their bags with as much as they could! The staff were super friendly inside and outside! Inside a gentleman named Chris helped me when trying to choose a couch and kitchen table! After finding the ones I wanted he worked out an AMAZING deal where I was able to get a kitchen table with 4 sturdy chairs, a full size couch and loveseat with matching ottoman all for less than $200! I must say I am SO glad I went to Trosa today!!! read more

This place has an amazing amount of good, clean furniture. It's like walking into an American Furniture Warehouse but for second hand. I scouted out tv armoires, desks and office chairs. I found one for $20 that looked almost brand new. Great way to save some money as I was looking at replacing a $200 company paid chair. They have an impressive number of pianos and even a 1935 Grand piano at $8,000. It's a great way to furnish an apartment on the cheap but not embarrassing dumpster finds. Even the more "well to do" shopper might be surprised at the solid wood furniture and smattering of antiques. The clothes and shoes are where the record scratches to a halt. They are in pretty bad shape and should go to the bins section. Admittedly the prices are low though the color coded tags add confusion to the pricing as there is no legend to consult. The posted signs reveal only the starting price so you may be pleasantly surprised when you check out that your total is lower than you estimated. They have clean bathrooms at the front which is convenient. I've been to a number of thrifts where they do not have restrooms for customers. If you like to trash public restrooms and routinely cause plumbing issues just to be a jerk, it's your fault we can't have nice things. Store is staffed with individuals who are a part of their residential program for substance abuse. We've used them a number of times for their moving services. The lady at checkout (Joann M) was delightful and I was pleased with the service. A bit of a trek for me from Carrboro with traffic and road conditions on these side streets being what they are. Fairly close to Durham museum of nature and science. read more

I have been admittedly spoiled by excellent thrift stores in other places (LA, NYC). Trosa is big but I find that a lot of the items when I go on the weekend are junky and NOT in good condition (kitchenware in particular--flaking and deeply scratched nonstick pans, warped baking sheets, etc.). I've had a bit better luck with women's clothing but finding something in decent condition that isn't dowdy is rough and the men's selection is even more limited. I have purchased a few things here: handmade child cup & bowl ceramic set, a soccer scarf, coin purse, and 8 Fiestaware mugs. read more

I can't believe I've never been into the Trosa Thrift Store before! The place is massive, all indoors and with a huge variety of items, including a custom framing department (that's not a typical thrift store find!) They have a huge selection of furniture, clothes, household goods and I noticed a lot of close-out items. The store is well organized and they even have displays throughout (dinning room tables with rugs and place settings--helps customers envision items in their own home). This location also has a donation center and the customer service is on point. I'll definitely keep Trosa Thrift Store on my "go-to" thrift store list. read more
