Tropical Ravine is the jewel in the crown of Botanic Gardens having gone through a recent extensive £3.8 million refurbishment, thanks to funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, Belfast City Council and Friends of Botanic Gardens. A remarkable building with energy efficient heat and humidity systems, in which a blending of historic and modern has been perfectly achieved. It manages to fully retain Victorian elements and character yet simultaneously feel state-of-the-art. You experience a stark contrast when stepping out of Belfast's cool climate and into this epic jungle-atmosphere filled with green foliage, exotic flower species, steam and heat. There's a waterfall, impressive overhead watering system, triple glazed windows and a tank of tropical fish including vegetarian piranhas!
Free guided tours are available, bookable in advance via Belfast City Council website. I attended such a tour on 22 August 2018. Our guide Adrienne was excellent, walking us around the Ravine and into the normally restricted lower level Tropical Zone, whilst telling us about the history of the greenhouse and rare plants, some of which are over 150 years old. A first-rate, informative and entertaining tour. read more
