First introduced to the camp via neighbors back in the late 90's I was always curious about this place that local Mainers excitedly went away to for a month. When we moved from Maine to New York we wanted our two youngest to have an opportunity to explore the out of doors that their older siblings had growing up in Maine. We enrolled them in kohut and for the following 8 years watched as each summer they grew, tried new things, unplugged and fell in love with their kohut family. There are fewer more satisfying feelings of comfort with a decision, than when you drop your child off at camp and they bolt away, running into the arms of favorite counselors and friends from previous seasons. I have the pleasure of saying that one of my kids actually was a counselor for a summer, while his two siblings attended Kohut, experiencing Kohut from the "the other side". One of my favorite parts of Kohut is that kids have an opportunity to try things that maybe they wouldn't dare attempt in their everyday lives. My son developed an interest and talent for fencing, and became interested in the guitar, both while at Kohut. He has taken these experiences to higher levels, but gained that initial confidence while at camp. I'll never forget those first two summers, picking up the kids, and having them regale us with stories and songs about their favorite moments. This past summer was our last at Kohut, and I found myself tearing up as I picked up my now nearly six foot tall son, who remained in my eyes that 7 year old, in his kohut shirt standing beneath the pines. I would highly recommend Kamp Kohut to anyone considering a summer camp.

The energy is infectious and they do a really good of communicating with parents. Bottom line: You get what you pay for and we got a lot of value for our money here. We feel extremely lucky to have the ability to send our daughter here. I know it's not for everyone as camp is expensive but they are providing 24/7 care, meals and extras. Thank you Laurel South for making this experience wonderful!

The group of friends he made over the years has already had 2 mini-reunions since returning home just 2 months ago. He has made friends for life from around the world. Our youngest is already counting the days left before next summer, which will be his 5th consecutive summer. The camp itself is spectacular. It's on a picturesque lake. The choices for activities are endless and include: sailing, water skiing, kayaking, archery, rocket making, gymnastics, cooking, drawing, swimming, fishing, tennis, soccer, baseball, and so many more. The grounds are beautifully maintained. Roger and Dagni take care of each child as though s/he was one of their own. Because the camp has such a stellar reputation, Roger and Dagni have their pick of counselors to hire. The counselors are excellent with kids, have extensive knowledge and experience with their skills, and come from all over the globe. Many work as coaches at schools during the school year. Our kids rave about the food and constantly tell us that we need to get the recipes from camp. There are chaperoned flights from many major US cities making travel to/from camp worry-free for parents. We also love that the camp offers 2 independent, 4-week sessions. The campers start and end each session with the same group of kids. The consistency of having the same kids at camp from start to finish has allowed our kids to form strong friendships and really feel part of the Laurel South family. If only adults could be campers!

You know something is right with a camp when your son or daughter doesn't want to leave , and beginning in November , goes on a campaign to go back/ extend the time there next year/ asks for parents written pledge that she will surely go back if she gets all goods grades.... excitement about this camp's next session begins literally just as the camp session ends!our daughter had only the best experience with this camp. She keeps saying that this camp is the only things she keeps on thinking about year round. The diversity of the children she met there and friendships she formed are invaluable. Activities are prime, starting from water activities on the beautiful lake, such as her favorite, sailing, to club sports, pottery, and rock climbing. Camp also offers a variety of day trips to keep things fun, and evening activities such as campfire, shows, and story times. Food is another reason why I feel so comfortable with this camp. My daughter is a very picky eater but she always finds something good there and has never complained of "food boredom". Flavor and quality of choices is really high. Lastly, the management at the camp is personable , understands, and truly knows and remembers your child especially once they become a return camper. They treat each child as an individual , and this is priceless. I highly recommend this camp to anyone wanting to experience media free, unburdened summer experience for their child or teen. They will never even notice that cell phone/ iPad was kept away the whole time!

Oh, and the best is no ipads, no iphone or computer games. It's friendship, building a love of the outdoors and trying new things.

The tent & cabin were both very clean & comfortable. The campground community bath house (when staying in a tent or cabin w/out bathroom) was also kept clean. The cabins could use a bit more privacy - all the huge, gorgeous, picturesque windows are problematic as (particularly in the winter) there's several other cabins w/full view into your windows. It would be nice if it was more of a private / woods view than looking into other cabins. That said, my daughter & I enjoyed our time and have been repeat customers. Would give it 4.5 stars (Yelp doesn't give half star option, but I needed to account for the lack of privacy in several of the cabins in the area we were in.). Overall a great option & we'll likely be back!

What to do in Freeport? VISIT THE DESERT!…read more This has been on my list for years and it did not disappoint. I kinda found it odd to pay $21 to explore the dunes but here's what we got for the price: - unlimited train rides - Ability to wander the desert - Executed their scavenger hunt - the kids rode a massive slide (unlimited) - we explored a fair/troll maze - dug for fossils - visited an old gas station - walked through an old home - unique playground This place isn't just the desert (and I don't mean the mini golf.) It's a little hidden wonder that offer families things to do. My kids (4 and 13) were fully immersed in the experience. The oldest was keeping the youngest involved in the scavenger hunt which he loved looking for the 'red' guy. The hands on portions fully captivated them. I was worried the walking might be a lot for the little guy but he didn't complain not once. It was explorative and interesting. Keep in mind, on hot days I bet you feel it! Bring sunblock, wear hats, closed toed shoes are best and water. Also, the big blue slide in the rear of the desert shoots little ones out like a cannon! I thought he broke his arm but he was ok! You've been warned.
