We decided to stop in Dandrige overnight and catch some zzzs before making the final leg the following day. It was the 4th of July and we came across the Dandridge dock while searching for some dinner. We got out to take a look and wow, the view of Douglas Lake was so beautiful that evening. It has a long walkway and at the end of it, there are Adirondack chairs for people to sit on. There were several people taking their boats out or coming in, families fishing, and other people like ourselves taking in the view. Definitely worth taking a few minutes to take a peek when staying in or around Dandridge or simply passing through. Stay safe, Friends!

The Sinks is a lovely waterfall along the river. There is a small parking lot with about a dozen spaces where we found parking. An observation area is a short walk from parking. A sign describes the area and that the falls were manmade. During the late 1800's the river was used to transport logs/timber to the nearby town of Elkmont. After a storm, flood waters caused a jam in the river. Dynamite was used to restore water flow. The blast resulted in a twist in the river and creation of the waterfall. A set of stone steps leads up a hill, offering lovey views of the falls. There are dozens of waterfalls in the Park. Sinks is one of the few that is drivable, which is great for people that cannot hike. I picked up a Waterfalls map at the visitor center that I found interesting and informative. Parking passes are required to park in the lot. There are no amenities at the falls. Plan 15-30 minutes for a stop and photos.

Driving north of SR-70 (Asheville Highway), I crossed the bridge and my eye was drawn to the dam to…read morethe east. Thankfully, there is a turnoff and I was able to get a proper look at the dam. A little further, a road turns to the right and it curves back under the dam and leads down to the riverside. A few pickup trucks were parked as people are using the dam for some intense fishing. The dam was built by the Tennessee Eastern Electric Company in 1912-1913 and generates hydroelectricity. It was later purchased by the Tennessee Valley Authority who improved it to the point where it was able to generate 10,640 kilowatts of electricity. Unfortunately, the area became too blocked with sediment and the generators were taken offline in 1972. The dam and reservoir are now used for flood control and recreation. We met him for a 4 hour adventure and start to finish, it was completely seamless. He has everything taken care of. All you have to do is show up and fish. He takes care of all of the equipment, bait, lures, and the boat. He even has snacks and drinks. He knows the river well and knows the right places to fish, which changes with the season, time of day, and weather. He just knows. He's like a fish whisperer. I kid you not, within 5 minutes of my first cast, I hooked a fish. It had been some time since I had been fishing and Jay was patient and explained casting easily. We used live bait and Jay even took care of baiting my line because that's what he does! We caught fish after fish after fish and he explained what each type was. Our largest catch (not my own) was over 5 lbs and 22" long. That's a big fish! In between each spot, we were chauffered around the river in his custom built boat. We saw the sights and were reminded how incredible the Great Smoky Mountains really are. I highly recommend booking an Adventure with Jay.

Yes, it does add up, but I've never paid over $30-$40 for a bunch of fish, cleaned and iced! That's not bad to supply a large fish fry with fresh mountain trout. I read another review by hikers who claimed the owner "terrified them" with his mean ole rudeness and his barking dog. Get a life! These folks are awesome.

It is also paved which was great as well. I did not get to finish the entire walk because I was not aware how far of a walk the entire path was. I also have dogs that are 11 and 12 so they cannot go more than 2 miles usually. I did however just turn around when it felt like a good stopping point and it was easy to do so. I very much enjoyed this walk and the views that come with it. If I'm ever in the area again I would definitely come back to this walking trail. There are also plenty of places to park along the trail.

Parking is probably the trickiest part since the dedicated parking lot is quite small and maxes out at around half a dozen vehicles. We ended up touring the bird sanctuary first and then starting the perimeter trail from there. There's a nice amount of benches around the lake, a patch of wildflowers, and a section of the trail is just roadside sidewalk. A popular lake trail for joggers but not overcrowded.

Halfway through the trail, you'll be assaulted by the lake warden / bully. He will be deliberately obtuse and will say almost anything short of claiming he has the power to arrest you (he doesn't), to stop you continuing on the second half of the trail. He called me an idiot for wanting to walk down Merrimon (it's public property), saying it was nearly a guarantee that I would be hit by a car if I walked in the bike lane. He very clearly gets a hard-on from making people turn around. He'll remind you a couple of times that he is filming the interaction you're having. I called him a hyper-aggressive asshole and went on my way. I won't be returning to this trail, and as a local, I'm ashamed that the rich people who live by that lake haven't hired someone who isn't a total creep. I would give this experience a 1 star, but the trail was pretty. :(

Then did a little hikin. Its beautiful with the Fall colors, of course even more pretty than normal. It's easy to get off the highway there's a whole rest area (no facilities) where you can leave your car for a few minutes.
