After all the years I'd lived in Tucson, all the times I parked in front of this church to fetch coffee at The Epic over the years (ahem, decades) and admired the lovely architecture from outside, I finally found, nay, TOOK the opportunity to attend a service.
I am in town for my Sunnyside High School reunion. I hit The Epic Cafe nearly every time I have cause to visit the Old Pueblo. Opportune and cause are now nearly non-existent--within the past three years I've lost both great uncle and aunt, plus I've lost two of my old spinster friends.
Nonetheless, I'm drawn to this city with it's feel of intimacy despite its sprawl--kind'a like how Fayetteville has WAY outgrown itself.
As I mentioned, I've admired the architecture of this church for decades, and with its location it serves the local student population. The early service is held in the small chapel, I was almost disappointed. Yet, the small intimacy does not mean it is an afterthought. The room is furnished with a piano and a pipe organ(!!!). The pianist/organist plays a lovely blend of tunes.
Today's WORD covered the time the disbelievers tried to trip the Christ with the question of paying taxes. I enjoyed how the pastor presented the message, clarifying and explaining the background for the story.
So, the close proximity to marvelous coffee/breakfast baked goods, parking, my hotel (where the reunion was held), contributes to the five stars, as does the lovely setting/architecture, and most importantly the message, gracious and warm congregation (did I mention how I was greeted by the pastor, pianist, and one deacon asked to hug me because of my singing?) who sat next to me to make the guest feel welcome...all justify five stars.
Do you seek welcome arms? Do you seek clear presentation of The Message? Do you seek 'no pretense?' Do you seek low pressure? Do you seek Christ? I recommend this church. read more
