    Bus 35
    Elizabeth G.

Riding TriMet downtown was a breeze. I was going to the Portland Art Museum and didn't feel like playing the parking space game. Both of my bus stops were clean and safe... no questionable potential riders mulling around either of them. I guess it depends on where you are going. I was on Bus 35 Early afternoon there weren't too many riders and not too many stops. Since the bus is high, I could get a good view of the Willamette River. I decided to take the 4:10pm bus back home before rush hour. The bus had some commuters but there were still many open seats. Traffic was already heavy, but Bus 35 took a few Bus Only Routes, bypassing some of the traffic. The Sellwood Bridge was backed up, as expected, but I wasn't driving. It was nice to be able to relax and enjoy the view. I highly recommend taking TriMet downtown.

On our way to the airport!

Trimet has always being our transportation medium from the airport to our hotel and vise versa. It's way cheaper than Lyft or uber. For only $2.50, you can use this transportation for two hours. The trimet is always clean and in all honesty, very safe. Transit police make sure you are safe and protected. There's also cameras and a lot of people use it. I am grateful that regardless of all the community changes in Portland, I can still trust Trimet for my transportation needs.

I have only used the Max light rail service, but there was never a long wait and it was nice leaving the driving to someone else. It gave me a chance to enjoy the city skyline. I purchased a five dollar all day pass, which is basically the same price as a round trip ticket from anywhere. Scan your card before boarding at any platform.

Great transit service no complaints. Hire more fare inspectors though we could use more security on board.

It's a quick ride, but don't let that fool you. The moment that cabin lifts off, you're floating over the freeway, climbing straight up the hill like you've somehow cheated gravity. And when you hit that height, get your camera ready because the views don't ease in they hit you all at once. The river stretches out, the city stacks itself in layers, and on a clear day it feels like you can see half of Portland laid out below you. Now let me tell you about those towers. Nobody prepares you for that part. You're cruising along thinking this is smooth and peaceful, maybe even getting a little too confident, and then the tram rolls over one of those support towers and suddenly this thing pitches and rocks and gives a little bounce like it just remembered it's hanging from a wire. I watched a grown man go from leaning cool against the glass to grabbing the rail like it owed him money. I'm not saying I did the same thing, but if there were security cameras, I hope they enjoyed the show. It feels like you're dangling from a high wire in the sky, and for a split second you start making life decisions and promises you have no intention of keeping once your feet are back on the ground. I don't even know what the ticket runs these days, but even if it's around ten bucks, it's money well spent. There's also that move people talk about catch a bus up near Washington Park or the zoo, hike your way through the trails, and ride the tram down. Hard to argue with that kind of finish. Sure, it technically drops you off at a hospital, which isn't exactly a tourist destination, but honestly that almost adds to the charm. It's practical, a little strange, and somehow still one of the cooler quick things you can do. Five stars. If you're nearby and not doing anything, go take the ride. Just know that when that cabin hits those towers and starts swaying around, you might discover a whole new level of respect for gravity and your own grip strength.

And I've been using it since about the early 1990s when it became the hub for the blue and red lines on their westbound and eastbound journeys. And in some ways there's really not much to review. You get on the train and off the train, buy tickets or tap your Hop pass, and cruise off more or less to work or head home. Biut that's the short view. The long view reveals so much more. To my mind, this transit center is at the top of the heap because it is one of many "pillars" that holds Pioneer Courthouse Square, Portland's crown jewel and living room, together and makes sense of Downtown Portland. It's also a major reason why so many people have moved to Portland. Where else can you jump off the train and: buy coffee and treats, make travel plans and buy bus tickets, watch the television news live, people watch, and watch political demonstrations and sand castle competitions (among 100 or more events per year). Right here! Two things I do here are jump off the train and get coffee at Starbucks or run down to Rite Aid just half a block away and pick up needed household items without missing a train or a beat. There's so much more going on here, of course, and it's all usually of high entertainment value, particularly during Rose Festival week And the Christmas holidays. Take it from me, this is such a fabulous place to wait for the train. Give it a try sometime and I think you'll see what I mean!

Sometimes emergencies or rush situations happen and scheduling medical transport with wheelchair capability can be a serious hassle since most transport requires advanced scheduling and planning. COMPARISONS - Sadly many insurance don't cover non-emergency medical transport. Getting old isn't cheap and medical transport isn't either, compared to other similar services ANEMT rates are average to a little better. MetroWest transport is the most popular and great, but they are constantly booked at least 1-2 days out or 5-10 hours for same day. MetroWest also has stair capable wheelchairs and stretchers by request and door to door service. TriMet offers basic medical transport for fairly cheap via shuttle, but they don't offer door to door so you'll need someone to push if the chair isn't motorized and electric. Uber and Lyft have wheelchair capable vehicles, but again, no door to door service and requires advanced scheduling. Interestingly Kaiser Washington State insurance covers non-emergency transport, but not in Oregon. Above and beyond - Along with being able to respond quickly with door to door service, they helped with transferring inside the home to and from the wheelchair. Aways super nice and friendly guys. Easy pay via credit card through a tex message link or over the phone. Have questions, be sure to ask, they are very helpful and accommodating. Some venturing to work like myself, some I think just venturing home from the night before, others not venturing much at all but rather just enjoying our little stations hospitality. There is also a doughnut shop in the parking lot adjacent to the stop, greeting us all with the aroma of fresh and I'm sure delicious pastries. We have a little covered area to gather under on particularly wet days; those are the morning that we all get to know each other a bit more (one of us doesn't brush regularly and another wears too much cologne, but they shall remain private to retain the integrity of our little station's group). What makes things extra exciting is the 6, yes the 6! It too stops at our station providing just a little extra entertainment just before our CL arrives. It was the…read moreera of the great migration to the suburbs, and many of the downtown department stores had already moved to the malls. Nordstrom had plans in place to move out of downtown permanently and it would have surprised no one had Meier & Frank followed suit. Like my dad used to say, one could have fired a cannon down the middle of Broadway and not hit a living soul. Downtown workers fled by 5 pm and never stayed late because the area was pretty much "owned" at night by a dangerous element. On the weekends, everybody shopped at the malls and never came down just to hang out and enjoy. All in all, a very bleak outlook for our patient, Portland. The Portland Transit Mall pretty much saved Portland from going the way of so many other cities at the time - a long slow death march into urban hell. Nordstrom also agreed to build their flagship store in downtown Portland at this time. All of this revitalized Portland and has helped bring it to a place of prominence nationally that most Portlanders knew it deserved (there was a time that only San Francisco and Seattle were ever mentioned in the national media; Portland was considered the quaint country cousin). Sorry for the history lesson from this long-time Portland citizen, but I think it's interesting to compare and contrast and see how Portland has become a leader in transportation options. Considering it's a government-backed project, the Portland Transit Mall surprisingly came together in the mid-1970s without too much controversy and has continued to serve so many of us via bus, street car, and MAX in the tri-country area pretty efficiently and with some great updates over the years. Considering how large the system has become, there's so much that could go wrong (which on occasion it does), but there's so much more that goes right and attracts visitors and dollars to our fair city. I say Hail to the Portland Transit Mall.
