They do these tests to get the FULL picture of your oral care; and with these results they can determine the health of not only your teeth and gum but of other factors attributed to certain heart diseases and cancers. My insurance covered about 80% of the costs of these tests; so I guess it's to each their own insurer. As quite a few people do, I have a well founded fear of dentistry. Growing up I had to go, because my mom made me do it; but when that dentist had passed on (really nice guy, just didn't like the sharp pointy objects he poked me with), I didn't go searching for another doctor for nearly five years. In comes that fact that although I fear dentists, the idea of losing my teeth scares me quite a bit more! My mother would gladly tell me at every moment she got that I had her "new car" in my mouth. I got braces when I was in junior school, and the end result was about thirteen grand; so I cheerfully developed a fear of destroying this "brand new car". I live close to Bloor West, so my husband and I decided to try out Dr. Joe (the hubby had never went to a dentist before, but had decided it was time to start!) Anyway, believe it or not, I don't fear dentists anymore thanks to Dr. Joe specifically. He has a way with keeping his clients calm without the use of drugs (until needed); he has talked me through numerous checkups/consults and even a root canal. Mind you the sharp pointy objects are still poking, but the surprise factor is gone; you're not left guessing and stressing about whether his next move is going to hurt. And surprisingly enough, just knowing "You're about to feel a pinch, is that okay?" removes so much pain from lack of anxiety. These days, when they say, "Let me know if you feel any pain" I usually think, "Pfft! Bring it on!" And I've been going to his office now every three months for checkups. They also have a great method of distraction too; every checkup/cleaning room is installed with a flat panel monitor in the ceiling, so you can catch up with the news or HGTV while they're cleaning your teeth. X-Raying your teeth doesn't cost as much as at some other locations either, because they use digital photography to get an inside look at your teeth and gum. The price for costly film is now redundant, since the pictures are computer generated. Just The Other Day... My last visit was a few days ago and I almost nearly didn't make it! We have construction going on our house, and my timing just got all bungled up. I doubt this could have happened every time, but they were willing to push back my appointment *twice* that day until our "house guests" finally left. I even got a little goody bag too, which kinda made me laugh and feel all of eight years old again. It came with a toothbrush, dental floss, toothpaste and *lip balm*. I usually come home with the toothbrush and floss, but the added paste and balm was a nice treat! Let's Talk Money Dr. Joe's office is a little more pricey than what our insurance wants to pay; by the time we get a check back, we're about $15 out of pocket on average for these check-ups. Which on a side note, their receptionist does all the insurance work for you, so you don't have to worry about filling out the forms properly. We normally get our money back within five days of the check-up.

This was not the case. The hygienist was excellent and explained everything as she did things, let me watch Netflix on my iPhone, and asked if I needed breaks when I winced during the cleaning. Please don't let this last line deter you, the wincing is because I'm a wuss and again, deserved to be floss shamed. My new dentist, Dr. Walden was lovely, understanding, quick yet thorough and I definitely trust her with my smile. They're taking new patients, and if you have insurance they take the payment directly from your insurer which is mighty handy. Say cheese!

Often, in the past, when I go to a new dentist, I get the reaction of "Ooh, it's been six months…read moreplus one day since you last saw a dentist? [shaking head sympathetically] Tsk, tsk. [gesturing vaguely to invisible problems on an Xray] Well, I'm sorry, but here's the list of 14 things that NEED to be done. You do have insurance, right?" This was so not my experience here. I explained that my insurance runs out in two weeks and I have a sore tooth, so they squeezed me in to a short-notice cancellation. Two points for them there. I arrived late (my bad - had the address wrong) but they still whisked me in fairly quickly, and everything was done quite efficiently. I've been going to older-fashioned dentists in Oakland, CA where the Xrays were still being done with that horrid cardboard stuff and put up on lightboxes, so the digital ones that went on the overhead TV were kinda cool. Nice to be at a 21st century office. Dr. Walden and the hygienist were both really, REALLY nice. They were friendly and helpful, explained what they were doing and what the jargon meant, and despite the fact that it's been about 18-20 months since I'd seen a dentist, were not patronizing or casting about for things to stick my insurance company on. Actually, Dr. Walden was quite complimentary on my oral hygiene - so many dentists are rude or patronizing about it. The only problem they did find made complete sense (the corner of a 30-year-old filling was broken off on the tooth that was sore - now I understand why the floss kept snapping!), and the receptionist offered to fit me in this afternoon to get it fixed. Like other reviewers have said, no one LIKES to go to the dentist, but when they make it an almost pleasant experience, you can dislike it so much less. Addendum: I'm back from having that filling fixed. I will admit that dental work and needles in my mouth terrify me - a previous experience with an awful dentist in California that left me unable to chew on the left side of my mouth for *three years* - and Dr. Walden was very, very considerate and careful dealing with an obviously extremely uncomfortable patient. She kept up a reassuring patter throughout, interrupting herself frequently to keep me in the loop about what she was doing, explaining, checking on me, at one point informing me that I might want to clench my hands just a wee bit less since one of my fingers was clearly losing circulation... I sent my neighbour to her recently, too. His assessment? "She rocks!" And how often, I ask you, does someone hear THAT about a dentist? Second addendum: Have -you- ever heard of a dentist who emails you at 9pm on a Saturday evening to check how your new filling is holding up? I hadn't, either. Until Dr. Walden.

While they offered an apology for their error, it does not in a way make up for my lost time or frustration. "hmn I shouldn't be asleep right now because I have another commitment and I just can't put my finger on it... and it's not work, it's something else..." And then you realize that you are supposed to be at the dentist getting your teeth cleaned in 3 minutes and that's why you feel like you shouldn't be sleeping off a mid-week bender? No? That hasn't happened to you? Then... my bad (I guess). Long story short - I called the dentist and said I would be late and they were totally cool about it. Then I showed up (looking/smelling like a hobo) and they were totally cool about it. Then I disallowed the cavitron 5000 from my cleaning and they were totally cool about it. The bottom line message I want to deliver to you in this review, is that I am never switching dentists again. Actually, that's not exactly true. I am never switching hygienists again. If Lisa moved to a different dentist office, I would move my records along with her. This was the most painless dental cleaning I have ever had. That statement is not a joke. I had not been to the dentist in 1.5 years, and there was a lot of cleaning that needed to be done; Lisa had brand new dental tools that she was delighted to break in on me. She was done in 45 minutes (I have historically had to break up cleanings into 2 visits) and when I inspected her work, I expected to see residual tartar and plaque because of the efficiency and painlessness of the service, but the cleaning passed the quality control inspection. I remain shocked by the quality of this cleaning and it has inspired me to floss more regularly, because I want to preserve the work that she has done here. This is my new hygienist and I hope that I die before she does (like... a long time from now) because I can't imagine finding another person that is this good at this job.

Her hands are very dexterous and you barely feel her working on your teeth. She is also very thorough with her check ups, I feel my teeth are very well taken care of by her. I also have a dental implant from Baywell, the surgery was performed by Dr Luong herself. The surgery went smoothly, Dr Luong was very professional and explained to me the procedure and let me know what she was doing at every step. I recovered very quickly from the procedure. Overall, everyone I've encountered at Baywell has been pleasant and friendly. Just to name a few individuals that I've encountered at Baywell--Marianne the hygienist is very friendly, she does thorough cleanings and makes good conversation. Then the root canal failed and he sent me to a periodontal dentist to finish it but I was too swollen so they had to put me on steroids before finishing the root canal. I was in a lot of pain meanwhile. Suffice to say I didn't finish the implant or go back to him.
