Constant contact with the school. I receive weekly emails from the director, updating me on lesson plans and any special events (think field trips and fundraisers). The teachers call parents monthly to address any concerns or questions we may have. Each month, photos of my child are uploaded to a private Snapfish account. They're cloth diaper friendly! Your child brings their own lunch each day, or you can opt to order lunch (menus and order forms are available from the school). Right now, my sons options for ordering lunch are Mac and Cheese from McAlisters Deli one on day, or Grilled Chicken from Applebee's on another day. Refrigerators and microwaves are available in the classroom, so my son generally takes leftovers for lunch. Also, the school is completely nut free! Okay...but what about academics?? Each week has a theme. Let's take the week they learned about dental health as an example. It included making tooth artwork, reading books about teeth, a visit from a dentist and learning the Spanish word for teeth (diente). In the short time my son has been in attendance, he's made so much progress. Their program truly is Kindergarten Prep. I can't wait until my younger son begins school here in the fall.

Accidents happen--that's understandable--but what's not acceptable is the failure to inform parents when they do. Many times, children come home with bumps, bruises, or scratches, and there's no mention of how they occurred. These incidents often go undocumented and uncommunicated at pickup. As parents, we deserve to know what happens to our children during the day. Failing to report incidents is not just a communication issue--it's a serious safety concern. Nutritional Discrepancies During orientation, we were told our children would receive healthy, well-rounded meals and snacks--including juice options. However, the reality doesn't match the promise. Children report receiving only milk and water, and the food being served contains ingredients like Red Dye 40. Meals such as bean-only quesadillas are nutritionally insufficient for growing toddlers. These are not meals most adults would eat themselves, and our children deserve better. Concerning Language and Classroom Stress Another red flag is the language our children are bringing home. Phrases like "I need something to calm me down" or "I can't keep calm" are not typical of young toddlers. These are not just words--they're reflections of the emotional environment in the classroom. It raises serious concerns about the stress levels these children may be experiencing. Poor Communication with Families Communication throughout the year has been inconsistent and inadequate. When parents are unreachable, staff often fail to contact emergency contacts. We are left in the dark about daily happenings, incidents, or any changes in routine. The only time families were invited into the school was at the very end of the year. Even then, basic safety procedures weren't followed. One child was left outside alone with a new pickup person while a staff member went inside to copy their ID. This protocol should be reversed--child safety should never be an afterthought. Final Thoughts We send our children to school not only to learn but to be nurtured and protected. Unfortunately, this year at Sanders-Clyde Head Start fell short in those areas. I sincerely hope the administration takes these concerns seriously and works to create a safer, more transparent, and emotionally supportive environment for the children. Please remember: these are toddlers. They are at a critical stage in their development, and how we treat them today will shape the people they become tomorrow. Let's do better--for their sake.
