Maitland's Method might not be on your radar for personal fitness because it's not one of those big conglomerate gyms, but you should definitely consider it. Just to give you a summary: - This gym is primarily for personal training but you get access to some of the equipment as a regular client - They offer individual and partner training sessions (partner sessions are half the price which makes it very affordable) - Emphasis on strength and resistance training - Lots of very solid equipment and free weights Maitland and his team have a long history of strength training -- check out the wall of bodybuilding trophies and photos when you walk through the entrance. Among their trainers are bodybuilding champions and an ex-NFL linesman. You don't need to be an aspiring bodybuilder to appreciate the workout routine. There's a diverse mix of clients -- men, women, young, and old. Each trainer follows Maitland's method (hence the name) which has been refined over many years. Still learning about the method but so far so good! The trainers help you throughout the routine, keep a log of your exercises, and help you build fitness plans (for inside and outside the gym). For someone like me that forgets to count reps, this place is a godsend. My workout has become much more focused and efficient. I use to be able to waste hours at the gym when I was younger but now I recognize the importance of getting the most out of the time as possible. The extra cost for personal training has been well worth it! Trey has been especially friendly and effective. At nearly 7' tall and built like a football player (no surprise he use to play for the Colts) he might seem a little intimidating but he's actually probably one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. The exercises have been safe and I've been able to blend my new routine with soccer and running. He's helping prepare me for a marathon and build muscle at the same time (which will hopefully help prevent injury).

I knew of the kettlebell "getup" from workouts at the Y and had heard kettlebells were a distinct workout. I signed up for a workshop with Rapid Results Durham NC. Betsy Collie is amazing. I have been working with her for over a year. Her knowledge and enthusiasm communicated through out her workouts is the best I have experienced. Her company, Rapid Results is aptly named. Kettlebell workouts and stretching she incorporates has quickly increased my strength, balance and flexibility. She is fun loving, compassionate, and always teaching, teaching, teaching. She explains everything, she knows tons about not just technique but how and where it affects and strengthens. I like that I can work out at her place or via Zoom, she pays attention and helps all. I feel like a "there" participant. She customizes workouts weekly so we may be doing classic moves but are always learning something new which keeps the class interesting. You can work at your own speed and weight, no pressure except she will push you if she thinks you are lame ducking it, I believe is positive. She does the workouts with us so we can always see her technique. She walks it like she talks it. I highly recommend her and kettlebells!

Betsy has an extensive knowledge in strength training, and if I find any movement difficult or painful, she has an uncanny ability to pinpoint the problem and address it before it causes an injury. The 360 Approach is a small, indoor, personal (they call themselves "boutique") fitness studio geared towards individuals or groups in a holistic way. Their aim is to look at the individual from a physical, mental and spiritual standpoint; and while I don't feel very spiritual when I'm working out, I certainly feel welcomed and supported at 360! Chan and Sariah are amazing instructors, they know your name and they know how to push you. The Community Workouts on Saturday mornings (7a, 8a & 9a) are fantastic! These 45 minute sessions get you awake and working your body in new ways each week. Most of these classes revolve around intervals or circuit training. You'll begin with a warmup and go into anything from tire flips, hill sprints, stair climbs (they are on the first floor of a five store building, perfect for stair running!), pull-up's and lots of weighted exercised. The instructors take time to explain each exercise and they won't partake in the class with you, but instead monitor and correct form (or just encourage you along the way!) 360 offers a large variety of classes, from fitness bootcamp classes to high intensity interval training and core, cardio and toning class to group runs, kettle bell classes and even zumba. Most of their classes are in the morning with the exception of a handful of Monday and Wednesday evening classes which go until 5:30pm and Zumba at 6:30pm on Tuesdays. They also participate in a lot of community fitness events and have teams for many of the local races. They'll provide you with sweat towels and water bottles at the studio, and while there are lockers at the studio, you won't find a bathroom locker area or showers. Dealt with both for years and was only able to go to the gym for 4-8 weeks before pain would stop me. Finally, following other recommendations I made an appointment w/ Bull City and while the diagnosis of the elbow conflicted with what a doctor had previously told me I decided to just go with it and trust them. Turns out they had a much better understanding than previous medical professionals I'd seen. Through treatment and the exercises they gave me to do, which were different than doctors recommendations in the past, I actually saw steady improvement. There were setbacks here and there as I pushed myself in the gym but their physical therapists guided me on "good pain" vs "bad pain" and we adjusted as we went. Now through weeks of sessions with the team at Bull City PT I'm on month 10 of lifting and have put on 20+ pounds of mostly muscle. I didn't think this was possible without surgery. Highly recommend anyone in pain or being held back by an injury at least get a consultation - could change everything.
