We were blessed to be invited to Trevista for a tasting yesterday. The wine was excellent, the food was amazing but even better was the Hosts Hilda and James. I loved every minute of my tour and tasting. What a beautiful winery.

The owners were amazing. Engaged, informative, and so kind. Food samples that they provided for us were so delicious. Wine pairings was awesome. And the scenery is immaculate! You can take pictures from anywhere. Can not wait to come back.

1st time to Valle and I had an entire itinerary for my husband and I. Our first evening we went to dinner at Pardella Humo y Brasa. Even though I checked the weather prior to going it was colder than expected. The gentleman at the next table offered an extra blanket he had brought for him and his wife. A while later, we started up a conversation with the his group and the wife ask what brings us to Valle and if we had plans the next day. We told her we had some tastings and lunch planned at Fuana. She said if you're not busy at 3p you should come by TreVista for Tapas and Tasting. It's the only winery that does Tapas and Tasting and it's by reservation only. I said can you get us on the list? She said yes give me your information she pauses and says what time is your lunch at Fuana? I tell her at 1pm she said I don't think you will make it on time and you don't want to rush at Fuana, so next time you guys are in Valle come see us. They tell us to have a good evening and left. Hubby and I thought about it and later that evening reached out via the TreVista webpage where we found out the couple were the owners! We sent an email stating we would like to attend the Tapa and Tasting after all. Hilda emailed us back the next morning saying we were more than welcomed. We cancelled Fuana!!! James and Hilda are amazing individuals with pure hearts. So happy we ran into them, TreVista ended up being a highlight of our trip!

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! Thank you to Tim B. who introduced a group of us to this wonderful winery! Run by a fun, lovely, hospitable husband and wife (Jim and Hilda) team who clearly love what they do, this felt like being invited into the home of a friend's relatives. We got to learn about the history of their vineyard and go down into the cava and learned more about their wine making process. After, we were treated to generous pours of their tempranillo (and bought a few bottles to go!) and plate after plate of exquisite tapas to go with the wine. The pairings were spot on and it's even better knowing that Hilda is a self-taught chef. The flavors were incredible. The grounds in their entirety were simply beautiful. It's not necessarily a place you'd pass by on accident, but one you have to be guided to and will never forget. It was relaxing and peaceful, a perfect spot in the middle of the beautiful Valle de Guadalupe.

    Tapas ... so good.

This place was FANTASTIC. I see on their Instagram that they do weddings too here, and I could totally see myself getting married here some day ... it's a beautiful place. We came here with Tim B. this past Sunday as part of the YSB Mexico UYE (wine and tacos - what more can you ask for??), and this was our first stop. James and Hilda were great hosts - Hilda's tapas (small plates) were delicious, and I scarfed up all of them, even the lamb empanada (and I don't usually like lamb). We tried the 2012, 2013, and 2014 Tempranillo that Trevista makes, and I don't usually like red wine either but all of it was so tasty, especially with the tapas. We also saw the fields and the cellar, and got to meet the three very cute pups who live at the winery too. I'm going to try and come back to Trevista some day ... such a gorgeous place and the wine and food were incredible.

James and Hilda are such special people and their wine tasting experience was truly unforgettable. They're both incredibly personable, put together a great ambience and their Tempranillos are delicious. They were served at the perfect temperature, with the most AMAZING food pairings made by Hilda and James was so generous. The 2.5 hours spent with them were truly not enough. I can't wait to return again and again! You two have a forever visitor!!

Trevista Vineyards was the first of two wineries our group visited during the day trip to the Guadalupe Valley. It is owned by the husband-wife team James (Jim) and Hilda, OC residents who maintain the vineyard on weekends. This is the reason behind their reservations-only policy. When the van opened Jim greeted us to his home with open arms along with his three winery dogs who were happily greeting me and the other tour companions. Hilda was busy in the back making the finishing touches for the accompanying small bites we were to have with our wines. Our trip was divided in two parts: Jim would take us through the vineyard and cellars while Hilda would then guide us through the culinary portion of the tour. Jim was very knowledgable about the winemaking process. What sets them apart from other wineries in the valley is their sustainability practices and their specialization in one grape varietal, tempranillo. Everything starts in the vineyard as they handpick the grapes at appropriate ripeness. The straw hay acts as a natural weed repellent as it can easily be taken out. The leaves provide natural shade for the grapes. Everything has a reason and is connected with the "circle of life", which also continues in the cellar. The cellar, according to Jim, is temperature and climate controlled by natural means. Well water and a "tea" produced by worms produce the water necessary for the cellar to function and the tea acts as a natural pesticide that is applied to the leaves. The frogs come out from the drain also act as insect cleaners. After the vineyard and cellar tour we were seated at a large table where Jim would take us on a vertical tasting of the 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages and pair the vintages with Hilda's creations. We had about 8 courses of pinchos (light bites) - palate cleanser, 2 main courses per wine and a mignardise at the end. Hilda's secret to success was an Argentinian channel they watched while the winery was being constructed. She would make dishes from the channel the week after the dish was introduced. Hilda did such an excellent job with the pinchos that I really don't have a favorite "course" as I liked everything! The wines complemented the pinchos well. As for the wines themselves the tempranillos themselves were different. Jim instructed us on how to properly observe the wine for defects and how to note the differences between the years. We were given crystal glasses to observe differences. - 2013 was more clear and smooth and was my favorite vintage. - 2012 was more cloudy and heavier. - 2014 had lots of sulfites and thus needed to be decanted and was suited for the last courses. The main take-home lesson is that tempranillo is a versatile wine that can be paired a lot of food. We got to try beef jerky from one of our companions, which Jim paired with a 2009 cabernet. It was one of the lighter and sweeter cabernets, which is very unusual for a cab. I am not a cabernet person but I liked it so much that I spent $40USD on a bottle. It's comparable to some of the cabs I found at another specialty cab winery in Napa Valley with its bottles going for at least $100. Sadly due to their focus on tempranillo they no longer make cabernet. Thank you so much to Jim and Hilda for entertaining us in your humble abode as well as to Tim (our tour guide) for introducing us to an awesome winery. Trevista is one of the top 5 winery experiences I've encountered as a wino. I would love to one day slowly introduce the No1DP to good red wines and this place is certainly closer to me than wineries in the Napa/Sonoma Valleys. For now I'll just wait for the right opportunity to crack open the 2009 cab...

Warning: A visit to Trevista will shatter any good past experiences and ruin all future wine tastings in which you may participate - anywhere in the world. This place deserves a detailed review, but for those who only scan these things, I want to provide a summary upfront: wine is great, views/setting are fantastic, and the hospitality is stellar. If you're coming to Valle de Guadalupe, email Trevista and do everything you can to schedule a tasting here. Okay, ADHD folks - go ahead and send your email. For those who crave detail...let's carry on, shall we? Trevista is a very small production vineyard that's tucked away on a dirt road. Jim, the owner (along with his wife, Hilda) has spent lots of time in Spain learning the tried and true methods for successfully growing the tempranillo grape, and once the wine hits your palette you'll agree that he paid attention during his travels to the Iberian peninsula. As part of the tasting, you'll get a debrief on their winemaking process along with a tour of the small-but-sophisticatedly sustainable cave. Once "class is dismissed," the tasting takes place on a long, wooden table that faces the vineyard and the mountains. There is never any rush, and with our particular group, it almost felt like an impromptu cocktail party with great friends, and sounds of nature accentuated the conversation. Jim and Hilda's hospitality is something to be admired, and it certainly enhances the experience. I hate to ruin surprises (don't taze me bro!), but I need to mention this: Hilda is an excellent chef and you'll get to taste more than just wine when you come to Trevista. Before going to the Valle, the big question mark on my mind was, "ok really, how good is this wine?" You have my word - Trevista is doing it all the right way (read: not the cheap way) and the quality is on par with anything out of Europe or Northern California. Me personally, I enjoyed some of the unique characteristics of the wine down here -- after a while, the same production methods up "north" get a little monotonous. Some tips: (1) plan to spend 2-3 hours here, it's not worth it to rush yourself (this is wine after all!), (2) Trevista is located off of a dirt road, so your car is going to get dusty, and (3) call/email ahead. Going to the Valle without a stop at Trevista is really doing yourself a disservice, so just don't do it, okay? :)

Trevista Vineyards gave me a life changing experience. I generally don't drink red wine but the Tempranillo that James makes in small batches is incredible. The small bites his wife Hilda makes are even more mind blowing. But their hospitality and way of doing things is what makes them special and different than anywhere you'll ever go. I was brought here by Tim and Boca Roja Wine Adventures and was amazed from the moment we drove up. The scenery is gorgeous. You're in the middle of nowhere surrounded by mountains and the sounds of nature. We were greeted by sweet wine dogs. James, the owner and wine maker gave us a tour of his grapes, cellar, and explained how he makes magic. We were then given a vertical tasting at his outdoor dining table. We tried a beautiful 2012, 2013 and 2014 Tempranillo (the only wine he makes). My personal favorite was the 2013, I brought two bottles home. With each wine his wife Hilda paired two little hors-d'oeuvres or "pinchos" to go with them. They did explain pretty much anything goes with Tempranillo but their choices were so tasty! I did not have anything less than delicious. We sat there for a couple hours enjoying each others company. While the pours were very generous we didn't get too drunk since we had food and took our time. What really sets this place apart is you're basically in their home. The food prepared is made in a You'll also be surrounded by beautiful terrain (Trevista = three views). Pictures don't do the place justice. Do yourself a favor and check this place out!

Holy wine grapes batman this is by far the best wine tasting experience in the valley. But not so fast, don't expect to just roll in and start drinking wine. This is by appointment only and only open on weekends. James and Hilda are 2 of the most genuine down to earth people you will ever meet. Forgot about anything you knew about wine tasting and throw it out the window. This is not your typical setup this is much more personal and intimate. This is a mini tour, history lesson, sit down and talk about the wine and a food paring that will blow your mind. From the moment you arrive you are greeted with open arms and treated like family. I had the pleasure of visiting this gem twice in a couple of weeks and feel like we have been friends forever. I will be back bringing more friends to come see for themselves what a wonderful experience awaits in the heart of the valley.

This is not wine tasting as we know it. Plan on spending at least 3 hours taking in the beautiful grounds, amazing hospitality of the hosts, scrumptious red wines, and delicious food pairings. I was blown away by Trevista. The wine, the food, the grounds, the people, all so beautiful. An unforgettable experience.

We had the best time at this winery Saturday! The owner, James is so passionate about his wine and what he does and it shows while he talks and explains his whole process. From the moment you enter the vineyard you feel so at home and welcome and part of the family. The property is gorgeous as well. And the wine was phenomenal. We can't wait to go back soon!

Off the beaten path, the lovely owners of Trevista welcomed us to their vineyard and made us feel like family. Wine tasting here is simply fun. The self-taught chef and the winemaker will make sure you leave a fan of their vineyard. We started with a tour and learning about the bio sustainable practices and met the worms that produce tea and keep away insects so they don't have to use pesticides. Then we spent plenty of time tasting wine out of crystal glasses on the patio. I think we spent about three hours here because we were having so much fun. For those less knowledgeable about wine, Trevista will teach you all you need to know (and how to pass for a wine snob!) We tasted Tempranillo from different vintages and a Cabernet Sauvignon from 2009. I walked away with bottled of the 2012 and 2014 Tempranillo. The Cab was equally impressive, but I just couldn't take that much wine back across the border. All wines are available to purchase for $40 a bottle. As for food, your tastebuds will be happy you stopped by Trevista. The chef brought us so much good food! See the photos of stuffed mushrooms and empanadas and mini crepes. She runs a nonprofit that supports orphanages in baja, so the day we visited two girls from one of the orphanages were assisting her. We asked about how she learned to cook such delicious food and was told the secret was the cooking channel! Also, Trevista has three winery dogs! Watch out for the big dog - he tends to plop down somewhere and take a nap - you might just have to step over him. That or he'll slobber on you to get attention. The other two little rascals are pretty cute and will pose for photos. The black and white pup sat under the table facing me for most of the tasting. He must have known I was his biggest fan! That or he thought I was going to "drop" some food to him.

But over the last two decades they have made large strides in quality with new modernization techniques. Besides all of the wine makers that have been here for generations, others (Spain, France, and Italy) from around the world have joined in wine making in the area. The area has all of the basic ingredients (proper climate and soil) needed to make great wine. The area sits in the same latitude as the great wine making areas of the Mediterranean. As a result, now I am a big fan of the area's wine. Now many compare the area to Tuscany Italia before the big tourist rush occurred. The greater area is also home to many Michelin rated restaurants with a great ocean/farm to table menu (carta). Organic and sustainability are fully represented in restaurants as well. If you love seafood, then this place is heaven because of the abundance of fresh seafood from both the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific. I predict that once the new airport in Ensenada is built then this place is going to explode with tourism. Currently, having to fly into Tijuana then take a bus or private transport has been the only way to reach this area from most places in the US with the exception of southern California. People in southern California are lucky enough to drive down for a weekend because it's just that close to them. It's the equivalent of people from Chicago spending a weekend in wine country in Michigan, Indiana, or Wisconsin. In all honesty there is no comparison because most wine in the Midwest is mediocre at best. The problem in the Midwest is the climate extremes which are not suitable to most popular wine varietals. Even when I do find wine from the Midwest that I like, it usually has at least $50-$60 price tag. At a typical grocery store in Spain or Portugal very good bottle of wine is sometimes cheaper than a bottle of water! Under $10 a bottle pricing gets you very good wine, above that you can have even better quality. The winery is beautiful even in the winter. I like to visit in the winter because although it's not super warm here, I go from wearing a winter jacket to wearing a light jacket or sweater. The nights can drop into the 40s which is still much better than a winter polar vortex back home. There is a lot less people, therefore, I can also get into the best restaurants in the area. My rental flat had absolutely no neighbors until the last day when it was time to leave. The isolation was very nice because the grounds are beautiful and very full of life. A huge assortment of birds make this their winter getaway from the harsh winters up north. Citrus fruit was in season down here and the neighboring property had an orchard of trees filled with oranges. The property has a few nice pathways to walk after mealtimes. I also enjoyed the outdoor wine tour which explores the different varietals fields with an enthusiastic guide that was quick witted with jokes. The wine pourings that accommodate the tour were delicious and wisely chosen. I also opted to take the wine cave tour right after the outside tour. How was the cave tour? It was disappointing and frustrating. First of all, as I patiently waited to be taken down to the cave from their gift shop area they forgot about me. They have a list of who is supposed to go down and yet they still went down without everyone?!? Finally a cashier notices that I'm just walking around not shopping and asked me if I was waiting for someone. I told him that I was waiting for the cave tour to begin. He got a hold of the tour guide who had already gone down with some of the group and he came up to retrieve us. Those that were already in the cave, already had been served food that was optional to order with the tasting. After several pourings in the previous tour, yes, I was ready to have some food to lessen the impact of more pourings. Also, they had a nice selection of items that would complement the pourings. Somehow, they forgot about me again, and I noticed others were getting a different presentation than I was on the same tour. Okay, now a sense of frustration is overcoming me and I mention the oversights to the guide. He lied to me and told me that the others had a different level of wine tasting. This disorganized tour was also set up backwards because there should have been a walking tour of the fermentation area first then tastings afterwards. Besides the bad cave tour that I definitely don't recommend. Everything else was great with the exception of the cold washroom on cold nights. They have very nice employees, beautiful grounds, very good breakfast, and a great dinner restaurant called Latitude on the property. Would I come back? Yes, because besides a few frustrating moments the rest was great.

Amenities were appreciated - bottles of drinking water (was told to refrain from consuming water from tap in Mexico so this was a big plus), clean towels, hygiene and supplemental kits were available, and mirrors were abundant (long, standard, and close up). Each room also comes with a TV and localized air conditioning and fan unit, giving full control over room climate. There's also a balcony but it was much too hot to be out during the day. The evenings were cool and provided a nice place to sit back and enjoy the stars. There's a shared outdoor pool, a gymnasium and a chapel house. I only got to use the pool and it was relatively clean aside from the occasional bug that might have fallen in. There were towels and chairs for patrons to use. The lake was a nice stroll but it's not too big and much of the path is fully exposed to the sun. Breakfast occurs between 8-9:30 am at the main building on the second floor. They'll check you in at the front desk for your name and room number and you'll have the option to sit indoors in the dark but elegant dining room or outdoors on the patio. The food is self service and included a variety of options including eggs, beans, meats, dairy, nuts and fruits. They also have a dessert section where I got to try a chia seed parfait with fresh berries. Orange juice and coffee are also served with your meal. The service is phenomenal here. The staff are friendly and very welcoming. For non-Spanish speakers, it wasn't too difficult to communicate our needs. Overall, El Cielo is a great vacation spot to disconnect from all your worries and engage in the present. There's not a whole lot to do here specifically, but the downtime offers room to connect with your loved ones. With its proximity to other hot spots and eateries, El Cielo proved to be a humble and comfortable rest spot in between the tourist attractions, explorations, and wine and dining. If you're looking for a place that has nearly everything taken care of for you to enjoy a stress free vacation, El Cielo has you covered. You just need to make your way down here!

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE HOTEL ONLY…read more This property sits a hotel, winery, and restaurant. We stayed at Casa Ocho in Room 7 at Bruma and absolutely loved it. We checked in around midnight and the staff made it ridiculously easy, they were super responsive on WhatsApp and had someone basically waiting for our arrival to guide us to where we needed to be. The moment we walked into the room, it felt like stepping into a desert-chic dream. Slippers and robes waiting for us was a small thing, but much appreciated after our 4 hour drive. The private hot tub was the real showstopper though. Sitting in warm water under a sky full of stars with zero bugs and zero noise is peak vacation energy. The shower in the morning was another highlight: sunlight pouring in, everything clean, and the products actually smelled good. I'm usually picky with hotel toiletries, but theirs were legit. My only gripes: the lighting at night in the room is a little too dim, and the shower knobs took a minute to decode. Once I figured out the perfect combo (and wrote it down like a mad scientist), it was fine. Room 7 also comes with its own private parking lot, which made everything even smoother. Beautiful place, super romantic, and a perfect little desert escape in the middle of Mexican wine country. Highly recommend staying here. Mornings turned into a little ritual for us, a quick drive to the bakery for coffees and warm pastries, with sheep, horses, and cows dotting the road like we were in some countryside commercial. The dogs and cats on the property were basically the welcoming committee. Finding them all became a game, and every single one got spoiled with pets. A couple tips if you stay here: - Don't walk to the Wine Garden or the bakery. Just drive. - From rooms 6 and 7, you can walk straight down through the vineyard to Fauna or the winery. It's an easy 5 minute walk, but know that coming back at night is pitch black. If that sounds annoying, drive- even though it's super close. - Try to have brunch at the Michelin rated Bruma Wine Garden (breakfast ends at 11am), fantastic menu and fresh juices

Everyone at the winery from the guard that meets you at the entrance, to the rep checking you in and out tour guide... first class! The wine tour was great, the vibe was even better.
