Tres Amigos - Mexican Near Me - McPherson, Kansas

First, the parking: Obviously in McPherson, there's ample parking everywhere, but I'm trying to be consistent with my reviews :) There are two ways to get into the restaurant; we found a side door to the building on South Maple, but you can enter on West Marlin as well. We were greeted and seated immediately. Once seated, our server came by with chips and salsa in a cute little bottle. We got side dishes to pour the salsa into. It's very mild, which is fine with me (just a hint of spicy, barely). The gentleman was very pleasant and took our order. The iced tea ($3) came from a coffee machine, so the coffee smell was infused; we returned, but it came back pretty much the same way. I feel like brewing a big pot of tea would be so much better. Also, there was very little ice in the tea, and he didn't initially bring lemon. I feel like someone should do some research on what iced teach really should look like. Iced tea done correctly is a really big deal and adds/subtracts from the dining experience. I appreciate that he was willing to redo it though. I ordered the carne asada platter ($15). It was a good size piece of meat, slightly seasoned, but not salty as most places. I enjoyed the rice and refried beans that it came with. It was advertised as sliced avocado but came as guacamole. All items were perfect in seasoning for me, but others might say that it's bland (there's salt and pepper for that!). My friend ordered the combo #1 ($11) but wasn't as successful. It didn't say what type of enchilada; she wanted cheese, but it came with meat. They were very nice about redoing it though, but in the end, she didn't like the cheese. One can choose from either beans or rice, but the server didn't ask; she wanted beans, but it came with rice; however, she didn't send that back. The learning would be for both sides to ask for preference (more on the server side because customers may not be aware or remember). If you need to split the bill, you bring the check to the cashier and say how you want the bill split. In all, I would come again because it was more to my taste, and I appreciated that the employees we interacted were service oriented. read more

Food was bland and flavorless. Carne asada was tough, rice was dry and clumpy, salsa was watered down and flavorless, Pollo bandido was terrible. The chicken tasted old and microwaved and the cheese sauce was watery and lacked flavor. We tried ordering queso at the beginning of our meal, but the waitress hurried off as soon as we answered her when she asked for a drink order. Tried again to order the queso when she brought the drinks, but again she hurried off before my husband could finish his sentence. All around terrible food and terrible service. read more

LOVED the food and service! We're just passing thru town on our way back home and Even though we ate here on a Tuesday night the Atmosphere was great. Its hard to find a good chimy chonga in KS.. everyone bakes them here. That aside i got the idea, our waiter didn't want to there. (Maybe he called off , and his boss demanded he come in). He seemed to have an attitude. The food was ok... Not great...just ok.. Ordered it to be fried but that doesn't matter. The refried bean were good. But the rice was a bit dry.. like it was under the heat lamp too long. Thank you to who it may concern. I really hope the waiter day got better that day. read more

If I could give this place a zero I would. We're visiting town, read reviews so we thought we would give this place a try. I had a burrito, my daughter had Enmole Poblano. The mole sauce on the chicken was a bright red, instead of a brownish. The flavor was very bland. The rice had peas and corn in it, which I've never had Spanish rice with vegetables in it. I had a Dr Pepper with no flavor. My burrito was fine. My daughter could not eat her en mole dish, because it was so bland and the rice was awful. I asked our waiter to take off the Dr. Pepper and my daughter's dish off the bill. A woman, I'm guessing the manager, came back to our table said she wouldn't charge for the Dr. Pepper but would charge for my daughter's dinner and asked, "Do you want a box"? Obviously I said No! The restaurant has a nice ambient. The employees are well mannered and friendly. My complain is on the food. They messed up or got confused. My husband ordered a Chile Verde which the menu said it has pork chops but instead they served him pork tips (carnitas). The taste was good, nothing exceptional or an experience to remember. Not from this area but my friend and I were hot from the weather and wanted a margarita. So we saw this place and stopped in. First....people working there were very nice. Now, for the complimentary salsa.....I've never had such soupy salsa. It was like water with a touch of salsa added to it. Would hope they would change that. Their blanco cheese dip was pretty much the same. We shared a Jalisco fajita and it was good. We also shared a pitcher of mango margaritas........most places I've been to I should have feeling a huge buzzz.......feeling only a sugar coated rush. Lots of sugar, no liquor. Hands down this is the best Mexican food in McPherson... With that being said, why only three stars? The problem is that this is not good tasting authentic Mexican food. In general, the staff is super friendly, the restaurant is clean, the food comes out quick but the food is also bland. I ordered a lot of different things on the menu.. It took me a minute to realize this restaurant was inside an office building but I am glad I took the time to find it. I had the pork carnitas which were excellent. They were well spiced and crispy enough to know they were genuinely re-fried as authentic carnitas should be. read more

I stopped in for dinner and was glad that I did. I ordered the Pollo Bandido and cleaned the plate off. The grilled chicken was cooked perfectly and the cheese sauce was very tasty. Of course the rice and beans were a perfect compliment. I also ordered some guacamole, but was less impressed with this. I prefer my guacamole to be chunky, not puréed. Don't listen to anyone else, this place is worse than la fiesta. TRUST ME! I have the credentials. Servers are strange here and food is just plain bad. Just to add insult to injury the drinks are awful. La fiesta has good food and great family service. read more

The atmosphere here is nice and the help/and ownership is very friendly. The food however, left something to be desired. I had the lunch buffet and found many of the dishes to be cold and underseasoned and I was eating them 15 minutes after opening. Tres Amigos has good food for a good price, and the service is outstanding. The food is prepared fast, and the servers are nice and genuine. If you're looking for some solid Mexican cuisine (as opposed to liquid or pureed) then Tres Amigos does well. read more

My husband and I had dinner here tonight. It was so so good!! We shared an order of guacamole and an order of chicken fajitas. It was plenty for two people. The guacamole was wonderful and the flavor of the chicken fajitas would be hard to beat. We also had margaritas. I was a little worried when they were brought to the table they kind of looked like green koolaid but don't let the color fool you. They were really good, light and not too sweet. read more

We often call in for carry out and it's ready in 10 minutes - and is excellent. I would recommend the arroz con pollo with an order of cheese sauce to go on top. The do have a lunchtime buffet and salad bar if you'd like a variety of options per meal. read more

Runny cheese dip, taco shells that tasted like they came out if an Old El Paso taco kit, chunks of iceberg lettuce and bland and runny refried beans. I like the food here, especially the Molcajete. Service is always fast and consistent. Parking is easy. I recommend going here hungry and getting one order of the Molcajete for two people to share or plan to take home leftovers. read more

Food is fantastic. I used to try something different each time, but now I just order the Chori-Pollo every time. Service is pretty meh. Servers are slow to get to you, fill your drinks, bring you your check etc. I love the food so much that still only knocks it down a star to me. Excellent Mexican food. It tastes authentic and the service is always fast and friendly. I think their salsa is especially good. They also have an extensive menu with lots of traditional/authentic favorites, as well as several items that those with a less adverturous palate would enjoy. I'm glad we tried this place. It probably took us a while because we didn't like either of the restaurants that were previously in this building. Prices are also reasonable. read more

Update: On our 3rd visit to Tres Amigos our experience was very different then our first 2. Our waitress took about 10 minutes to bring out tortillas and my wife said one of the items she got off the lunch buffet was cold inside. The thing that really upset me about the waiting so long to get the tortillas was that A) the restaurant was not busy and B) we brought friends from out of town to eat there. One of the friends is generally pretty quiet but even she was getting irritated at the bad service. We arrived about noon'ish so it wasn't like we got there several hours after lunch. Also this same waitress never refilled my glass once. IF we go back I will either have a waitress named Dulces (Candy) or I do not think we will stay. The difference between the two waitresses was night and day. Now I see what the people who gave bad reviews were talking about. read more

Correct the Molcajete was fantastic. A single will serve 2 people with a medium appetite.

The food is good, the prices are reasonable, and the wait staff is decent. They have one dude I call speedy Gonzales cause he is always running from table to table. I think this is the better of the 3 mexican places. Thursday is $2 margaritas 12oz frozen, they are pretty decent. read more
