I have been going to Dr Moyer for many years. He is the best. Extremely empathetic. He is a good listener and tailors your medications to your needs. read more

Dr. Trenton Moyer is a rare find - a Doctor who not only possesses medical expertise but also genuinely cares about his patients. Dr. Moyer actively listens, values patient opinions, and provides empathetic care. I can't say enough wonderful things about him - a true standout in the medical field. Highly recommended! His dedication to patient care is evident, this can easily be seen after talking to him for a few short minutes. His passion for helping others truly shines through. He actually wants to know how you're doing instead of just checking off boxes. It's not every day you encounter a Doctor like him, but it's a pretty great feeling when you do. I'm so thankful for apps/platforms, such as Yelp, that allow myself and others to share reviews of wonderful businesses and professionals so that others may benefit from them as well. read more

These reviews are quite interesting, especially seeing the polar difference in individual interactions. I have been going to a special treatment on the same floor. I accidentally saw his name on a office suite. I was so surprised that I had to do a double take! I shuddered and thought, gee.. I hope I NEVER bump into him here! As far as the positive reviews, maybe they have insurance or social status that he approves us. It doesn't surprise me that he has a office in La Jolla and also works at Mesa Vista inpatient hospital... a place that doesn't accept Medi-cal. I am willing to put my personal business out here to express my extreme dissatisfaction. I've only see him at Mesa Vista since, unfortunately, he was assigned to my case. Due to some difficult years and misdiagnosis from major depressive disorder to Bipolar. I've had episodes of psychosis so I have had the DISPLEASURE of dealing with his arrogant, snobby, obviously just there to have a income personality!! Before I share more details about my negative interactions with him! At Mesa Vista, if you wish to change your inpatient doctor, you have to write a request and a particular doctor handle these situations. I wrote a long detailed complaint and even suggested who I wanted to see... another psychiatrist there that I saw years ago when she was a resident. While Mesa Vista is a exceptional hospital with many caring nurses and doctors, for whatever reason, I never got a response or change of care. I assumed that unfortunately, when you are in a very vulnerable situation especially in mental health issues, you are rarely taken seriously. So, very 1st hospitalization and 1st brief interaction w/him... he pretty much said within 3min that I should do ECT (elecrtroconvolcent Therapy) and I snapped back... I value my Brain! He said nothing and I had lost days of sleep before my admission. I have bipolar yet he kept writing MDD despite my having psychosis at times and mixed episodes. Mine aren't extreme but had he ever spent more then 5-8 min with me. The evening I refused ECT, he rx me sleep meds. Since I majored in human development and neuroscience at UCSD, I had taken a course in psychopharmacology. That doesn't make me a expert but gives me some help in making educated decisions. I felt the med dose was more then I felt was ok but dosing looks relative. I finally got a nurse to inform me that the dose is more then avg. I wasn't familiar with the med and desperate for sleep. I was completely knocked out so much that I couldn't get to the bathroom fast enough in the morning! Talk about humiliation!! Soon, dr Moyer comes through and I see him crinkle his nose and sniff the air, then asks if I've had a shower! I said, well the med you gave me sedated the hell out of me and lost my bladder control! Thank you!! I was over him as it was but now even more so. I had him with a few additional hospitalizations and he ALWAYS drops in for 5min! I doubt I've ever seen him for 10min! I found that most patients assigned to him strongly disliked him especially that he spent such little time in such severe situations!! I complained to another psychiatrist I trusted and they professionally stated that he wasn't popular! I saw that my insurance was billed around $150 per visit... I'm sure it was billed for a full session (not 5min) When I ultimately could not take antipsychotic meds due to a heart Arrhythmia, I was still hearing voices and the ONE positive thing I can say regarding this severe and long hospitalization that he did seem to be competent about medications. I decided that maybe I needed to try ECT and he seemed like he didn't think of that solution! He didn't really give me much information and he wasn't even the one who gives the treatment! I would think that a full time psychiatrist in a inpatient setting that supports ECT would have training to do it. Fortunately it DID help me but long long story longer.... I always generally felt that he was disinterested and just giving a service for $$$ Interestingly, because I have a lot of connections in mental health since mental health was my career goal. I've subsequently learned from credible professionals that he is often disliked and has a lot of negative reviews, complaints and mediocre performance. Dissertation over! Stay away! As for those who claim positive experiences with him... I'm clueless!! Ok, now I'm finished ! read more

I loved Dr. Moyer when I had insurance that he accepted. I am genuinely surprised to see negative reviews! I've seen 4 psychiatrists in my life, 1 of which was dubious and (I felt) disrespectful and rude, 1 that was seemingly apathetic yet helpful, and 2 that I felt were caring, genuine, trustful, honest, and down-to-earth; Dr. Moyer was one of the two latter. My goal is to get insurance that he accepts when I can afford it. It was simply easy working with him, like he had known me for a long time as a family friend, and I felt comfortable around him within minutes (after seeing a psychiatrist that I felt patronized by for months). I can't express how refreshing it was talking with Dr. M for 5 minutes. I felt in good hands. I also felt very respected by Dr. Moyer. Furthermore, I felt like he went above and beyond in helping me out multiple times. I could definitely see him being my psychiatrist for life (if I can use one for that long). He'd definitely be the first I'd recommend in San Diego! read more

I've been this Dr.'s patient for years. I like him as a person. I go to him for my meds, and that's about it. He's tweaked the meds a little bit and changed them a couple of times; we seem to work out good combos that last for a while. I've seen him over a dozen times. Since I only see him for meds, we're both happy not to discuss anything about my life peripheral to how my meds are working, and tweaking dosages of changing them. Essentially, he's a very narrow kind of doctor - one who ensures that when you're taking experimental pharmaceuticals, you're checking in and not having the adverse side-effects. It's all been sanctioned, blessed, and christened by the System. No Reefer Madness here. Taking care of your mental health requires four or more different doctors who don't talk to each other. You have to be a project manager of your own mental health, if you're sane enough, god bless ya'. There's the primary care physical doctor, who takes care of matters relating to your physical body, your therapist (psychologist, analyst, drum circle, whatever) where you work things out, your psychiatrist (this guy) who doles out the controlled substances and notes the results for the pharma companies, and your priest/shaman/roshi/rabbi/imam/mom who helps you keep your sense of purpose intact. Add acupuncturist, midwife, or whatever other healer you might need. You gotta work with all of 'em if you have issues. He's always very distracted. Reliable, and it's a hassle-free system. I call him for refills and leave a message, he calls them in, the pharma calls me, bam bam bam no having do do stuff over and over again. He bills me, I pay online, easy as long as things are steady. If something doesn't work, we try a new drug or a different dose. That's it. No narratives. In 2007, I met an older psychiatric doctor who told me he was the last of the dinosaurs - someone who prescribed medications AND counseled. They don't do that anymore I guess. It's called progress, in the land where everything is called the opposite of what it really is. Bottom line: if you could be a danger to yourself or others, or feel out of control, he's not your guy. He's only for maintenance in my view, in which case he's reliable and all around a good guy. But distracted. You have to sort of drive the show and tell him what you need and what's going on. read more

My son was 2 minutes late for his appointment, booked in at the front desk. I was with him. Twenty minutes later Dr. Moyer came out and told us he wouldn't see him, he'd have to make another appointment because he was late --- since appointments are only 15 minutes. This guy is a pill pusher and should be investigated -- fifteen minutes isn't enough time to talk to a patient and evaluate responses to different medications -- and he has the bedside manner of dirt. He was extremely condescending to both my son and me - So my son didn't get any medications from him, and was again turned off by the psychiatric community. And now he's gone, from overdosing on prescription drugs he got on the street ----- Get this uncaring pill-pushing quack off the street, and stop giving him your money read more

Dr. Moyer is a fantastic doctor. He is always on time and he is definitely a great doctor, especially if you already know which meds have worked for you. He will not prescribe you crazy amounts of benzo's because he does look out for the best interest of his patients. He is a nice guy, easy on the eyes and definitely has a kind heart. The office was nothing special but I was in out in 25 minutes, which works out great for my busy schedule. I think many of the disgruntled reviews were from people who are upset because they have mental issues, that cannot always be solved with pills only. I have seen Dr. Moyer while inpatient at Sharp Mesa Vista and I liked him so much that I decided to see him outside the hospital as well. Those of you out there who wrote such a hostile reviews about Dr. Moyer might want to consider a med change or maybe add a therapist to your mental health repertoire. Because he's a cool guy. read more

HORRIBLE DOCTOR. He literally knows nothing about the Meds he prescribes and is impossible to reach. Billing staff is so separated that its difficult to even pay via insurance. Definitely stay away if you can he's not worth the money. Friends of mine have accidentally gone to him from other recommendations from their doctors and found him to be just as useless. No bedside manner, honestly doesn't care at all how you are feeling and why. Told me I shouldn't feel any withdrawal symptoms coming off of Prozac. What a joke! Do not see him. If you do you will honestly regret it. read more

unfortunately I noticed that Dr. Moyer was not very considered by handing my friend two new Bipolar and anti anxiety meds and sending her off after a 15 min. office visit. No follow up calls , nothing. My friend just got hospitalized today after overdosing......she took the meds and fell into a deeper depression. I agree with the other review, that unless you are very stable, this doctor is not for you. He does not follow up and care how you do on new meds. I am shocked and don't recommend Dr. Moyer for patients with severe mental problems. read more

In the more than six years I've known him, Dr. Moyer has constantly provided me with excellent care, has contributed thoughtful, expert advice, and has gone out of his way to help my work and academic life become more successful. I can tell he really cares about my well-being and I am comforted to know he's got my back. I would recommend him to anyone seeking a healthcare professional and I feel that my life has greatly improved with his help. He is highly organized, efficient, and experienced as well as being personable and courteous. Dr. Moyer is honest, dependable, hardworking, and reasonable and is the perfect choice if you need a doctor in the La Jolla/UCSD area. read more

I'm unsure what the other reviews are about, I guess you can't please everyone. In my experience, Dr. Moyer has been great, I like his bedside manner, I feel like I can talk to him as a friend, which makes it easier. His diagnostic was spot on and he put me on a better medication than the one I was previously taken. I've struggled with anxiety for several years and the few times I've had a crisis he's been able to treat me and make me feel better within a few days. Another thing I like is that he is usually able to squeeze you in within a few days when you need it the most, instead of a few weeks like many other doctors. From my perspective, he's also been super responsive, not only with me but with his other patients, I've personally seen him following up on urgent matters between appointments. I'd 100% recommend Dr. Moyer for anyone looking for psychiatric help. I'd also recommend anyone reading this to not get discouraged by the VERY FEW bad reviews here on Yelp, he's in ZocDoc (which is awesome because you can book apts online) and he maintains a 4.8 rating on over 150 reviews, those reviews are guaranteed to be from REAL patients, while Yelp's are not. read more

Beware of this so called Dr. psychiatry. He doesn't know the HIPPA laws or simply they don't apply to him. What he does that is not allowed by the law is he engages his patients in common areas of the hospital. He doesn't listen to his patients and carries a load of patients that I think means he is only in this specialty for the money. read more

Either Dr. Moyer doesn't know what he's doing, or he doesn't care. During my first visit with him he tossed out 2 possible diagnoses for what might be making me feel the way I was feeling. Near the end of the session he had me tell him which meds I was taking as he listed them on his laptop. He cut me off abruptly at the session's end, rather than giving me a 5 minute warning. He closed his laptop. I explained to him that he had not allowed me to finish giving him my medication list; there was one more medication that I was taking. When I told him the name of the medication, he said it could be problematic for me; that it was not something he thought I should be taking. However, he could neither be troubled to reopen his laptop nor even to make a written note. Instead he asked me to remind him that I was on that particular medication during my next visit. Making this note in my chart was the least he could have done. Ideally he should have noted my current dosage and written me a prescription for a lower dose so he could begin tapering me off of the medication. I found his attitude incredibly irresponsible and uncaring. My second visit was one month later, and it was even worse. I mentioned to him the 2 possible diagnoses he suggested for me during my initial visit. He gave me a look of surprise and confusion and literally responded with: "Really? I said that?" I would not put my health in his hands if I were you. read more

Dr. Moyer is great. I've worked in the medical field for 30 years and wish all the doctors I know were as kind and competent as he is. He asks the right questions and makes me feel at ease. I trust him and recommend him to anyone looking for a good psychiatrist. read more

Wow I did not look at Yelp before seeing Dr. Moyer and I am very glad I didn't because my experience was the opposite of what is described here. Dr. Moyer was really kind, had a great bedside manner and created an environment where it was really easy to talk honestly. He listened to everything I had to say, gave me a solution and made sure I knew how to reach him in case I needed help before our next appointment. I was even a couple minutes late to the appointment but he saw me anyway. I'll gladly update as I continue to see Dr. Moyer. I would recommend him to anyone, friends and family. I really can't understand some of the negative reviews here and would encourage those looking for a doctor to check out ZocDoc or meet him for yourself. read more

Where do I start? Each and every time I have ever been in need during the times that I need the support of a professional Dr. Moyer has always been there. After leaving military care for over a decade Dr. Moyer was like a breath of fresh air, caring and attentive he worked with me every time to find the solution together instead of just shoving words into my mouth and handing me a prescription. This gentleman actually cares about his patients and is very personable and deserves many more accolades for being such a professional and great at his job! read more

he is an awful doctor he doesn't even deserve to have that title. I told him how I witnessed a murder and had been in psych wards and how traumatizing it was for me and that I suffer from PTSD and night terrors every time I sleep. I told him I was on disability from everything I had endured that last four years of my life and he asked me "well what so you need my help for?" HELLO I JUST TOLD YOU WHAT I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING FROM and he absolutely did nothing to help me and told me that he didnt see a problem with me...well he obviously didnt listen and because of his 45 minute appt he reported me no longer disabled when I clearly was and still am and I was kicked off SSI because of him and his bullshit report. THANKS DOCTOR! I hate been able to get a job in 3 years since I've seen him and I haven't gotten any aid from SSI or the state because of that 45 minute visit my life has been a living hell. DO NOT SEE THIS DOCTOR HE WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE AND Not help you with any medication he is a prick. read more

I like dr. Moyer. It's very easy to make an appointment with him, and he's usually very punctual for the appointment, unlike most other docs that force you to wait an hour to see them. He's been understanding of my issues and I've had no issues with him. And I believe he takes most insurance. It would be nice if he added auto appointment reminders as I always call and check on the appointment time as I can't keep up with the cards. read more

I'm surprised to see any negative reviews on Dr. Moyer. I have always had such a great experience with him. His bedside manner has always been great, very professional yet friendly. I feel at ease when I talk to him. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the different medications and prescribed me a medication to help me with anxiety during speeches and such which didn't have the same addictive properties that benzodiazepines do. The medication absolutely worked, I couldn't believe it. I was so calm and confident and the speech went better then any speech I've ever given. He really cares about his patients and will choose the best medication for the condition with the least amount of drawbacks. Take a look at the Zocdoc reviews. They are from verified patients only and rate him very highly (which is well deserved). read more

Been seeing him almost monthly and he seems and acted very caring and concerned and listened to me tell him about my life and gave advice. Quickly yes but efficient. I called him when meds weren't working and I felt worse and he called back and changed them. I've had no problems with him. read more

I've seen dr. Moyer at the convoy office for close to 2 years now and thinks he's fantastic. He's flexible with my high demand work schedule and seems generally interested in my day to day when I'm there. Since I have been seeing him and with the proper meds, my work and home life have improved drastically. I highly recommend! Plus he's quirky and i normally leave his office chuckling, which is a bonus IMO. read more

Trenton Moyer is more interested in labeling you than looking at your symptoms or listening to you. He is easily annoyed as I had a hard time getting out of the office and was 5 mins late. The fact people where showing up as zocdoc screwed something up. He's one of these guys who strings you along to get every cent out of you or your insurance company. I actually feel worse about my self this morning than I have in over a year. Plus if your disable, you must ride the bus! Avoid@! read more

Dr. Moyer takes the cake for being the worst doctor I've ever sat in front of.. I am a united states Combat veteran and former cop. I've seen plenty of doctors for PTSD .HE BY FAR. Takes the cake as the worst. He was rude condescending arrogant and had a smirk on his face the whole time I was TRYING to explain to him some issues.....I was disgusted at his horrible demeanor. This is what United States Combat Veterans honorable men get thrown in front of. What a wimp! read more
