This draft has been in my queue for years! So, here goes…read more I came here years ago for a nearby artist residency and bought a beautiful 6-piece espresso set. I still use it! It's so elegant. Cece packaged each piece with such care that they made it all the way back to California safely. This store is a place where you could keep finding dreamy items. We stayed for a long time. Cece was so warm we got hugs on the way out! A welcoming and lovely space. Thank you. I still use the cups and saucers when I do morning espresso! They're still in stellar condition and I plan to keep them that way for years to come.

We saw customers enter as we browsed outside. After belatedly being informed by an outdoor staff member that they were closing in a few minutes, we approached the front door promising we would be quick. An unkind staff member, not dissimilar to the gate keeper of Oz, peaked out of the closed door and basically told us to go away. She went on to complain that it was "people like you" who don't understand they have places to be. I am not sure if this was a swipe at out-of-towners (I am not) but either way, while the concept of Turned Antiques is nice, it is not unique, and the potential unpleasant reception not worth the drive out.

Perhaps because HNP has vintage clothing in the back -- some fun hats from the 40s and 50s, and all nicely displayed. I was so tempted to buy one of the hats because it reminded me of one my grandma used to wear. In some shops, it can seem like the dust takes over and diminishes the fun in searching. That didn't seem to be the case here. I noticed plenty of tables and chairs and general knicknacks and all were in great shape and I didn't feel like I had dust and dirt clinging to my hands when I left. The owners were sharing a laugh about not "seeing" everything because they look at it every day; so, if someone asks for something specific they draw a blank. I get it and I'm not working in an antique store. Welcome to normal.

Dayton is one of those blink and you'll miss it type of small towns, so finding the Mercantile was not difficult. Wonderfully decorated inside and out, calling the place a mercantile fits perfectly. There are some antiques as soon as you enter, but the main attraction for us was on the right. The two young ladies who staffed the counter area were friendly and quite helpful. We got a couple of single ice creams for the dogs and they suggested placing them in cups; perfect! We also got slushies for ourselves; watching the slushy machine at work was mesmerizing. Definitely a worthwhile stop if you're in the area!
