If you want to cook up something new whether it is middle-eastern or Carribean cuisine, come here because staff are friendly and will kindly advise you.

Matta's is a well known Liverpool food stockist, I'm not sure it's really a deli, let's call it a food place because they sell things to do with food. Because we here in Liverpool know so little about food - our traditional meal is not scouse as people will have you believe but Pot Noodle - there are few places like Matta's and certainly none as reasonably priced. Herbs and spices, exotic condiments, preserves, oils and stocks are the main fare of Matta's trade helping scousers to liven up our spam frittas since a while ago and now they have entered the 21st century with an e-commerce website.

Delivery is free of charge within a five mile radius, or you can visit the shop. The 'shop' is a 'no-frills' affair, a double garage at the rear of the Patitucci family home. So you can rest assured that you are not paying through the nose for expensive premises - no, sir! Their produce is of four grades - Regular, Local, Organic and Paolo's. 'Paolo's' denotes produce grown in the greenhouses and market gardens to the rear of the garage - as far as I know, I would consider it a sort of 'uncertified organic' as my information is that Paolo does not use chemical pesticides, etc. Paolo is the grandfather of the family, who moved from southern Italy to Lancashire in 1955, and is as devoted a market gardener as you could hope to find. They also stock a nice selection of organic delicatessen items, plus homemade jams, etc. The business side of things is now run by Paolo's son Vince, who is another fantastic gentleman. From what I've seen of him, I would say Vince is a bit of a dude. Such as - when it was still glass milk bottles - carrying two crates of milk in each hand. Without braggadocio. Lastly, they are totally fair and honest, which is a boon when buying fresh produce.

I have never tasted apples like the ones this local independent and trust worthy shop has to offer, and there is always locally grown seasonal produce. Matthew always makes the effort to find fresh produce that has been grown within 50 miles of his shop and labels them for all his customers to see. An added bonus is if there is something particular you are after, all you have to do is ask and the next day you have the best quality of it! There is a free delivery service if you cant carry your 10lb of spuds and carrots etc home with you or if you cant get to the shop at all which is fab for the older generation. Also THE BEST place for Christmas trees! Always service with a smile :)

While most of us are trying to get a well earned lie in or nurse a hang over there are many out there setting up stalls to sell their wares and even more getting out there to sample the fresh produce of fruit, meat and cheese sellers and hand crafted materials and jewellery. When the weather is good or the 'farmers' know there will be more tourists out on the street there seems a better turn out and the market is the best way to sample some of the areas best local goods.

Maybe it's because my parents didn't force it down me enough as a child, or not often enough anyway. Whatever it is, I always struggle with eating it and I'm definitely not ever going to be one of those people that order a salad for lunch, either. Thankfully, local greengrocers like Branfresh in Ormskirk village almost make me change my mind and start eating my greens more often. The shop is full of various freshly grown and picked produce that even I must admit does look quite tasty, even if I'm reluctant to actually eat it. As it's a small local business, the service they offer there is personal and friendly, meaning the staff are chatty and happy to help if you can't find the cucumbers or oranges (although the shop is set out well enough for you to probably not need them anyway) and their prices are more than reasonable enough for you to consider choosing them over the local supermarkets.

The gigantic counter displays a myriad of delicious cheeses, hams, olives, pates, anti-pasti and salads whilst the nearby baskets display fresh sticks and loaves of bread. Nothing complicated - in the end, I ordered a Greek salad and a plate of Serrano ham rather than the pricier mains on the blackboards. I'm not sure how two really basic things could be so disappointing. I think it's because on the surface, this looks like a place that prides itself on sourcing and attention to detail. On the specials during my visit were such items as hand foraged local samphire, Cumbrian lamb and Pink's award winning sausages. So why was the Greek salad about 50% raw onion? Why did it feature those mealy crunchy supermarket basics tomatoes, cold from the fridge? Even the black olives mentioned on the menu were green. And they clearly did have black olives in the kitchen, because my four slices of Serrano ham (almost £6) came topped with a single olive. They boasted it was "20 month aged" - most of it had clearly been in their fridge, as it featured a faint tang of refrigerator and managed to be unpleasantly rubbery. Not sure how Serrano ham can even go rubbery but there you go. If you've boasting of excellent ingredients then it's unacceptable for the basics to fail so badly. I wouldn't bother returning.
