One of the coolest places we dined in Italy was Trattoria Popolare Matera. It's located in a cave in Matera's Sassi district, a historic area known for its ancient cave homes. The restaurant is built into limestone rock, giving it a unique, authentic character and feel. The lighting inside the cave/restaurant creates a relaxing atmosphere. I don't know much about the Basilicata region and its traditional dishes, but this place uses local ingredients to serve dishes from this region. Our group of six ordered various dishes, and everyone enjoyed their meals. Our server was fantastic. He handled our difficult table with great humor. We even chatted with him for a few minutes outside as we were leaving, and had a few good laughs and learned more about the area.
We had great food, wonderful service, and a fantastic time. read more
