On the night we arrived in Matera, we decided to have dinner in Osteria San Giovanni. They specialize in typical Lucanian cuisine from the Basilicata region of Italy. It was my brother who made the choice, and we were all impressed with the interior the moment we walked in! I opted for a pasta dish after we shared a few appetizers and chased them down with a tap beer. I was very happy with my choice. Others in our group of six were also very happy with their dishes. Our server was very good and took care of us all the way through our dinner. The restaurant also serves dishes with recipes going back to Matera's farming and shepherd history, with a modern twist, of course. I really wanted to try their Pignata, a slow-cooked, traditional lamb stew, but I was not hungry enough and decided to go with a lighter dish; maybe next time!
The interior is very interesting, like most restaurants in the area, because it is all in a cave carved into sandstone! I suggest making a reservation in advance, as it appears to be a popular destination for both locals and visitors. You will enjoy their dishes, which are made with fresh, local ingredients. You can tell the quality as you taste the food. Their pastas are handmade there, and the meat is local. They also offer a variety of vegetarian options for those who prefer them. I recommend Osteria San Giovanni if you are visiting Matera. read more
