Great staff. Best thing on the menu is the Imaginative starter from the chef which is a hearty portion. (Service for one pictured) The pork was a bit dry. The restaurant was overly perfumed when we arrived but started to fill with the fragrance of the food once cooking began and that was much better. read more

We started with Ravioli, Pasta with Genovese sauce and the cheese/salamis starter. Matera is definitely an up and coming town. We can see why the city recently received a ton of funding to increase tourism, so i imagine that SOUL KITCHEN will be a hot spot! My husband and I didn't have a reservation, but because we arrived at opening time-- they managed to find a spot for us. We are so glad we found this adorable restaurant. It had good ambiance, delicious food,and friendly staff. I ordered the roasted wheat orecchiette pasta with turnip greens and sun dried pepper oil, garlic, anchovies. The pasta dish was fresh and packed with flavor. The turnip greens tasted more like broccoli rabe, which I enjoyed. My husband really enjoyed the potato ravioli with tomato sauce. The beef tagliata and tbone steak were cooked as requested. We have never had beef tagliata and it was quite tasty. The t-bone steak was massive, flavorful, and seasoned well. The house wine was delicious too! The staff was professional and efficient. If we ever find ourselves back in Matera, we will definitely be back. read more

Trust the chef! The chef comes to your table and you place your order with him. Ask him what he recommends and go with it. The chef's choice antipasti of 6 dishes (3 freddo/cold and 3 caldo/hot) are amazing. We are vegetarians and told him, so he put together 6 non-meat dishes for us. The couple next to us ordered the same, but theirs had some meat dishes. The special of the day was an eggplant pasta which was phenomenal. We also tried the potato ravioli and a fava bean and chicory purée. This was one of the best meals of our trip! read more

Assorted appetites were great and interesting. I ordered the Steak Medallions with porcini sauce. The sauce was good but the steak itself wasn't tender and not sliced into medallions but two small steaks. Having grown up in beef country, a chewy piece in beef turns me off. I expect the meat to be tender and juicy. It was cooked okay with pink inside but the cur of beef was a lesser grade and it showed. read more

I would have given them 4 1/2 stars except for some reason we were invisible to the waitstaff. I think it was a fluke as everyone else seemed to be getting great service and there was a very strong culture of excellence in the restaurant in general. Other reviews talked about the chef taking the orders, but this is actually the brother who runs the dining room and wears a chef's hat. His brother runs the kitchen and is the chef but doesn't take orders. As others have noted the anti-pasta sampler is fantastic. My wife had the potato ravioli which was excellent, as was the chocolate pannacotta. We had the house red wine which was very nice. read more

If I could write a book about this place, I would. I might. The brothers that run it are a delight. They are an entertaining draw onto themselves. The wine, an Aglianico the older brother who works the dining room selected was maybe the best wine of our two week trip to Italy. The food was creative, and traditional at the same time. And "tasty" isn't a strong enough description. The younger brother works the kitchen. His brother calls him the brother "piccolo". I'm telling you, they are hilarious. Stay until the kitchen slows and Piccolo emerges to interact with the remaining diners and his brother. They are precious. Oh, and the place is as cool as it gets in the Sassi, too. I mean, you're in a cave. But it's somehow warm and inviting. As are these brothers. Just go. read more

I happened upon this restaurant while visiting Matera. The staff was extremely welcoming, with the chef appearing to take you order in person. I ordered the beef tagliata and the fried mushrooms with garlic, both of which were exquisite. The house red wine was also a very pleasant surprise. Nice place. Multi levels. We were seated on the highest level in the back in a dark corner. I had to ask to have candle to be lit in order to see the menu. Place was busy and the wait staff were pleasant. All spoke passable English. We skipped appetizer and ordered 2 pasta dishes and a beef medallion in wine sauce. Nothing medallion about it. It was a nice size steak cooked unevenly and more rare than medium that I ordered. The pastas were very good. Despite the restaurant name I liked the place. I would go back. We as desserts. My wife the strawberry cheesecake and myself the pistachio ice cream. Nothing overly sweet. We did order the house red wine which was ok not great. A little sweeter than I prefer. Can't praise highly enough. Fabulous food and wine. Complementary appetisers as 'a gift from the chef' were delicious. Tiramisu was an unusual consistency but fantastic. And the service was unbeatable. Each of the waiters was passionate about their food and wine and took hospitality very seriously. We at st 7.30 and were the only customers for a whole. We went to Soul Kitchen based on a referral from our local guide, who gave us several local favorites. We chose this intrigued by the name (a nod to Jim Morrison ). Matera is a surprising little city, feels cosmopolitan in a decidedly rural part of southern Italy. Soul Kitchen is down at the end of a big main pedestrian avenue, behind the Art Museum, so not in the middle of the crowds. We sat outside, beautiful weather, only a couple of tables out there--they were packed inside, we lucked out. Despite being busy, we had a very gracious and friendly waiter. I had the fava bean and chicory, loved it, and the local pasta as our meals, always house wine. It is a good solid meal, fresh food, locally sourced, well prepared and reasonably priced. Remember, in Italy, the wait staff won't approach your table often, nor do they rush you at the end of a meal, you can stay all night, no table turnover goal. So if they are not hovering over you, or coming to your table much, it's usually just their way of giving you space, it's cultural. If you want your check, or something else to eat or drink, you need to get your server's attention. If you're in a rush when you get there, let them know and remind them to bring your check as you get your meal or close to finishing it. In any case, we'll be back to Soul Kitchen next time in Matera! Buon appetito! read more
